Text A First Course in Partial Differential Equations, H.F. Weinberger, Dover Edition, 1995. We will attempt to cover chapters 4,5 and 6, and at least some of chapter 7. Homework Policy Exercises will be assigned for each completed section, but won't be collected. However, doing homework will help with the weekly quizzes. Students are encouraged to work together on homework sets and to use other textbooks as references. Discussion Session Each student must be signed up for the discussion session listed below. 44515 LEC A 4 WISE, S. 44516 DIS 10 0 LI, X. MWF 3:003:50p ET 202 25 TuTh 3:003:50p ET 202 25 In the discussion sessions the TA will go over recently assigned homework problems and will answer your questions about the lecture. Please come prepared to ask questions. In other words, try the homework before coming to the discussion. Quizzes There will be between 6 and 8 quizzes in the quarter, administered during the last half of the Thursday discussion session. Quizzes will be comprised of two to four short questions based on the homework problems that you have attempted. Homework assigned in the Monday lecture will be fair-game for a quiz. The quiz problems will be either the same as, or very similar to, those from the homework. Thus, if a student has made a good attempt at the homework, he/she should do well on the quiz. Examinations There will be one midterm exam, and a comprehensive final exam. The final exam time is predetermined and immovable. I will give at least one week notice (on this site and in class) of an upcoming midterm exam. The final exam schedule may be found at http://www.reg.uci.edu/registrar/soc/fes_06-07.html#winter Grades Grades are posted in EEE (http://e3.uci.edu) gradebook. The final grade will be computed using the following weights: quizzes 30%, midterm 30%, final 40%. Noteboard I've set up a noteboard in EEE (http://eee.uci.edu/toolbox/noteboard/index.php?board=4811), with threads concerning the exams and homework. Students should feel free to login and discuss problems or post questions to the instructor. I'll check it periodically and answer any questions directed to me. Cheating I hate to have to deal with cheating. While I understand the temptation to cheat, I have dealt firmly with those caught cheating in the past (twice in the last six courses I've taught at UCI). Please don't do it.
