Students are responsible for all class work and assignments. In a day class, on the third absence, the instructor will send a probation letter to the student. In a night class, after one absence, a probation letter will be sent. This probation notice indicates that the student has been absent the number of times allowed by the instructor and is in danger of not passing the course. When students receive this probation notice, it is their responsibility to discuss their progress with the instructor. “On recommendation of the instructor concerned, students may at any time be dropped from courses for failure to meet the attendance requirements or other good cause. This may result in a “W” or an “F” on the student’s permanent record.” If a student leaves class without permission before class is dismissed, the student will be counted absent from the entire class. Please schedule doctor appointments for you and your family members at times other than class. IF YOU ARE ABSENT: It is YOUR responsibility to find out what YOU have missed if you are absent from class. YOU must complete any make-up work or assignments on the same schedule as the rest of the class. Being absent DOES NOT excuse you from tests or tasks on the day you return. Students who still continue to miss class will be subject to DISENROLLMENT. Please make doctor appointments for you and your family members at times other than class. INCOMPLETE GRADES: A grade of “I” may be given in accordance to university policy. THE OFFICIAL RECORD DATE (ORD): ORD is xxxxxxxx. ORD is the last day that you may drop a course without negatively impacting your academic standing. The newly-revised Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) policy requires that all students complete 70% of their coursework while maintaining a 2.0 GPA. If you drop a course on or before xxxxxxxxx, the dropped course is not included in calculating your 70% completion rate; thus will not negatively impact your academic standing. If you are a first-time freshman, a new state law prohibits institutions from allowing a student to drop more than six courses throughout his/her academic career. However, this only applies to courses dropped after the ORD. What does all this mean to you? If you do not plan to continue in a course in which you are enrolled, please drop the course on or before xxxxxxxxx. Dropping courses could also affect your financial aid. If you received financial aid this semester, please contact the financial aid office before reducing your course load. 4|Page SATISFACTORY ACADEMIC PROGRESS (SAP) The following REVISED policy applies to new and returning UTB/TSC students registered for classes in the 2007-2008 academic year. UTB/TSC monitors academic progress every fall and spring semester to identify those students who are experiencing difficulty with their courses. Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) is based upon two components: GPA of 2.0 or higher and successful course completion of at least 70% of course work attempted. Students remain in good standing with the university and Financial Aid when both criteria are met. Students who do not maintain these required minimum standards will be placed on probation or suspension as appropriate. The complete Satisfactory Academic Progress policy and the Undergraduate Satisfactory Academic Progress for Financial Aid policy can be found in the current Undergraduate Catalog. For more information, please visit MyUTBTSC Blackboard http://myutbtsc.blackboard.com; click on the Satisfactory Academic Progress link. EMERGENCIES: Special circumstances such as hospitalization or other emergencies should be discussed with me prior to an exam date or assignment due date. Remember that only YOU can determine how much you learn in this course. QUALITY OF WORK: While a grade of “D” is considered passing in a subject, an overall average of 2.0 is required for graduation. A grade of “C” or better may be required in other courses, departments or degree programs. For example, for Business English, students must pass with a “C” in order to be able to proceed to take Business Correspondence and Communications. CLASS PARTICIPATION: A student should be prepared to participate in class discussions and answer instructor questions concerning text material or other related topics, orally with well-organized thoughts and ideas. Participation (may/may not) be part of the student’s overall grade and will be measured, in part or in whole, by the student’s participation in class and hands-on activities conducted in class. Expect to be called on by the instructor in addition to volunteering to answer questions. CELL PHONES: Cell phones should be turned off or placed in vibrate mode during class. The ringing of cell phones interferes with instruction and concentration of other students. In order to preserve a positive learning environment, students are not permitted to leave the classroom to answer or return a cell phone call. If you anticipate an emergency might arise, please discuss it with your instructor prior to class. CLASSROOMS: Children are not allowed in the classroom due to safety and liability concerns. If you do not have someone to care for your children, please do not bring them to class with you. No food or drinks are allowed in the computer classrooms at anytime. The only exception to this rule is water in bottles with screw tops. EMAIL: All UTB/TSC students are required to have a UTB email account and password. To obtain your UTB email account, you should personally go to the computer lab on the second floor of the library (Information Resources) and apply for an account. You may obtain a UTB/TSC e-mail account at no additional charge. You will need to complete the application form, show your statement of charges and present a student ID card. This account will be valid as long as you are a continuing student at the University. 