Ask students what is a compound word?

Teacher will define a compound word and take several examples from students.
Teacher will explain that a list of compound words will be generated together using the SMART Board.
Model two examples of a compound word. For example, 1st word + 2nd word = new word (tree + house
= treehouse).

Complete list of eight compound words filling in the chart with examples from students.

turns creating compound words.

Each word may have more than one match. Students will click on a word, if it is correct they will get a
star and be told that they correctly made a compound word. If they choose incorrectly, they will be told
that the word is not a compound word and they can go back and try again.
Students will then get his or her Word Study folder and practice making connections using the list
generated from the previous day (if students did not make a list – the activity can still be completed.
Teacher can provide a list of five or more compound words).

Students will have three choices to make connections:
1. use the word in a sentence
2. define the word (using own words)
3. draw a picture of the word
5.
Teacher will check and grade the connections.
Assessment students will write and illustrate a sentence using a
compound word
Teacher will check and grade student connections through sentences, definitions, and drawings.
