Recommendation 29 of Education for Tomorrow’s World was as follows:
That existing skills-based undergraduate diploma courses comprising eight units equivalent to a major
(e.g. Diploma in Modern Languages) continue to be offered, provided that they can be undertaken
only if the student is enrolled concurrently for an undergraduate degree or is a graduate.
Following discussions in recent months in various forums across the University, the Senior
Academic Reviewer, W/Professor Ian Reid, prepared a paper entitled Undergraduate Diplomas:
Proposals for change. The recommendations in the paper reflected an identified need for a
vehicle to permit graduates to pursue a major in a new field of study. This had been met
previously by courses, such as the Bachelor of Science and Technology, which would not form
part of the New Courses structure.
The recommendations were considered by Academic Council at its meeting on 7 September
2011, when it was resolved (R169/11) to recommend:
(i)
that enrolment in an undergraduate diploma normally be open only to graduates;
...
(viii) to prevent proliferation of undergraduate diploma titles and repeated enrolment by any
student in sub-bachelor courses within the same area of knowledge, there be only four
qualifications available: Diploma in Arts, Diploma in Commerce, Diploma in Design and Diploma
in Science (within each of which a wide range of different majors may be offered);
(ix) that the University resolve to extend undergraduate diplomas beyond ‘skills-based’ fields,
making them potentially available in all fields that offer a major; and that the principle embodied
in Recommendation 29 in the Review of Course Structures report be modified accordingly;
...
In recognition of the University’s commitment to encouraging the study of languages, Council
approved that the Diploma in Modern Languages continue to be offered concurrently with a
bachelor’s degree course pending a comprehensive review in 2013.
RESOLVED – 56
to approve that the Diploma in Arts, Diploma in Commerce, Diploma in Design and Diploma in
Science be established effective 2012.