5|Page Please use your UTB email account when corresponding with me; be sure to type your name at the end of the email message. To send an email using your UTB email account, go to http: www.utb.edu and click on webmail then key your username and password. If you can’t remember your username and password, please call Information Resources help desk at (956) 882-7458 or (956) 882-7452. Please begin all e-mails to me with “COURSE No xxxxx” in the subject line. CLASSROOM PRINTING: Work should not be printed until it is assured that it is a final document. Students should, therefore, carefully proofread and make corrections before printing. No internet printing is allowed in the classrooms unless specifically required by a course. AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT (ADA): The ADA prohibits discrimination in all employment practices, including job application procedures, hiring, firing, advancement, compensation, training, and other terms, conditions, and privileges of employment. Students with disabilities play an active and vital role in campus life. The disability services counselor works with each student individually to arrange for accommodations, volunteer note takers, assistive technology training, sign language interpreting, recorded texts, and referrals to camps and community resources. The assistive lab is available for student use and is equipped with special computers and software to address the student’s needs. A testing service is available for students requiring testing accommodations. All services are elective and must be requested by the students. To request services, students must register with the Counselor/Coordinator of Disability Services. It is advisable to make this contact well before or immediately after the semester begins. For more information, go to http://www.ability.utb.edu. It is important that all students who require accommodations speak privately with the instructor so that all parties will understand their responsibilities for class assignments, homework assignments, and exams. The accommodations form must be signed by the instructor and should not occur during class. SCHOLASTIC DISHONESTY: Students who engage in scholastic dishonesty are subject to disciplinary penalties, including the possibility of failure in the course and expulsion from the University. AScholastic dishonesty includes but is not limited to cheating, plagiarism, collusion, submission for credit of any work or materials that are attributable in whole or in part to another person, taking an examination for another person, any act designed to give unfair advantage to a student, or the attempt to commit such acts.@ Since scholastic dishonesty harms the individual, all students and the integrity of the University, policies on scholastic dishonesty will be strictly enforced. (Board of Regents Rules and Regulations) Scholastic dishonesty (cheating) includes but is not limited to the following examples: loaning your work to someone loaning your diskette to someone printing someone else=s work and submitting it as your own copying someone else=s work on tests or assignments sending someone else=s work through email taking timings for someone else 6|Page having someone do your work giving answers or helping someone cheat looking at someone else=s paper or computer monitor during a test Consequences could result in any one or more of the following: Zero (0) on assignment for all parties involved Withholding of grades, official transcript, or degree Suspension of rights and privileges, including participation in athletic or extracurricular activities Suspension from the institution for a period of time not to exceed one calendar year Possibility of expulsion from University Referral to the Dean of Students for disciplinary action. All scholastic dishonesty incidents will be reported to the Dean of Students. Do not allow your peers to pressure you to cheat. Your grade, academic standing and personal reputation are at stake. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY Students are expected to be above reproach in all scholastic activities. Students who engage in scholastic dishonesty are subject to disciplinary penalties, including the possibility of failure in the course and expulsion from the University. Scholastic dishonesty includes but is not limited to cheating, plagiarism, collusion, submission for credit of any work or materials that are attributable in whole or in part to another person, taking an examination for another person, any act designed to give unfair advantage to a student, or the attempt to commit such acts. Since scholastic dishonesty harms the individual, all students and the integrity of the University, policies on scholastic dishonesty will be strictly enforced. (Board of Regents Rules and Regulations) All scholastic dishonesty incidents will be reported to the Dean of Students. Do not allow your peers to pressure you to cheat. Your grade, academic standing and personal reputation are at stake. CIVILITY: Students are expected to be cognizant of what a constructive educational experience is and respectful of other participating in a learning environment. Failure to do so can result in disciplinary action up to and including expulsion. Courtesy to fellow students and the instructor shall be expected. Examples of troublesome behavior in the classroom are: Interruptions caused by pages, mobile phones and other electronic devices; challenges to faculty authority; demanding special treatment; dominating discussions; excessive tardiness; “I paid for this” mentality; making offensive, disrespectful or aggressive remarks or gestures; missing deadlines; overt inattentiveness; prolonged chattering; reading newspapers or other non-class materials during class time; sleeping; talking out of turn; unexcused exiting or prematurely preparing to exit class. EMERGENCY POLICY STATEMENT: In compliance with the Emergency UTB/TSC Academic Continuity Program, academic courses, partially or entirely, will be made available on the MyUTBTSC Blackboard 7|Page course management system. This allows faculty members and students to continue their teaching and learning via MyUTBTSC Blackboard http://myutbtsc.blackboard.com, in case the university shuts down as a result of a hurricane or any other natural disaster. The university will use MyUTBTSC Blackboard to post announcements notifying faculty members and students of their responsibilities as a hurricane approaches our region. If the university is forced to shut down, faculty will notify their students. To receive credit for a course, it is the student’s responsibility to complete all the requirements for that course. Failure to access course materials once reasonably possible can result in a reduction of your overall grade in the class. To facilitate the completion of class, most or all of the communication between students and the institution, the instructor, and fellow classmates will take place using the features in your MyUTBTSC Blackboard and UTB email system. Therefore, all students must use Scorpion Online to provide a current email address. Students may update their email address by following the link titled “Validate your e-Mail Account” in MyUTBTSC Blackboard Portal. In the event of a disaster, that disrupts normal operations, all students and faculty must make every effort to access an internet-enabled computer as often as possible to continue the learning process. --end— The class calendar will be separate from the syllabus. 8|Page
