Text: Hill, Petrucci, McCreary and Perry, "General Chemistry," 4th Edition, 2005.
Laboratory Manual: Beran, J.A. "Lab Manual for Principles of General Chemistry", 7th Edition, 2005 (Yellow Cover);
* Exams 1 and 2: Tuesdays, October 4 and November 1 2005, at 9:40–10:55am;
Final Exam: Wednesday, December 14, 2005, at 5:00–7:00pm.
GRADING: Laboratory: 20%; Quizzes: 30%; Exam 1: 15%; Exam 2: 15%; Final Exam: 20%.
ASSIGNED PROBLEMS: Students should work through the problems in order to test and master their comprehension of the
concepts and calculations required in each chapter.
QUIZZES and EXAMS: Quizzes and exams will be given during the discussion periods. There will be 5 quizzes, and the lowest
quiz grade will be dropped. No index cards are permitted for quizzes and exams. Quiz and exam coverage will be announced in
class. Review and discussion will be given by TAs every other week during discussion period. Quiz and exam keys will be
posted on bulletin board on the 5th floor outside the general chemistry office. It is important to check those keys for better
performance of other quizzes and exams.
There will be no makeup quizzes or exams. The grade for unexcused quiz or exam will be zero. The grade for excused quiz or
exam will be substituted accordingly. Any missed quiz or exam to be considered excused requires a written note. Students
need to see the instructor with a written note as soon as they return to class for any missed quiz or exam they want to be
excused.
GENERAL CHEMISTRY CALCULATOR POLICY: All students in general chemistry courses are required to have a scientific
calculator with exponential and logarithm capability. Only simple scientific calculators may be used. Programmable calculators
with significant memory, PDA (personal digital assistant) devices, such as Palm Pilots, laptop computers, cellular telephones,
and any other electronic devices that connect to the wireless network are prohibited during quizzes and examinations. Use of a
prohibited electronic device during a quiz or exam will be considered as a form or academic dishonesty.
ASSISTANCE: Your TA will have office hours and is available to help you. The instructor will also be available at office hour.
Use the chemistry tutorial center in Bu 513. This is free to all of the students, and is staffed by TAs from Monday to Friday.
DISABILITY SERVICES: If you need course adaptations or accommodations because of a documented disability or if you have
emergency information to share, please contact the Office of Disability Services (974-6087; Dunford 2227). This will ensure that you
are properly registered for services.
