LOUISIANA STATE UNIVERSITY DEPARTMENT OF RESIDENTIAL LIFE FACULTY-IN-RESIDENCE POSITION DESCRIPTION Although the Department of Residential Life has established residential college programs dating back to 2000, we lack a formal program where students and faculty live in the same community. We sought a venue that could provide seamless student learning inside and outside the classroom. The Faculty-in-Residence Program will encourage structured interaction between students and faculty through experiences that promote social and intellectual development, academic support and advising in the residential college setting. The Faculty-in-Residence will be LSU faculty members who are invested in directly impacting our students’ residential experiences. They will work with our Residential Life staff to provide supportive living environments where students can learn and develop. The Faculty-in-Residence will serve as leaders, mentors, teachers and active members to all of our students living on campus. The Faculty-in-Residence will be the live-in faculty member serving all residents for a specific side of campus. GOALS OF THE FACULTY-IN-RESIDENCE PROGRAM • • • • • • 1 To support the academic mission of Louisiana State University and the vision of the Department of Residential Life To enhance faculty presence and role modeling in all of the residential communities To assist with engaging faculty in students’ intellectual, social, and cultural development through development of activities and programs In collaboration with the Faculty Director, to assist with recruiting new faculty with an opportunity to directly impact student retention, satisfaction and success Serve as an ambassador who works collaboratively with the Faculty Director of Residential Colleges to promote goodwill, resources, and relationship between the Division of Student Life and Enrollment and Academic Affairs. To engage in the overall mission of the Department of Residential Life and promote community and personal development for residents living in a community. EXPECTATIONS FOR THE FACULTY-IN-RESIDENCE TEACHING AND ACADEMIC SUPPORT 1. Teach at least one course (preferably a LSU 1001 course) in the residential community for residents assigned to that area of campus with academic departmental approval. 2. Collaborate with residential college rectors in the area to deliver Supplemental Instruction opportunities for residents who are not assigned to a residential college. COMMUNITY/ STUDENT INTERACTION 1. Provide 10 hours per week of direct student interaction and community involvement in the assigned residential area. 2. Participate in key events for Residential Life: Move-in day, SPIN, Staff selection/ training, and any hallmark events of the assigned area. 3. Attend one community council meeting per semester for all of the residential communities in the assigned area. 4. Develop and implement two co-curricular programs per semester for the residents of the assigned area. 5. Host one large event at the Faculty-in-Residence apartment each month for students of the assigned area. 6. Assist the residential college rectors and Faculty Director with the implementation of the Curriculum for Residence Educations. 7. Have a presence in the dining halls for the students. 8. Establish a regular faculty network to participate with the faculty friend program. 9. The Faculty-in-Residence does not have supervisory or operational responsibilities in the community. The focus is to provide developmental, intellectual, and programmatic experiences. ADMINISTRATION 1. Prepare a welcome letter/welcome video to all incoming students in the assigned area. 2. Attend one Residence Education staff meeting per month. 2 3. Meet with all of the Residence Life Coordinators from the assigned area twice a semester to provide updates on student interaction and assist with the nonacademic curriculum for the community. 4. Attend bi-weekly meeting with the Faculty Director and the Associate Director of Residence Education. 5. Be available to serve as a member on specific committees with the Department of Residential Life. 6. Provide an end of year report regarding Faculty-in-Residence goals and accomplishments. 7. Submit for publication, journals about Faculty-in-Residence program. 8. Collaborate with the Residential Life Assessment Committee FACULTY-IN-RESIDENCE LOCATION Selected faculty participating in the Faculty-in-Residence program will live in one of two newly constructed faculty apartments. One of the two faculty apartments is located in the Residential College Complex and the other faculty apartment is located in the Laville Honors House. The Faculty-in-Residence will have to follow all of the current Department of Housing and Residential Life live in policies. TERM APPOINTMENT Faculty members serving as Faculty-in-Residence will sign a contract agreement for one Academic Calendar year, renewable for up to two times upon approval of the Director of Residential Life. The Department of Residential Life reserves the right to terminate this agreement should any issues arise concerning inappropriate or unethical behavior. The Faculty-in-Residence must comply with the University and Department policies for living on campus and abstain from inappropriate relationships with students. Faculty-in-Residence who leave before one year will be expected to vacate the apartment by June 1st in order to make the transition as smooth as possible for new Faculty-in-Residence participant. SUPERVISION The Faculty in Residence will have dual supervision between the Faculty Director and Associate Director of Residence Education. 3 ANNUAL REVIEW PROCESS In conjunction with the Associate Director of Residence Education and the Faculty Director, the Faculty-in-Residence will develop annual goals for the residential area that he or she is assigned. Annually, the Faculty-in-Residence will develop a portfolio that will be discussed at an annual performance review meeting and will include the following: 1. A report of progress towards achievement of the residential area curriculum goals. 2. Supporting documents that highlight the learning experiences of the year which includes how learning objectives were met via programs or experiences for students. 3. Recommendations for improvement for the following year. 4. Evaluations from at least 20 random students from the area assigned to the Faculty in Residence. This process will be managed by the Department of Residential Life. 5. Feedback from the Residence Education staff. APPLICATION PROCESS Interested faculty should submit a current CV, a letter of interest, three letters of support (one from a colleague, one from a student, and one from the academic Dean/Chair of department) to : Bill Mattera, Assistant Director for Staffing and Organizational Development Department of Residential Life 204 Grace King Hall Baton Rouge, LA 70803 Phone: (225) 578-5155 Email : bmattera@lsu.edu SELECTION PROCESS Applications will be screened by a Selection Committee consisting of the following members: Faculty Director for Residential Colleges Associate Director for Residence Education 4 Two Residential College Rectors Two Residence Life Coordinators Two Student Leaders (RHA president, NRHH President) Former Faculty-in-Residence QUALIFICATIONS Eligible faculty must meet the following criteria: • • • Must be a current contracted faculty member at Louisiana State University Have served as a full-time faculty member at Louisiana State University for six years Able to be available to interact with students, staff, and other rectors/faculty members • Knowledgeable of general academic requirements, procedures, and campus resources • Commitment to the development of enhancing the Flagship 2020 Agenda • Able to live in an on campus apartment provided by the Department of Residential Life • Successfully pass a human resource background check PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: • Previous experience working with undergraduate students in a residential setting COMPENSATION Apartment: The faculty member will be provided a two-bedroom apartment, which includes basic cable, utilities, internet, and domestic phone service. In addition, the apartment will have a separate furnished living space within the apartment in which the faculty is encouraged to have programs with students. The faculty member will have to comply with all the current policies for live-in staff members. Meals: 60 meals per semester (fall/spring) will be provided to the faculty member. 5 Parking Space: You will have the option to purchase a parking decal for a reserved parking space near the residential complex that houses your apartment. Pet Policy: The Department of Residential Life allows full-time live-in professional staff to keep 1 pet in the residence hall apartment after completing all of the requirements for the Pet Policy. Office Space: An office will be provided in the residential community that you are assigned. You will be provided with a desk, filing cabinet, chair, computer, printer, and technology support. Programming Funds: You will be allocated a programming fund of $5000 per semester to assist you with your programmatic efforts and faculty network relationships.
