Mississippi Professional Logging
Manager Program (PLM)
Logging is an ever-changing industry that brings a
high demand for new training on logging practices.
The Mississippi Professional Logger (PLM) training
program, along with other associations, provides the
most up-to-date educational programming you will
need to become qualified in the state of Mississippi.
This educational programming is centered on the
Sustainable Forestry Initiative. The curriculum is composed of four different classes or modules.
• Introduction to the Sustainable Forestry Initiative provides an overview of the Sustainable Forestry Initiative. This includes information about
the origin of SFI, as well as information about
communicating and working with the public, an
overview of biodiversity, endangered species and
forest ecosystems, and forest regeneration.
• Best Management Practices (BMPs) includes
information about the history of the Clean
Water Act and BMPs, road construction and
water diversion structures, pre-harvest planning,
streamside management and stream crossings,
mapping, and harvesting aesthetics. Attendees
also participate in a harvest planning exercise.
• Logging and Transportation Safety (Safety)
presents the OSHA logging standard, as well as
information about transportation safety.
• Business Management is designed for the
logging business owner and key business management staff. This module includes information
about forms of business organization, multiple
businesses, recordkeeping, the Fair Labor Standards Act, insurance, independent contractor
status, depreciation, and systems cost analysis.
Completion of the curriculum illustrates the good
faith effort of Mississippi’s logging contractors to
adhere to the Sustainable Forestry principles set forth
by the SFI Inc. More importantly, Mississippi’s loggers
have been under-served in terms of outreach and
educational opportunities in the past. Expanding the
current program to include a continuing education
effort offers an opportunity to provide both outreach
and educational opportunities on a continuing basis,
thereby ensuring that Mississippi’s professional loggers will continue to strive for environmental, economic, and social sustainability.

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
4-H
The 4-H youth program strives to improve the quality of life for Mississippi youths by developing youth potential
and by providing hands-on (experiential) educational programs. Program priorities include leadership development, life skills training, developing positive self-esteem, and empowering volunteers. Programs are delivered
through local county MSU Extension Service offices to volunteer leaders.
The 4-H Symbol
4-H is best identified by its green four-leaf clover with an H on each leaf. The four Hs on this emblem stand
for Head, Heart, Hands, and Health. These words emphasize the basis of the four-fold development of youths
involved in 4-H.
• Head: 4-H’ers focus on thinking, making decisions, and understanding and gaining knowledge.
• Heart: 4-H’ers are concerned with the welfare of others and accept the responsibilities of citizenship.
• Hands: 4-H’ers use their hands to learn new skills and develop pride and respect for their own work.
• Health: 4-H’ers develop and practice healthy living physically, mentally, spiritually, and socially.
The Four Essential Elements of 4-H
• Mastery: By exploring 4-H projects and activities, youths master skills to make positive career and life choices.
4-H provides a safe environment to make mistakes and receive feedback, and 4-H’ers can discover their capabilities while meeting new challenges.
• Generosity: By participating in 4-H community service and citizenship activities, youths can connect to communities and learn to give back to others. These connections help 4-H’ers find and fulfill their life’s purpose.
• Independence: By exercising independence through 4-H leadership opportunities, youths mature in self-discipline and responsibility, learn to better understand themselves, and become independent thinkers.
• Belonging: Through 4-H, youths can develop long-term, consistent relationships with adults other than their
parents and learn that they are cared about by and connected to others. 4-H gives youths the opportunity to
feel physically and emotionally safe in a group setting.
To join a 4-H club or become a 4-H volunteer leader, contact your local county Extension office.

confidence that make first grade a big success. By the end of this program, your child will have learned phonics and sight words, and be able to read independently.
• Entering second-graders: Children in this program will become fluent, independent readers. Children will
learn phonics and word-attack skills, develop fluency, build comprehension, and become fluent independent

good comprehension. Your child will improve comprehension, build long-word decoding skills, read more
