WU: past tense vocabulary cloze 2. Watch vocabulary video for vocabulary from The Cat and the Mouse. 3. Students take notes on the vocabulary while practicing and reinforcing spelling, pronunciation, meaning, and parts of speech. 4. Remaining time students may complete their flashcards and practice the pronunciation for weekly oral quiz. Cards due tomorrow, quiz on Fri. Objectives: SWBAT identify recently new vocabulary in correct context SWBAT read with increasing fluency and comprehension SWBAT identify several facets of "fables" and find the same ideas in The Cat and the Mouse SWBAT orally summarize short portions of the story. Activities: 1. WU: vocab. cloze. 2. Preview with “Probable Passage” and then read The Cat And The Mouse. 3. Students orally summarize the story, using the past tense. 4. Oral summaries of the story. 5. Students read the story in pairs Objectives: SWBAT work collaboratively to put the events of a recently read story in the correct order SWBAT recall sequencing of a recently read story and use context to deduce where certain events belong SWBAT identify miscategorized words from recently learned vocab. Activities: 1. WU: What word doesn't belong? 2. Students get into groups or pairs and are given sentence strips from the story. The students must make a "chain of events" of the summary. The group that gets the sentences in the correct order the quickest wins a prize. 3. Repeat each event in the chain (choral). 4. Remind students they will be writing tomorrow. Objectives: Students will write short summaries of a recently read story Students will omit unnecessary information from written summaries Students will revise and edit their own written responses to lit. Activities: 1. WU: what happened in Shrek? 2. Model how to write good summaries. Use student activity as an example first, give examples orally. 3. Write an example summary of a popular movie. 4. Model example using previously read book Lady With the Alligator Purse, Chicken Soup With Rice. 5. Students begin working on their own summaries. They may do The Cat and the Mouse or choose a different story or movie. Objectives: Students' pronunciation and vocabulary recognition assessed on weekly oral quiz SWBAT independently complete a writing assignment that divides the topic into sections to later combine. Activities: 1. No WU, review pronunciation and meanings of vocabulary. 2. Students take the quiz individually. 3. Students who are not studying or who are finished will complete the writing assignment activity, or use Rosetta Stone software on laptops.
