System Check up – Fetal Pig Dissection Introduction The body has 5 major systems. In this lab you will dissect a fetal pig with 2-‐3 fellow classmates and identify all the components below and also describe the function of each in a definition style format. Each organ will be indicated with a colorful straw, much the same as they were done with the cows heart lab. The format will be done in powerpoint format. Take as many slides and pictures as you need to indicate the organs location in the fetal pig and list definitions for these organs Purpose To dissect fetal pig and examine the bodily systems and organs Equipment and Materials dissection tray digital camera / phone with camera straws scissors dissecting pins scalpel eye protection apron dissecting gloves fetal pig Couple things to keep in mind before we start Dissection 1. When using the scalpel or scissors, always cut away from yourself and others. 1. If, at any time, you feel uncomfortable during the dissection, inform your teacher and follow his or her directions. 2. After completing the dissection, dispose of the specimen and other materials as instructed by your teacher. Clean your work area and equipment and return the equipment to its storage area. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water after you have finished the dissection. Procedure: 1. Dissect the heart to create a cross section that will expose all the parts outlined below to build a power point presentation or a picture documentary of all the components of a heart . 2. This lab will be done in groups of 3 or 4 ( Surgeon, Surgeon Assistant, Photographer /Straw Positioner, Scribe/Text Researcher, IT committee (everyone helps put Powerpoint or Keynote presentation) Part A: Preparation for Dissection 1. Place the fetal pig on the tray on its back and cut incisions as indicated in figure #1. Please note that middle two incisions are on both sides of the diaphragm to keep it intact - From there is where you begin your dissection and photo shoot using the straws as points to help indicate the specific organs of the fetal pig 2. Using the probe and forceps, tease away the connective tissue from around the major organs to expose for good pictures 3. Indicate each with a straw and take a picture to include in your power-point presentation, use pictures in appendix 2 to help identify organs Apply and Extend - Preparing Multi-media presentation For each slide you will have a Title or Question - with a picture or a description – Contentpicture or definition Slide #1 Title – Fetal Pig Dissections – Body Systems Investigation Content - Picture of Fetal Pig on dissection tray in correct anatomical position Slide #2 - ? Title – Indicate organs & Systems in slide picture or being defined in that slide (refer to all bodily systems and organs in appendix 1 Content – Picture of straws indicating bodily organs or definition of organs Final Slide Title – The End . Content- Names of people in your group Either email or bring jump drive to class to hand in assignment - Good Luck and if you have any questions please don’t be afraid to ask for help or clarification Appendix 1 1.
