THE ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS
The Joan Long Award and the Jonathan Dennis Award recognize outstanding film history theory or practice
They are the Association's highest honour, awarded in recognition of outstanding contribution to the
understanding and/or practice of film history in Australia and New Zealand.
The Joan Long Award commemorates the major contribution of the late producer, director and screenwriter
whose passion for the medium of film, its future, its institutions, and the preservation of its history in Australia,
was both selfless and inspiring. Among her many achievements, Joan's documentaries The Pictures That Moved
(1968) and The Passionate Industry (1971) remain landmarks in their field.
The Jonathon Dennis Award is named after the driving force behind, spokesperson for, and first director of
the New Zealand Film Archive who died from cancer, aged 48, in 2001. Jonathan was acutely aware of New
Zealand's unique character and position in the South Pacific and worked tirelessly to promote it through his
writings, filmmaking, curatorial work, touring programs, and public advocacy.
These awards are peer-nominated. Nominations close on 15 August.
Confidentiality in nomination is essential and nominees should not be aware that they are being nominated for an
award. Premature disclosure of details may prejudice consideration of the nomination.
Nominations are considered by the Film and History Conference organizers in consultation with the Awards
Convenors and the Conference Patrons. More than one award may be made each year if there are multiple
nominations which are considered worthy of the award. Details are published only when a nomination is
successful.
