What is the Internet?
• The Internet is a massive
network of networks. It
connects millions of
computers together globally.
• The World Wide Web is a way
of accessing information over
the Internet.
What can I do on the Internet?
• Find information
• Communicate (i.e. email, IM, Skype)
• Share (upload and share pictures and more)
• Shop (the web is the world’s biggest
shopping mall!)
• Play (you can play games on the web)

• Every web page has an address,
sometimes called a URL
• URL stands for Uniform Resource
Locator
• http:// stands for hypertext
transfer protocol
• www stands for ‘World Wide
Web’
• The domain name is the name
of the site – i.e. surreylibraries
• The extension is the type of
site: .com, .ca, .org

Using a Search Engine (Google)
• A search engine returns a custom list of links
based on your keyword search.
• When multiple pages from the same website
are found, the most relevant page is listed first
with the next page from the same site indented
below.
Google Image Search
• Visit http://www.images.google.com
• Google Image Search is a search service
created by Google which allows users to search
the web for image content.
• Filter image results by their size, type and
colour.
