Turnitin is the only complete, web-based solution for managing writing assignments that prevents
plagiarism, delivers multiple phases of feedback and revisions, and engages students in the process. Its
three interrelated components—OriginalityCheck, GradeMark and PeerMark—greatly accelerate the
delivery of rich feedback on student work, engage students in their own learning and development, free
instructors from the burden of tracking paper copies of assignments, and promote critical thinking while
maintaining academic integrity.
If you are seeking funding for the purchase of Turnitin to supplement your academic program, this
document can help. It provides key information on Turnitin – in a plug-in format – for use in your grant
application. Note that some funding applications may not require all the information provided in this
document, and other applications may require additional information not provided here. It’s very important
for you to follow the funder’s specific application directions.

Section 1.0 Product Overview
1.1 Description of Product
Used by more than half a million high school, college and university instructors, Turnitin is a complete, webbased solution that simplifies and improves the process of creating, managing and commenting on written
assignments. Turnitin reinforces proven best practices in process-based writing while increasing instructor
effectiveness and productivity. Turnitin components include OriginalityCheck™ Plagiarism Prevention,
PeerMark® Peer Reviewing tools and GradeMark® Paperless Grading and Mark-up tools, described in
more detail below.
OriginalityCheck™ Plagiarism Prevention
Turnitin OriginalityCheck is the world’s leading solution for finding unoriginal content and diagnosing
potential plagiarism. It allows educators to check students' work for improper citation or potential plagiarism
by comparing the work against continuously updated databases of existing sources. Instructors or students
submit their papers to Turnitin via a web-based account. Turnitin then generates an Originality Report for
each paper submitted, analyzing students’ compliance with their instructor’s instructions and/or school
policies regarding plagiarism, proper citation and use of copyrighted materials.
Turnitin dramatically speeds up the process of assessing documents for originality and addressing any
issues with students. Every Originality Report provides instructors with the opportunity to teach their
students about proper citation methods and safeguard students’ academic integrity.
In analyzing student work for unoriginal content, Turnitin draws on the industry’s most comprehensive
database of original source materials, including billions of pages of web content, more than 150 million
previously submitted student papers, tens of millions of articles from over 80,000 subscription-based
journals, and thousands of textbooks.
PeerMark® Peer Reviewing
Turnitin’s patented PeerMark tool enables instructors to quickly create and manage peer review
assignments in which students read and comment on each other’s work. Peer review is a popular teaching
practice, with a strong body of evidence showing that it can improve student writing, editing and critical
thinking. Although peer reviewing is a powerful educational method, it can be logistically difficult —
especially in larger classes. PeerMark eliminates the challenges and complexities of distributing and
managing paper-based assignments. Using a simple web-based interface, instructors can set up and
manage assignments, provide structured guidance and monitor the results with minimal effort. Students can
easily upload, review and comment on each other’s papers, prompted by instructor-supplied questions and
guidelines.
Features include automatic paper distribution, optional anonymous reviews, a palette of reviewing marks
and tools, and assessment metrics.
GradeMark® Paperless Mark-up and Grading
Completely web-based, this online digital markup tool provides instructors an efficient and 100% paperless
way to mark and grade student work. Instructors have the option of turning on the ETS® e-rater® writing
analysis tool to automatically check for spelling, grammar, usage, mechanics and style. E-rater technology
is designed to save instructors from the repetitive, time-consuming marking of surface-level errors and is
particularly helpful for non-English department instructors. In addition to the e-rater comments, instructors
can insert, edit and reuse GradeMark comments of any length. In addition to creating comments on the fly,
instructors can use a library of preconfigured editing marks or create their own. Used as a detailed
assessment tool, GradeMark tracks and graphically illustrates specific errors within an assignment for an

entire class of students. Instructors can use the tracking features to illustrate student progress for
accountability purposes to the school, district, or federal program administrators.
Features and capabilities include real-time grading and mark-up, standard editing marks, grade tracking
with GradeBook, fully customizable rubrics, and sharing of rubrics and editing marks.

