War Literature
English 11/12
Over the past two weeks, we have covered a number of concepts:
1) The psychology of killing
2) Classical and Operant Conditioning (and how they relate to the military and us)
3) The notion of public support for a war
4) The role of the mass media in building or diminishing public support for war
With these concepts in mind, and feeling free to use any notes that you may have taken, respond to the
following prompt:
You are a President of Mabielandia. You have the country’s treasury at your disposal and can control the
military with a telephone call. You enjoy tremendous control over mass media sources. You are well
schooled in psychology.
You want war with your pesky, evil neighbor, Basnightville. We are not completely sure what your
motivations are. Perhaps it’s because the residents of Basnightville talk funny or wear strange ties. Maybe
the Basnightese are always talking smack about you. Maybe you just need a little more living space. It
doesn’t matter. You want to wage war successfully. So how do you do it?
Set up a strong argument (including a thesis and supporting points) that describes the best way to go to
war. In other words, what do you need to arrange, get in order, or put together before you can
successfully go to war?
