Andrew Randall,
President
it was a remarkable day honoring remarkable people. After a delicious brunch by Bonnie Davis
Catering, we gathered to honor the people who make Park Synagogue so special. We celebrated
our 2013 Centerites, Judy & Steve Willensky, the wonderful Park volunteers (over 900 this year!),
and our students who exemplify the best in our young members. We bid a fond farewell to Park
Preschool Director, Kim Lausin, and welcomed her successor, Anne Sportas. Finally, we thanked the
outgoing members of the Board and voted in our new Board members to work as a team toward our
goals. During the meeting, I mentioned a few initiatives that the Board and our tireless committee
members have focused on over the past year. I am happy to report
that we are within our budgets, have increased membership, sought
out more development opportunities, and continue to provide the
best educational and social programming to our congregation and
community! I encourage you to invite your non-affiliated friends and
family to join you at the next Park event, so they can experience the
warmth and caring that is our hallmark and legacy. It is a great honor
to be part of this extraordinary community. I look forward to a great

Steve & Judy Willensky, the 2013 Centerites, with Rabbi Skoff
Judy Willensky grew up seeing Park Synagogue’s
central place in her parents’ lives, and has continued that
devotion and added her own loving touch. Her mother,
Millie Klein, and father, Harvey Klein (of blessed memory),
were also named Centerites when Judy was a young
girl. Judy has held many positions at Park Synagogue,
and along with husband, Steve, co-chaired the wildly
successful Rabbi Skoff 20th Anniversary Celebration
and The Park Synagogue Art Show. Judy’s community
involvements are many having profoundly influenced
the lives of many Clevelanders.

Young Adult Membership
Upcoming events perfect for guests
From birth through age 17, Park Synagogue members’
children are included in their family’s synagogue
membership. At age 18 or high school graduation, children
of Park members are no longer included in their family’s
membership and should have their own separate, special
membership, a Young Adult Membership. This membership,
created many years ago for teenagers and young adults,
helps keep young adults connected to the synagogue and to
Judaism at a time when many drift away from religion.
 Shabbat Services on Friday night at Park Synagogue East or Saturday morning at Park Synagogue Main. Outdoor Shabbat Services are a real novelty for guests!

Preschool Open House on July 18

PJ Shabbat on July 19

Summer Splash Party on August 4
The one-time (not yearly) fee for a Young Adult Membership
is $54.00, which covers the young adult up to age 25 or
marriage, whichever comes first. Park also offers an incentive
to parents to make their teenagers a Young Adult Member at
age 16 or 17 by offering this membership for the one-time
fee of only $36.00.
 Picnic in the Park on August 18 (free for prospective members)
 Religious School Opening Day Ice Cream Social on August 25
 And many other programs going on this summer and fall
Whichever plan a Park parent chooses, the Young Adult
Membership entitles the young adult to his/her own High
Holiday ticket, coordinated with those of the parents. He/she
will receive a monthly Park Bulletin (when living at college
or away from home) and all other benefits of membership.
Make an important investment in your young adult’s future
as a Jew – make him/her a Park Young Adult Member!
If you have any questions or names of prospective
members, please contact Ellen Petler, Membership &
Program Director, at epetler@parksyn.org or

1963 Confirmation Reunion
A Trip Down Memory Lane!
Our Park Family
We are very fortunate to be part
of a synagogue that truly is a
family. When Jerry developed a
health problem at Confirmation
services, many people rushed
to his aid, among them several
physicians.
On May 25th, eighteen members of the 1963 Confirmation
Class had a 50th Reunion, including a group aliyah during
Shabbat services and a lovely luncheon on The Bridge. Class
members came into Cleveland for the reunion from Florida,
Maryland, Akron, and Columbus. They were also fortunate to
have two of their teachers in attendance—Allan Bellin and
Dr. Simon Ostrach. It was a day full of good memories!
Our family received many phone calls of concern from
congregants, Rabbi Skoff, Rabbi Marcus, Cantor Pisman, and
Gadi Galili. Thank you for your care and prayers. To us, that's
what it means to be in the Park Family.
Sincerely,
Florence & Jerry Lander
P.S. - Jerry is doing very well and we'll see you at services!

If you haven’t seen the “Under the Dome” Mendelsohn

March, and many visitors have marveled at the incredible
story of the building of Park Synagogue Main.

A new bronze plaque installed at the front entrance of Park
Synagogue Main was designed and donated by member
Joel Glass, as part of the “Under Mendelsohn's Dome”
program held in March.
October 27 - November 6, 2013
Join Rabbi Sharon Marcus on a very special journey
to Israel this fall. Spend one week touring with Park
Synagogue women, then join an international women’s
mission in Jerusalem for four days of political action and
education. Trip highlights include:
• Gourmet meals and 5-star hotels
• Ethiopian Center with coffee ceremony and
Yemenite evening
• Wine & chocolate tasting tour at Tishbi Winery
• Lunch at Meiri cheese factory
• Art galleries and fabulous shopping
• Women’s program with our sister city, Beit Shean
• Machaneh Yehuda shopping and cooking workshop
with Israeli chef
• Rosh Chodesh Kislev at the Kotel with Women of the
Wall
• Study sessions with women scholars
It has been Joel's long-time goal to permanently recognize
Mendelsohn, a world-class architect, whose work
spanned four continents. Mendelsohn's iconic design of
Park Synagogue Main ultimately revolutionized modern
synagogue architecture in America. Other notable
architects followed with modern synagogue designs, but
Park Synagogue was the forerunner of this style.
Joel proudly notes that some of his family members had
a personal relationship with Eric Mendelsohn. His cousin,
architect Gerald Davis, is the last surviving member of
the Mendelsohn's San Francisco staff, where he worked
on Park's plans, as well as other synagogue designs. Now
retired and living in England, Gerald recently authenticated
the Mendelsohn sketches that are on display in the Parlors
for the “Under the Dome” exhibit. Gerald's father, Norman
Davis, had a close friendship with Mendelsohn, often taking
family vacations together.
According to Joel, when Mendelsohn had a difficult time
establishing his new practice in the United States, he
reached out to Norman and other friends for help. Norman
contacted his cousin, M.E. Glass (Joel's uncle), an active Park
Synagogue leader and past president, to get Mendelsohn
an interview for the new synagogue to be built in Cleveland
Heights. Glass contacted Rabbi Cohen, who pursued the
recommendation until the
synagogue decided to hire
him. The rest was history!
Interestingly, Mendelsohn
designed a home for Glass
that was subsequently built
in the eastern suburbs.
Park Synagogue is grateful
for Joel's generous donation
acknowledging our beautiful
Park Synagogue Main, not
only as a place of spiritual
inspiration, but also as an
important example of midcentury modern American
architecture.

Mitzvah Day 2013 - A Wonderful Day of Reaching
Out to Others!
Park Synagogue has the best volunteers ever! Close to 400 people of all ages volunteered in some way for Mitzvah Day on
May 19, 2013. Thanks to all of you who shared your time and talents to reach out to others and to make a difference in the
Cleveland community. Because of all of you who volunteered for one or more of the 28 projects and/or contributed to our
collection projects, Mitzvah Day 2013 was a very successful day of mitzvot and tikkun olam – repairing the world.
This year, over 60 people either donated blood and/or were tested for bone marrow donations. We appreciate everyone
stopping by Park Synagogue East to give the gift of life!
A special thanks goes to the Mitzvah Day Committee who worked many months planning the event: Janice Adell and Stefanie
Shein, Mitzvah Day Co-Chairs; Joe Arnoff, Sandy Ellis, Estra & James Grant, Judi Greenspan, Barbara Gross, Laura
