August 2015 Our Mission - Inspire a deeper and richer connection to Christ, our community, and each other. “For everything there is a season and a time for every matter under heaven” Ecclesiastes 3:1 Hands down – this is the most well known Bible verse in my family. It is the beginning of every blessing ritual we do – from the first day of school – to getting a drivers license – to the burying of a pet – to the remembering of a loved one – and everything in between – the ordinary moments of life and the extraordinary moments of life. It is the title of a book of blessing rituals that my brothers and sisters and parents wrote together years ago. It has become a way for me to make sense of and give shape to all that happens in the span of a life – the blessings and the troubles – the heartaches and the joys – the times of success and the times of failures. Ecclesiastes reminds us that God is moving in and through all that occurs and that in every time and season of life there will undoubtedly be hardship – but there will also be great blessing. At the end of June I returned from 12 weeks of sabbatical, a “time” in my life to rest and be renewed. As I have said on a number of occasions and in hopefully countless ways – I will be forever grateful for that time away from the daily work of ministry at Lord of Life and your willingness to see and honor that need in me. My need to be refueled came in part because of the “season” that Lord of Life experienced over the past couple of years. We went through a long period of transition from when Pastor Darrell left - January of 2012 to the time when Pastor Steve arrived – July of 2014. That “season” of life was filled with time of grieving and reflecting – circling the wagons and pressing on. Over the past year we have entered into a new season – a season of new leadership and possibility – a season of new relationships and new ways of doing things. Now I wonder, “What's this coming season going to look like for Lord of Life?” I find my heart filled with hope as we dream and plan for this coming year – as we take seriously this season in Lord of Life's life. We're 25 years old! I look forward to celebrating that with you – to looking back and more importantly – to keep looking ahead. What will this next “season” be for us as the church? One thing I do know is that God's spirit will be moving in and through it all – leading us – guiding us – shaping us – forming us anew! For everything there is a season! Thanks be to God! Many of you may think that there are not many things to celebrate in August, but I did find some! August 2nd is Friendship Day. The best way to celebrate this day is to remember and thank God for the great friends who have passed through our lives. Maybe you can take some time to call a friend who you haven't talked to for awhile or go out for lunch or coffee and let them how much you appreciate them! August 6 is Wiggle Your Toes Day! Now you may wonder what does this have to do with health? Well, our toes, foot and ankles are very important for our balance, support and strength. Did you know that you can reduce your chance of falling by strengthening your ankles? So do some foot circles, stand on your toes and back on your heels (with support if you need) a few times a day and you will be surprised how much this can help! Finally, one of the most important days is August 8 which is "Sneak some zucchini on your neighbors porch Day"! Just remember that this vegetable is really quite versatile and is easy to work with. If you are watching calories you can brush it with some olive oil (a good fat), salt and pepper to taste and grill. This is a great way to get your veggies. Please remember to stop by on Sunday August 2 and have your blood pressure checked! God's blessing to you all! In 2012, 17 members of the Women of the ELCA traveled to Liberia to visit and learn from the bold women who mobilized to end a civil war. The group visited Phebe Hospital, which was co-founded by the Lutheran church in 1921 and is powered solely by diesel generators. Phebe faces the very real challenge of daily blackouts due to generator failure and fuel disruption. There is one natural solution: solar What is the goal? The project aims to install an array of photovoltaic (PV) solar panels at Phebe that will contribute at least 75% of the hospital's energy needs, with energy storage to allow the hospital to function for a day without direct sunlight. What is RREAL? The Rural Renewable Energy Alliance is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization dedicated to making solar energy accessible to communities of all income levels. Founded in 2000, RREAL has designed, installed, and managed hundreds of solar installations. RREAL is a pioneer in the use of solar energy to address poverty. What will it take? RREAL is working with USAID to fund the roughly $2 million for materials. WELCA has pledged $200,000 of the $500,000 needed to support the people powering the project. What is at stake? Women and children face daunting health care challenges. 42% of children have stunted growth due to disease and malnutrition. Only 26% of births take place in hospitals in rural areas; maternal mortality is measured at 994 deaths per 100,000 live births, and adolescent pregnancy has risen to 32%. 4 How can I help? Visit www.skipthegrid.org and like us at facebook.com/skipthegrid. We need prayers, your leadership, and your generous donations. Donations can be sent to: NE MN Synod, Phebe Project, 1105 E. Both group leaders and group participants are needed! If interested, contact Tom Koop at Thomas.koop@claconnect.com or the church office at 218-828-9374. July 13-16, 2017 - Minneapolis, MN “All Anew” is the theme for Women of the ELCA’s Tenth Triennial Gathering in Minneapolis, Minn., July 13-16, 2017. The theme is supported by several biblical texts that speak of renewal. The churchwide executive board accepted “All Anew” as the theme following a July 20 conference call meeting. Because the Tenth Triennial Gathering falls during the observance of the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation in 2017, the theme resonates with reformation and transformation images. At the gathering, participants will explore ways in which the Holy Spirit changes us, acknowledging that reformation and transformation have happened and continue to happen within the community of women known as Women of the ELCA. Lord of Life Quilters Quilting will start again on September 3, 2015 at 9:00 a.m. and we are looking forward to an exciting and rewarding experience. Come join us and be a part of this exciting year as we look ahead to our future in the church. Join us whenever you can for a hour or whatever works into your day. We welcome all who want to help. Your help and Talents will be greatly appreciated. We have fun and good fellowship also. We are truly a Family In Christ. Christ’s gift of Holy Communion invites us to imaginatively re-frame how we think about our common, ordinary meals. Rejoicing in the gifts we have received from God, we respond by giving ourselves away in love and service to God in this world. Holy Communion is a meal where the portions are equal, where status doesn’t matter, and where there are no particular guests of honor. How might we be transformed through an awareness that everything we eat comes to us as a gift from God? 6 Today [August 2] is the 10th Sunday after Pentecost.
