INTRODUCTION
Intent of the BI Resource Guide
Welcome to the first edition of the Utah Brain
Injury (BI) Resource Guide.
The BI Resource Guide is to help individuals with
brain injury, family members, and professionals gain
access to resources needed within their community.
Like any resource guide of community agencies,
it will need to be updated. More editions will follow with
update information that can be added to current listed
resources.
We do not endorse any of the services or make
any guarantees regarding the information or services
listed in this Resource Guide.

HOW TO USE THIS BOOK
Finding information
•Start with Table of Contents.
•Find the topic that you are interested in.
v
i
•Review topics to see if a resource can help you.
•You may want to attach a post-it tab so that you can find the page
later.
•Write down all of the information that you will need to make your
telephone call: agency name, telephone number, name of contact
person.
If you were unable to find a resource that will help, a good first
step would be to call the Brain Injury Association of Utah at (801)
484-2240 or (800) 281-8442.
Preparation for making a telephone call
When you are making a call be sure to prepare in advance all of the
information in front of you and have paper to write down the
information you receive.
Before you call, it is very important to know what you want. You
will be far more successful if you can make a specific request
rather than just asking for “help”.
Making the call
Introduce yourself and give a brief description of your situation.
Ask about the services they provide. The most important point is to
remember to “NOT GIVE UP” at the first sign of resistance.
Sometimes people either don’t understand your request or are not
sure how they can help you.
You may need to explain your request in several different ways.
Many of the agencies listed in this resource guide work with
various disabilities, not just those with brain injuries. You may
need to describe your issues and/or problems. Sometimes an
agency may not be able to help you, but the person you are talking
with can make other suggestions. You will also find that some of
the services are no longer offered, or the agency is no longer in
business.
Documenting the call
v
i
i
You will want to write down the following information:
•Who you talked with.
•Can they help?
•Are you supposed to call back, or what do you need for a followup?
•Did they give you other suggestions?

ALCOHOL AND CHEMICAL
People with BI have a very high incidence of alcoholism and
chemical dependence issues (this does not mean that all, or even
most, BI survivors have these issues). There are several reasons for
this. For many, the substance use may have contributed to their BI,
and they are at risk for subsequent injury if use continues.
For others, substances offer an “excuse” for behavior; one can
blame lack of attention or memory, slurred speech, altered
emotions, or unusual behaviors on the fact that he/she is ‘high’.
Also, some people with BI are in the age range where
experimentation with substances is common. And certainly for
many, drugs and alcohol offer a way out of the feeling of “losing
one’s mind”: for a while, one can forget the injury that has taken
over one’s life.
When choosing an agency or facility listed in this booklet, always
know that one type of program may work better than another for an
individual. Many people, for example, have gained much from the
12-Step model (Alcoholics Anonymous, Cocaine Anonymous,
etc.), while others benefit little from it. So be prepared if your
client/self/friend doesn’t benefit from the first facility or
organization he/she goes to. Substance dependence is treatable,
although not always quickly and easily.

CASE MANAGEMENT
Case Management has many definitions when used with people
who have experienced a brain injury. There are private case
managers that work individually with people with BI on their
specific issues;, for example, with memory management. There are
also hospital case managers who coordinate admissions and the
care within the hospital setting and work with the family and the
health care staff to prepare the clients for discharge. Case
managers work also in a few nonprofit agencies (e.g., Independent
Living Centers) work to coordinate access to the services within
the agency.
It could become important to choose a case manager who knows
BI and is comfortable working with the issues that can surround
BI. Unless the case manager was chosen for you, family member,
or client by the insurance company, the consumer has the right to
give input in the process. An effective case manager can make a
difference in outcome: getting the right services at the right time
can help considerably with recovery.

DAY PROGRAMS
4.
You will find listings of various programs to access for people
with BI who are not yet ready to return to work or school.
Day programs are defined as non-residential programs that teach
those with BI the skills they need, and help with memory and
attention strategies. Some individuals with BI may be resistant to
the notion of a “day program ” they may feel that this demeaning
to them or sometimes there is an unawareness of the consequences
of their BI. This resistance can be addressed by bringing up the
fact that this is only a temporary situation, and when the person
proves that he/she is able to do more than attend such a program,
more options will be offered.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
The potential for domestic violence in the family of an individual
with BI is real and it can happen to your family. One reason for
this is the intense frustration of having one’s personality changed
by the BI and not understanding how or why these changes are
happening. A second is the fact that the person with BI is no
longer the same as he/she was before the injury. Family, including
parents, spouses, children, and other relatives, are facing a
different person. Parents discover that their child, as they
perceived him/her, has changed; spouses find that their loved one
appear to be gone and someone else is in their place; and others in
the family are often confused that, even though their injured
relative looks the same to them. Those closer to him/her in the
family are grieving a terrible loss. Thirdly, the BI can alter the
family structure. If the person with BI was the breadwinner or the
main emotional supporter in the family, the BI can change these
family roles and thus change the family. The differences the family
sees in the person with the BI make for a different family structure
and organization. The fourth reason involves the more common
personality alterations that can happen after a brain injury.
Emotional lability (mood swings) can involve frustration that
erupts into family violence.
x
v
To help with these problems, we have included a list of facilities
and organizations that deal with domestic violence. For assistance
from a victim advocate, contact your local police agency.

