Newsletter No 41
Since the last newsletter not much has happened in the world of GSM, so this will serve mainly
as an update as to where we presently stand regarding the Jubilee and all arrangements. We
shall be holding our annual AGM on Sunday, 19th August, at 11.00am., at Triggerfish
Restaurant, Paardevlei, The Strand, and I am sure an update will follow after that meeting to
inform you of final arrangements.
Very importantly we wish to thank the motoring publications and motoring journalists for the
support GSM and the Club has enjoyed from not only current people, but also people that were
there over the past fifty five years!
A Huge article of 7 pages was published in the Classic & Performance Car Magazine in June/
July about Darts and Flamingo’s. Thanks Mike, Wayne and Fred.
The Car Magazine 4 page article which will be published in their September issue. Thanks
Chanelle and Hannes.
There is a huge possibility that Deon Schoeman of RPM program on DSTV will be covering the
Flamingo Jubilee on the Sunday. They are trying to fit us in with other events happing in Cape
Town the same time.
Wayne, curator of the Franschhoek Motor Museum has written an article which will be
published in the Franschhoek Tatler.
The Jubilee steering committee had a meeting on 8th August at Potbelly and I think we can
safely say that everything is on track, and good progress is taking place.
At this stage we have 19 Flamingos, 23 Darts, and around 100 people who have indicated that
they would be attending. Most owners have completed entry forms, and indicated the number
of guests, but we are waiting for final figures. At the AGM we shall be able to stress the
importance of accurate information, because we need to finalize arrangements with caterer’s
and suppliers of goods to be hired.
Our program for the Jubilee at present is;
Friday 21st September 2012.
Registration at L’Ormarins FMM from 16h00 to 19h00. This is where you will receive
your “registration/information pack ” and gift (if any), arm bands, lunch and cocktail tickets
and info about the rest of the weekend happenings.
To make it easier for all, especially arrivals from afar, I shall be on duty at L’Ormarins from
around 09.00. at the reception of the FMM, to accept registrations. Please note there are no
banks or ATM’s within 20 miles, so please have your receipts of payments made with you
because cash cannot be accepted there SORRY!
The cocktail party will start at 19.00 at FMM.
Saturday 22nd September 2012.
Early start, where coffee and muffins will be served, then the “rally” 08.00 from FMM to The
Palms Restaurant, Bottelary , which just happens to be the former Fouche residence, right next
to the GSM factory, that now has a new lease on life as an interesting breakfast /lunch venue,
where we will have a light breakfast before departing to Killarney Raceway for the rest of the
day.
We are required to be at Killarney by 11.00 and that could take up to 45 minutes in Saturday
morning traffic. We are trying to arrange a Traffic Police escort through the Killarney spectator
traffic to the Cape Town gate, for the final kilometer or two. Once at Killarney, we will be
taken to our designated parking area on the Karting circuit, where the GSM’s will have an
exclusive display of cars. From there, access to the circuit is easy, as we will need 23 open top
cars to drive celebrity drivers around the circuit during lunch break. If we don’t manage enough
Darts, Peanuts will arrange a few possibly Cobra’s to assist.
The race commentators at Killarney, and other selected people, will be talking about GSM more
often than not! It is therefore important that your GSM is well prepared for the event.
Sunday 23 September 2012.
Back at the FMM from 10.00 for the main display of the Jubilee. GSM will have pride of place,
and a master of ceremonies will be around with a “roving mike” to speak to YOU about your
car and involvement with the GSM marquee, that we are so proud of, and the whole of South
Africa should be.
This is where the main lunch, which will probably be a spitbraai, will be taking place
The FMM will also be displaying and driving some of their exotic cars.
Final figures regarding lunch and cocktail costs will be finalized at the AGM, as negotiations
with the major sponsors are still ongoing at this moment. You will receive final notification,
bank account numbers etc.
I hope I have covered all the areas, looking forward to seeing you all At the AGM on Sunday!
Kind regards and happy GSM motoring until then,
Piet van Niekerk.
