AWARD SCHEME 2014/2015

Guidelines
INTRODUCTION
Run in partnership with Creative Scotland, this scheme offer awards to individual artists based or
resident in Glasgow towards the costs involved in researching and creating new work and is
open to artists working in any form of Visual Art (Film; Digital or New Media; Installation;
Sculpture; Painting; Printmaking; Graphic Design; Photography) or Craft (Furniture/Soft
Furnishings; Tableware; Ceramics; Jewellery; Knitting; Mosaics; Glasswork; Textiles etc).
WHO CAN APPLY
The scheme is open to Glasgow based artists only i.e. artists who live or work within the
Glasgow City boundary. Applicants may be of any age and at any stage of their career, but must
be outwith full time education, including any postgraduate study, before the date of application.
EXCLUSIONS
Funding will not be awarded retrospectively. Unfortunately, funding is not available to cover the
costs of undertaking major courses of study (i.e. lasting 6 months or more), whether part-time or
full-time. This scheme is not open to academics or other education professionals seeking
professional development funding.
Please note, if successful, you can’t receive funding from this scheme and any Creative Scotland
funding scheme for the same project/work.
CRITERIA
Applications will be assessed against the following criteria:





The quality of the applicant’s work
The expected impact of support on the applicant’s creative development
The clarity of purpose behind the submission and reasons given for applying for an award
The quality of the information/material supplied
The level of commitment to development of practice
Please note that priority will be given to applications that support the process of research and
development of new work. We aim to distribute the funding available as widely as possible, and
will take account of any support you have previously received from this scheme as part of our
assessment.
FUNDS AVAILABLE
Awards up to a maximum of £1,500 are available. Artists are encouraged to request the
appropriate sum of money required for their project and not to automatically expect to receive the
maximum amount available. The selection panel reserves the right to offer a different amount to
that requested.
EQUIPMENT COSTS
Funding requests towards equipment may be considered however the expenditure must be
clearly justified in relation to the new work being proposed. Applicants must clearly identify why
the equipment needs to be purchased rather than resourced in other ways, i.e. rental.
For any applications requesting funding towards equipment, 3 reliable quotes must be included
in the submission. If quotes are not provided, then the selection panel reserves the right to not
consider the application. Applicants must meet 50% of the cash costs of equipment to be
purchased. In-kind contributions are not permitted in this instance.
HOW TO APPLY
Please read these guidelines carefully. Applications should be submitted by email by the closing
date.
Along with your emailed application form, six images of recent work should be attached as
evidence of your artistic style and ability. Please ensure the images submitted are relevant to the
application. Please don’t send applications or artwork in the post.
Applications that are incomplete or do not contain sufficient information on which an assessment
can be made will not be considered. Please ensure the application is adequate and you have
completed the budget with an amount requested. Applications must be emailed and not
posted. There is no facility to hand deliver hard (paper) copies of applications.
WHO MAKES THE DECISIONS
Your application will be considered by a selection panel, made up of artists and arts
practitioners including representatives from Glasgow Life.
TIMESCALES FOR DECISION-MAKING
The selection panel are scheduled to meet within 6 weeks of the advertised deadline. You will
be contacted by Glasgow Life if there is any change to this timescale. Artists can expect
notification of the decision on their application within five working days of the meeting at which it
was considered.
NOTE
Due to the competitive nature of the scheme you are advised to read these guidelines carefully.
Ensure you submit all information requested, answer questions in full and make sure there is a
balanced budget.
This scheme is usually heavily over-subscribed and demand always exceeds the financial
allocation, resulting in considerable pressure on the funds available. Therefore, we may not be
able to respond positively to all worthwhile applications received and it is not necessarily a
reflection on the quality of the work of the applicant.
CLOSING DATE
The deadline for receipt of applications is 12 noon Friday 6th February 2015

We are unable to accept late applications. Your application will be acknowledged within five
working days, please contact the Grants Officer on 0141 287 9837 if you don’t receive an email
acknowledging receipt of your application.
