Miscellaneous dating guide information (box

was originally named the Illustrated daily
news by Cornelius Vanderbilt, Jr. when he
started it in 1923. He copied the tabloid
format of the New York daily news, although
he rejected lurid and sensational journalism.
In 1926 the paper went bankrupt and was
taken over by Manchester Boddy, who
changed the name to the Los Angeles daily
news. He kept the tabloid format, with its
heavy reliance on photographs. In 1954 it

This collection contains 3,056 colored 35mm
slides of Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps of the
5-county region for which UCSC is
responsible under the UC/Stanford Map
Libraries Group agreement. The slides depict
over 1600 maps. Each map was filmed once
at full size, and some early maps were filmed
in four sectional exposures to provide an
enlargement to show as much detail as
possible for easier readability. The original
project of photographing the maps took place
over four years in the early 1970s, and is
estimated to have cost several thousand
dollars. In the early days of fire insurance
underwriting, it was the custom of companies
Sanborn Color
to have an agent inspect each property

Most of the collection is used
heavily. It is easier to say
that there are some flights
that only cover the Santa
Cruz harbor, and these are
the least-used flights. There
are approximately 8 of these,
out of 223 flights.
Downtown Santa Cruz,
lumbering/logging
Weston, Baer, Hyde
Maps of the city of Santa
Cruz are probably the most
heavily used.

efficient, detailed maps were created that
enabled the insurance underwriter to read
and interpret the printed map in his office, and
issue the fire protection coverage accordingly.
This demand for maps created the Sanborn
Map Company of New York in 1866. The
maps show details of construction, including
materials in walls and roof, street information
such as width of the street and location of
water and electrical lines, the dimensions of
the property, etc. In commercial areas the
name of the business is usually given. These
maps provide an invaluable detailed record of
the growth of towns, and of the businesses
that came and went over the years. They
also document changes made to natural
resources such as creeks and woodlands.
The earliest maps are of1883 Santa Cruz; the
earliest maps of Monterey are 1885. The
latest maps are of 1960 Santa Cruz.

Revised March, 2003
Campus: Name of Collection/Unit: Content of the Collection
This project has made available to the general public and to schools a
collection of rare visual images in the Chicano cultural arts. These
cataloged images were drawn from the archives of four of the largest
Chicano/Latino cultural centers in California. The centers' unique
collections were established earlier in CEMA so that they could be
preserved and made accessible for research and study. These centers
include San Diego's Centro Cultural de la Raza, San Francisco's
Galeria de la Raza, Sacramento's Royal Chicano Air Force, and Los
Angeles' Self-Help Graphics and Art. The Chicano Art Digital Image
Collection is the name given to this project that has made a Chicano
visual arts digital image collection accessible to Internet users. This
digital image collection now amounts to close to 1,400 visual arts
images that were selected from the vast slide collections in the
archives of the four cultural centers. The selections represent many
