"Survivors" by John Stewart has several states in the repeating refrain.
Lou and Peter Berryman's song "Your State's Name Here"
John Linnell of They Might Be Giants has an album called "State Songs" that might cover some of the needed ones
(such as Oregon).
John Forster's "Entering Marion" discusses a number of townships in Connecticut and Massachusetts in his
inimitable manner.
Not actually useful, but there is a punk compilation with 50 bands each doing their state song- or maybe what they
think is their state song. Somehow I can't hear Boris The Sprinkler on WNUR's folk show. At least all the songs are
two minutes or less.
Believe it or not long before Michael Feinstein got super Smaltzey he did a whole batch of show tunes on an early
Parnassus recording called LIVE @ THE ALGONQUIN theres a tune about rhode island is famous for you ( I think
) it's precious and tastefully short !
Dave Van Rock does a song in which he sings the names of all these cities in New Jersey
Dave Frishberg (?) has a wonderful song -- amusing -- about Rhode Island.
there's a Columbia reissue of material done in the 30s and 40s by the Hoosier Hot Shots (a sort of country version of
Spike Jones, though they predated Jones), one of their big hits was "Connie's Got Connections In Connecticut". A little
easier to find, though, is the title track to Emmylou Harris' album "The Ballad of Sally Rose", the chorus of which
contains the refrain "Adios, South Dakota, adios Sally Rose" (as a bonus, the song also mentions Minnesota).
For my home state of Delaware, I recommend Front Range's song "Delaware", written by the band's leader, Bob Amos
(a fellow Delawarean), from their album "The Road Home". That album is hard to find, though, so maybe you want
to dig up Loudon Wainwright's song that mentions Delaware, though I don't recall the title.
Mike West - In Mississippi - Home, and Mike West - New Mexico - Oddities and Rarities. See
www.mojono.com/mm I know Kris Delmhorst's new CD has a song called Dakota. Close enough? Scud Mountain
