Fungi Microviewer Name:_____________________ ☺_______/10 Mould on Grape Look at slide #1. You should see the darker coloured mould growing on the surface of the grape below. How deep does the mould seem to penetrate the grape? Decide on a number of layers. (1) Bread Mould Look at slide #2. The white/pink layer at the bottom is the bread, the red dots are the mould (above the mould is a darker colour). When bread goes moldy where does the mould come from? (1) Mushroom Spore Print Look at slide #3. This was made by placing the cap of the mushroom on a piece of paper for 2 days. The mushroom will dry out and the spores fall out. What do the spores do? (1) How can the spores be distributed? (1) Orange Mould Look at slide #4. The section M is the mould growing on the surface of the orange, seen below. Where does the mould get its nutrients from? (1) Yeast Look at slide #5. Each egg shaped object is a yeast, (they are single celled organisms). You should see several yeast that seem to be attached by a small tube. That is because they are just finishing mitosis (cell division) and they will soon break apart. Yeast reproduces very rapidly. What do humans use yeast for? (Not sure? Read this section of the card) (2) Wheat Rust Look at slide #6. Wheat rust is a fungi that grows on wheat. Look back at slide #1 and compare it to this slide. What similarities are there between wheat rust and grape mould? (1) Bacteria You can look at slide #7 if you are curious. These are bacteria, not fungi. Decay Mould Look at slide #8 carefully and you will see the white shape of a fish head. The fish has a mould growing out of it that looks like long strings. Where is the mould getting its nutrients?(1) We consider these types of moulds necessary for the environment to function correctly. Why? (1) Fungi Worksheet Use your text book (p.136-140) and the lecture notes to answer the following Name: ______________________☺___/9 1. True or False? (3) _____ Fungi use photosynthesis to make their own food. _____ Fungi often have many nuclei per cell. _____ Fungi reproduce asexually by seed formation. _____ Spores produced have half the chromosomes _____ Fungi have true roots _____ Lichen are composed of two organisms; a fungi and a plant 2. List 3 conditions necessary for bread mould to form (this is based on your personal experience). (3) 3. Fungi can be both harmful and helpful to living things. Complete the table, including several points in each column. (3) Positive Contribution of Fungi Dangers of Fungi
