The selection of simple words studied are based on the student’s own personal, functional, informative and cooperative needs, wants and interests in the workplace or general community. For example, following single word type directions, instructions or warnings as displayed on familiar instructional or health and safety signs when present out of context e.g. reads simple instructions or warnings when not accompanied by a related picture or symbol such as, open, close, enter, exit, male, female, left, right, up, down, danger, poison, number words related to a given task or job, scheduled event to be performed on a given day of week or month of year as displayed on calendar. Identifying specific simple words as related to the learner’s general community environment when not presented in association with a matching picture or symbol. For example; street name, suburb, name of workplace, police, bus stop, taxi, simple words from local newspaper, enter and exit,, food item names and prices, written names of coins and notes, written number words, days of the week, a limited number of Dolch everyday high frequency words, simple words derived from a study of phonics, syllables and spelling rules. It is recommended that study activities relate to real life situations requiring the student to actively engage with the study material. For example, from a related group of words ask the student to point to his/her favourite food, current job or a specific family member.