DRIVING EVALUATION AND
EDUCATION
Driving is a very important skill in our society. People with BI
sometimes have their licenses taken away: this may be due to
seizure activity, physical or cognitive limitations, or as a legal
consequence of the accident that gave them the BI.
Many with BI can and do drive safely and well. If you (person with
BI, family, friend, or professional) are not sure about driving skills,
a driving evaluation can document whether one is able to drive
safely.
Adaptive Driving Education Resources will help those people with
BI who are trying to get their driving privileges reinstated as well
as those that want to have their driving skills assessed. The
agencies listed below offer driving education for people with
disabilities to help them learn or relearn driving skills.

EDUCATION (Schools Sp. Ed./
Charter Schools)
Children with brain injuries present unique challenges for parents
and special educators. It is very important for parents and schools
to work together with medical professionals as students transition
back into school after having a brain injury. This will enable
planning to have necessary supports in place in school in time to
help the student make a successful transition. Parents can assist the
school with preparations by sharing evaluation and treatment
information from the student's doctors and therapists with the
school district special education administrators and the school
principal. This is especially important in cases where school staff
need training to meet the child's needs before he/she returns to
school.

Finances remain a very difficult area for those with BI. Sometimes
the family is already in a financial crisis when the BI strikes.
Sometimes the BI itself puts them in financial straits (by loss of an
income or the burden of medical bills). Regardless the situation,
the individual and their family’s need whatever assistance can be
found.
This section includes agencies that help people with credit
counseling, as well as those that offer counseling with various
financial difficulties that are often encountered following serious
injury.

FACILITIES
Housing remains one of the most vexing and difficult challenges
for those with BI. Housing is difficult and expensive for anyone to
find, and when one adds the complications of having special needs
and low income, finding affordable and accessible housing
becomes an even more challenging task. The agencies and
organizations listed below can help.
Residential care facilities help people who need some supervision
in their daily lives. As with any other for-profit business, it’s
important to investigate carefully before committing to any
facility.

RECREATION AND LEISURE
RESOURCES
This chapter lists services and organizations that offer recreational
opportunities for people with BI. These services can be very
important for a number of reasons:
1) recreation offers training in skills that are important in many
areas of living (e.g., cooperation, teamwork, etc.) that the person
with BI may have ‘misplaced’ due to the injury; and
2) recreation offers a way to learn to socialize with others, a skill
that is also sometimes misplaced. It is important to find the right
recreation/leisure outlet for you/family member or your client.
There are many factors involved in the ‘right’ program: the
l
x
i
i
person’s interests, abilities, and skills; the people who are in the
program (do they have BI? [although they don’t necessarily have
to have a BI for the program to be beneficial], are they at a similar
level?); the staff (have they the patience to deal with possible
disruption, dissatisfaction, or lethargy?); and most importantly,
does the person like it. One additional place to investigate is the
local Parks and Recreation Department. When you consider that
these programs are local, they look very attractive and may be at
the top of the list to explore.

SUPPORT GROUPS
16.
Most support groups are consumer oriented and provide peer
support and educational material relevant to brain injury. Support
groups can be wonderful experiences for people with BI and for
family and friends: try them out.
Some Support Groups are constantly changing and new groups are
forming, a good way to find news of a group is to call the Brain
Injury Association of Utah at (801) 484-2240 or (800) 281-8442.
It has been our experience in referring people to these groups that
some may have irregular schedules; it’s best to call the contact

person(s) first to check the schedule, to determine if this is the best
group for yourself, family member, friend or client, and to

TRANSPORTATION RESOURCES
Transportation services can be difficult to access, yet so important
for many people with BI. There are many problems with paratransit access. Some cities don’t have adequate services for
wheelchairs, especially during nonstandard hours (evenings or
weekends); others have trip limits (number of trips/month or
destinations); others will only transport to and from medical
appointments; others require advance notice.

With all these restrictions, it can be difficult for individuals to

VETERANS RESOURCES
Mild brain injury and concussion is the most common combatrelated injury. Better body armor and the use of Kevlar helmets do
protect troops and they have saved the lives of many men and
women in areas of conflict like Afghanistan and Iraq, as has
improved medical care. But helmets and body armor cannot protect

the frontal area of the head, the face and the exposed area of the
spinal cord. The result is that more and more soldiers are
surviving, but some are left suffering the long-term effects of
severe brain damage.

This resource topic can assist the person with BI to either: learn
skills for a career, help with the job seeking process, and/or get
placed in a position (vocational); or learn or re-learn about work
attitudes, habits, and the social skills necessary for work success
(prevocational).
People with BI often believe that going back to work is ‘the
marker’ of their recovery and the sooner they can get back to work,
the sooner they can ‘prove’ to themselves as well as to others that
they are ‘completely recovered’.
One strategy that can be helpful is to speak of it as a ‘trial’
experience: that "when you prove that you can do this, then we can
look into jobs that are more to your liking." This statement is true
because as the client’s attention, memory, and ability to
concentrate improve, he/she will be ready for more challenging
work.
