An update on the search of open Dean positions was given. The Arts & Sciences committee forwarded
their recommendation 10 days ago. The Parks committee sent their recommendation this past Monday.
The search is still on for Public Service due to the low amount of applicants.
A faculty/staff committee is reviewing the second and third year experience. A proposal was made to
change the structure of advising. There are budgetary implications.
It is proposed that first year and undecided students will have centralized advising. The students then
decide if they will move to a department/school advisor where they will meet regularly with a faculty
member or stay with the centralized area. The central advising area will be overseen by Student
Development. They will also work with the Career Center.
The Pius Library now has a café. Monies have been added to the library budget to increase collections,
upgrade and add computers.
New Programs added include: Doisy College of Health Sciences-Radiation Therapy, Athletic Training,
and Cytotechnology
The Law School has seen more growth in enrollment.
There was an increase to 175 admitted to the School of Medicine this year. Up to 200 will be admitted in
the coming years.
With the hiring of the Vice Provost for Research, of Dr. Michael Dockter, we will better understand &
enhance research capabilities.
The new Research Building will open this August/September. Floors are assigned to focus on
interdisciplinary teams.
Regarding Athletics, the Volleyball team made it to the NCAA tourney for the first time, the other teams
are doing well.
Another major SLU is looking to develop is Environmental Science/Environmental Studies with the
possibility of an Environmental Sciences Research Center (Biology & E &AS).
Q & A:
When will the deans be hired? Hopefully, by this July.
Why did we lose deans? In the case of Parks, we needed to achieve greater stability in planning
and fiscal responsibilities. Arts & Sciences was ready when the search began. Public Service
began their search later than the other schools (end of fall). This school includes Professional
Studies & Social Work.
Is there a problem recruiting strong math & science majors? Not at SLU. We do not have a large
international population. We need to do more to recruit them.
We know that undergraduate tuition dollars drives the budget. Where do graduate dollars fit in? A
number of strong programs drive the budget (Law, Medicine, MBA-Professional Programs).
Research can increase monies. A number of our departments do not make money, but are top
programs nationally.
Banner concerns were brought up. Dr. Weixlmann noted that earlier this week, a significant error
occurred, but was not Banner related but a web problem. SLU is at a reasonable place with
implementation. A data warehouse is being built. Banner allows one to search data & pull things
together.
NEW BUSINESS:
Susan Torretta announced that there will be additional parking options in the Laclede Garage. Beginning this
summer, there will be the option of 24/7 reserved, numbered spaces. Let her know ASAP if you or anyone you
know would be interested.
OLD BUSINESS:
2
Smoking Policy-was approved by the PCC and will be implemented. Kathy Hagedorn is working with Jeff
Fowler on the implementation. Smoking restrictions are in the discussion stages at the Frost campus.
The Graduate School Tuition-see meeting agenda.
The SAC on-line survey will be forwarded in the very near future. Please complete so we can have feedback as
to better serve the community of staff at SLU.
