THE FACULTY/GROUP
RMIT University Library with a collection of over 750,000 volumes and 169 equivalent full-time
staff and over 700 information terminals is a rapidly developing, busy university library system.
Under the co-ordination of the University Librarian and the Executive, it comprises four principal
libraries, the Swanston Library, the Bundoora Library, the Business Library and the Carlton Library,
as well as a number of distributed library services on other sites. This includes a library service at
the Brunswick Campus. It is undertaking a major program of building redevelopment and is
continuing to build its reputation for innovation in the delivery of services and support programs for
the academic activities of the University.
The RMIT University Library is a group within the Resources Division reporting to the Pro ViceChancellor, Academic Services

JOB SUMMARY
The major focus of this position is to undertake rostered service point activities at the Aeorospace
Resource Centre along with the delivery of basic information literacy and collection maintenance in
nominated areas.
Any member of the library staff will be required to assist in other areas of library operations for limited
periods, at the direction of the Team Leader.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS
The position reports to the Senior Liaison Librarian managing the Aerospace Resource Centre site.
No positions report directly to this position.

KEY OBJECTIVES
6.1
RMIT community is provided with expert library reference and information services.
6.2
Partnerships that facilitate the Teaching, Learning and Research strategies of the University
are supported, including library input into development and design of curriculum,
collection development, marketing and communication.
6.3
RMIT students and staff are assisted in the development of lifelong learning skills through
the provision of basic information skills training.
6.4
Activities which benefit library customers including collection maintenance activities are
carried out in cooperation with other Units of the library.
SPECIFIC ACCOUNTABILITIES
7.1
Provide rostered service including loans, information and reference assistance at the
Aerospace Resource Centre information desk.
7.2
Undertake administrative activities in support of the liaison, information and reference
operations of the Engineering Faculty Liaison Team.
7.3
Assist with Information Literacy and orientation programs including the preparation of
both print and electronic publications.
7.4
Undertake collection management tasks, including the processing of new materials and
different formats, de-selecting items and assisting in the selection of new materials
7.5
Undertake rostered duty at other library service points including afternoon shifts, weekends
and public holidays when required.
Corporate Responsibilities

Contribute to the strategic directions setting and policy-making processes of the Swanston
Library Team and Faculty Liaison Team by participating in Forums.

Undertake specific Aerospace Resource Centre and Faculty Liaison Team projects and
tasks.
7.8
Contribute to the strategic directions setting and policy-making processes of the Library by
participating in working parties and committees.
Personal responsibilities

(mentoring, job rotation, secondments and joint group projects) and negotiating an agreed

QUALIFICATIONS

Associate Diploma/Diploma of Applied Social Science (Library and Information
Studies)
Or Working towards completion of a degree in the above disciplines.
Or an equivalent combination of relevant qualifications, training and experience.
KEY SELECTION CRITERIA

Demonstrated experience in a customer service role within a library service.
9.2
Knowledge of / experience in the provision of reference and information services,
including electronic information sources.
9.3
Demonstrated well developed verbal and written communication skills.
9.4
Proven ability to work effectively as part of a team.

Demonstrated experience with general computer applications and Internet environments.
9.6
Ability to work with limited direction and adapt to changing work practices.
9.7
Proven ability to exercise initiative and independence in appropriate circumstances.
OTHER RELEVANT INFORMATION
Due to the operational requirements of the Aerospace Resource Centre, the contact hours for this
position will need be worked over 9 days within a fortnight period between 11.00 a.m. and 3.30 p.m.
