First Year Experience (FYE) Learning Communities
“Fast Lane to Success”
Curriculum Development Application
PART I
DUE DATE:
Why fill out this form?
Thank you for participating in the First Year Experience learning community
program! The Title III Department of Education grant is supporting new
development of learning communities at Lane, designed to help students learn
deeply and succeed in school. This application/report is part of our accounting
process to the Department of Ed. It also allows us to track development of First
Year Experience learning communities, see where our strengths and gaps lie,
and meet demand for workshops and other informational forums.
There are two parts to this process .
Part 1:
The first is very brief. Please fill it out as soon as possible. (Applications are
approved on a first-come, first-served basis, according to our needs, so contact
Anne McGrail for more information on the deadline this term.) . Claim your hours
on your time sheet no later than the second week following the term you teach in
this learning community .
Part 2:
Part 2 is a report on your curriculum development. Anne McGrail will send you
PART 2 at the beginning of the term that you teach the FYE learning community.
On this form, describe what curriculum development activities you did during your
teaching term to develop your learning community class. PART 2 is due by the
second week of classes in the term after you teach your learning community
class.


Other activities (briefly describe)
6. Meet with the Learning Communities Leadership Team
While it is not required for participation in an ongoing Fast Lane or Math Lane
learning community, the LCLT invites and encourages faculty new to learning
communities to plan to attend a team meeting to discuss your plans and help
answer your questions. We meet the first and third Wednesdays of the month
during the regular academic year at 4 p.m. Please arrange for a meeting by email
Anne McGrail mcgraila@lanecc.edu.
7. Anticipated Constraints: What kinds of limitations, constraints or special
circumstances should the LCLT be aware of in considering the viability of this
learning community? For example, whether one or more LC courses requires
prerequisites or placement tests; or whether there are enrollment discrepancies

between the courses etc. How will you address these constraints? (If you don't
know, the LCLT is a great resource for troubleshooting issues such as these;
please bring your ideas to the LCLT.)
8. Commitment to teach this class.
We are delighted that you are developing this learning community class, and
hope that you will be teaching it for years to come. Because our funding is
limited, we do request that the faculty member who requests CD support also
commits to teaching this class three times, as long as your dean agrees to assign
you to this class.
Division Approval of Your Learning Community
Because learning communities involve special registration and coordination
between your department and others on campus, it’s important that there is clear
communication between faculty, division deans, administrative coordinators, and
the Learning Communities Coordinator (Anne McGrail). To help maintain this
communication, please communicate with your Division Dean and
Administrative Coordinator about your planned participation in this learning
community. Ask your dean to read and sign the form below and send it to Anne
McGrail in LLC by xxxxx due date.
Please ask your dean to read below. S/he should sign this form indicating that
s/he is aware of the linked nature of this learning community class that you are
teaching and that s/he supports its offering in your department. S/he has
discussed enrollment and/or placement score restrictions with you.
Note to the Dean:
While Learning Communities are coordinated through the LC Leadership Team
and the First Year Experience (FYE) PlanningTeam the courses themselves are
taught through your sponsoring department. It is very important that your
department understand that while Learning Communities and FYE support initial
incubation and curriculum development for courses, the courses will be
mainstreamed as soon as possible after first being offered. This means that
your department process for course approval and faculty assignment
should be taken into account at the design stage of the learning

community.
Before you sign this form, please be sure to take into consideration the
following:
• departmental policies about enrollments and staffing
• workload issues
• increased or reduced class size
Please read and sign:
I have fully discussed this learning community with the faculty member(s) and I
