Seniors...It’s not too late for College!
We currently only have 24 seniors with a total of 57 college applications out. (That is low for our average)
Congratulations to those seniors who have already applied to school! For those that have not, it is not too
late to get your information to Mrs. Allison. There are deadlines to most schools, so make sure you are
watching those! (We always have students miss out on scholarship opportunities at Wright State due to
missing the Feb 15 deadline.)
The Always Important FAFSA (I can’t mention this enough)
Who even knew that the FAFSA existed prior to your senior year? However, now that you know, it is
imperative to complete the FAFSA now if you are planning to attend college next year. As you can see
when you read through the “scholarships currently available” some of the awards depend on you filing a
FAFSA. Don’t procrastinate...file your FAFSA now. If you have questions, see Mrs. Allison.
For your help… College Goal Sunday Ohio
University of Dayton and Wright State University is hosting a FAFSA workshop to all seniors and their
parents REGARDLESS OF WHERE THEY MAY BE ATTENDING COLLEGE IN THE FALL on
Sunday, February 14, at 2 pm. There will be a general presentation on the financial aid process. They will
also be doing a line-by-line review of the FAFSA. Any questions will be addressed by financial aid
experts. Register and see what you need to bring at www.ohiocollegegoalsunday.org
Don’t get scammed on your way to college!
I have had many phone calls from parents inquiring what is legitimate and what is a scam when it comes to
scholarships. Here are some lines that I have heard that are scams for all seniors on their way to college:
• This scholarship is guaranteed or your money back.
• You can’t get this information anywhere else.
• May I have your credit card or bank account number to hold this scholarship?
• The scholarship will cost you some money.
• You’ve been selected by a ‘national foundation’ to receive a scholarship.
These are just a few...to find out how to spot, stop, and report a scholarship scam, contact the Federal Trade
Commission at www.ftc.gov/scholarshipscams or 1-877-FTC-HELP
Grab Your Future…your education, your opportunities, your life!
Not sure what to do after you leave here? The Franklin Library will be hosting an informational night for
seniors and adults who need help accessing college or financial help for college. It will be sometime in
February. The date and time has not been decided yet…more info to come.
DON’T BLOW COLLEGE WITH YOUR
FACEBOOK
If you are a high school junior or senior, you are probably working hard to get into college. But you could
still blow it with something you thought was harmless fun; your online profile. Whether it’s Friendster,
Facebook, MySpace, Xanga or Live- Journal, you better have an air-tight online profile too. College
Admissions directors are now checking out applications online to weed out students amid increasing
numbers of applications. A U-Mass study interviewed public and private universities around the country.
The data showed that college admission officers’ usage of social networks to background college applicants
outpaced Fortune 500 companies who use online profiles to background potential employees. As we were
told at a recent meeting at the University of Dayton, “We don’t want drug and alcohol involved students on
our campus.
We recently revoked the scholarships of three students that displayed drug seeking and drug sales on their
My Space account.” It is important for high school students to realize that their social and academic worlds
can collide and sometimes it comes at the cost of loss of admissions or scholarships to the college of your
choice.
