Examples of rates changes for 2015/2016
The examples below are based on four residential properties across Auckland.
The 2015/2016 rates figures include an average general rates increase of 2.5 per cent, which works out
to an average increase of 4.2 per cent for residential properties, when split out from business and farm/
lifestyle properties, and the inclusion of the Interim Transport Levy of $113.85 (including GST) for each
residential dwelling. The average residential rates increase across Auckland was 9.9 per cent.
Same rates under the single rating system
Auckland has now completed its move to a single rates system. This means that rates increases and
decreases will no longer be capped. It will make rates fairer because all properties of a similar value
and use will be charged a similar amount of general rates, no matter where they are in Auckland.
Previously, properties of similar value were charged different rates amounts.

Effect of revaluation on rates
Rates are based on the 2014 property valuations. Last year, residential properties in Auckland increased in
value by an average of 34 per cent. The increase in property valuations has no impact on the amount of
rates money the council collects. If property values go up, no additional income flows to council. Property
values simply help to determine how rates are shared across ratepayers. If your property value has
increased more than the average, your rates will likely increase. While if the property value increase was
below the average, you may get a smaller rates increase, or a possible decrease.