Section 4.0 Product Research and Effectiveness / Testimonials
7 of 12
4.1 Research
In recent years, studies by independent researchers and by the company have found that Turnitin can
significantly reduce student plagiarism, improve written work, and enhance instructor productivity in high
school and college environments. The company has collected multiple years of data and analyzed the
effectiveness if its tools in real-world settings. Among the results:



A statistical analysis of 7 years of data from high school and college submissions to Turnitin found
that after two years of Turnitin use, serious instances of unoriginal content and plagiarism in student
writing decreased by 20 percent or more. After four years, institutions experience improvements of
35 - 70 percent.
Independent research studies show that Turnitin is substantially more effective than manual
plagiarism detection methods.
A recent survey of educators showed that Turnitin not only reduced plagiarism, but also helped
improve writing skills, reduced instructor workloads and increased productivity.
For more findings on the impact and effectiveness of Turnitin, please visit the Turnitin website, where
Turnitin has assembled a repository of articles, white papers, user testimonials and standards information:

4.2 Scenarios/Reference Testimonies
Instructors and institutions have provided multiple testimonials to the effectiveness of Turnitin. A few
examples:
OriginalityCheck: "I have used Turnitin.com's scan for plagiarized material for several
years now, and it has completely changed the intellectual authenticity, honesty, and
precision in my students' research writing. They can't wait to see the side-by-side analysis
of their papers and the articles they have quoted, all color-coded and numbered for
matches. Instructors who do not have access to this program often come to me, asking me
to run a scan on a paper they believe to be plagiarized. A school-wide subscription to
Turnitin.com would raise the level of our students' work several levels." - Dr. Dorothy
Bushnell, Merced College.
PeerMark: "Turnitin.com allows me to deliver the considerable cognitive benefits of the
peer review experience to my introductory class of 1000 students. Only this brilliant tool
allows me to do so without being swamped by administrative overhead."
- Prof. John Mitterer, Brock University (Recipient of the 2003 Brock Distinguished
Teaching Award).
GradeMark: "I have been using Turnitin.com for some time now, but with GradeMark’s
recent improvements correcting and giving feedback is a snap. I especially like
GradeMark’s clipboard and rubric generator. It is easy to reduce your grading time by up to
30% compared to pen and paper. The clipboard and rubric generator alone can improve
grading efficiency dramatically. I am also impressed with the emoticons available for
feedback. My students really seemed to enjoy the positive reinforcement that the
checkmark and smiley-face emoticons provide. Finally, having a summary panel that lists
the time spent grading and the number of total marks is an effective way for teachers to
stay on track. GradeMark almost makes me look forward to marking!" - James Papple,
Brock University.
A report for Virginia’s Broad Run High School expounded…
Helpful Information for Grant Writers
(0606.11)
8 of 12
“Not only is plagiarism down, but academic standards are higher than ever. Broad Run
receives regular report cards from Virginia universities on the quality of the students they’re
graduating, and their marks have gone up dramatically. I had an admissions officer tell me
that if he has a kid from Broad Run and a kid from another school, and their test scores and
GPAs are the same, he’ll admit our kid first because he knows our kids come prepared.” Dan Kent, Social Studies teacher and department chair at Broad Run.
On the other side of the country, a 26-year veteran English, Social Studies, and Humanities
teacher affirms…
“It became clear that using a service like Turnitin was not about playing gotcha. It was
about upholding academic honesty, rewarding those who do their own work, and
encouraging young writers to find their own voices.” – Bruce Becker, Lake Washington
School District, Redmond, Washington.
Section 5.0 Turnitin Corporate Information
5.1 Corporate Information
iParadigms, the company that created Turnitin, got its start in 1996, when a group of researchers at UC
Berkeley created a series of computer programs to monitor the recycling of research papers in their large
undergraduate classes. Encouraged by a high level of interest from their peers, the researchers teamed
with a group of instructors, mathematicians, and computer scientists to form Plagiarism.org, the world's first
internet-based plagiarism detection service.
By late 1998, Plagiarism.org had become the center of international media attention. The small organization
was featured in several major media venues, including Good Morning America, World News Tonight, and
the New York Times. Since then, Plagiarism.org has continued to grow and evolve and is now recognized
around the world as Turnitin.
With the addition of GradeMark and PeerMark to the Originality Check service, Turnitin reaches beyond just
plagiarism prevention to address the entire writing cycle for student papers and increase student
engagement and learning through the writing process.
