manage Odd Fellows Manor. In collaboration
with the Odd Fellows Low Rental Housing
Society, the Three Links Care Society Board of
Directors will be undertaking feasibility studies
and strategic planning with community stakeholders regarding the future direction of Odd

Affordable housing for independent seniors 55 plus . . . . .
The Independent
Order of Odd Fellows
since its inception in the 1800s, has always existed
with one sole purpose – “to improve and elevate the
character of mankind”. Now with many branches
throughout the world, the Odd Fellows continues to
be actively involved in a variety of civic and philanthropic projects on a local, national and international
level. Odd Fellows are also known as "The Three
Link Fraternity" which stands for Friendship, Love
and Truth. Three Links Care Society was founded
by the Odd Fellows of British Columbia in 1979
and operates under the same beliefs.
In the late 1960s, the Odd Fellows in Vancouver
realized the need for affordable housing for
independent seniors with little income. Through
government funding, community support and the
hard work and dedication of the local Odd
Fellows contingent, Odd Fellows Manor was
built in 1971 to meet that need. Situated in east
Vancouver and managed by the Odd Fellows Low
Rental Housing Society, Odd Fellows Manor is a
non-subsidized 44-unit apartment complex made
up of 29 bachelor and 15 one-bedroom suites.
The issue of affordable housing for seniors has
become even more critical in the 21st century, as
we are now faced with a large aging population.
Many seniors live on very low fixed incomes, and
face financial burdens after retirement. For those
seniors who wish to continue living independently
in their own homes and do not have sufficient
retirement funds, the situation can be very daunting – it is estimated that approximately 50 percent
of net income is spent on shelter alone.
Odd Fellows Manor offers seniors affordable,
clean, comfortable and well-looked after apartments with a caretaker to look after maintenance
needs. Rents are below market rates, and include
laundry,
cable, heat
and hot
water.
There is a
common
laundry
room, a large multi-purpose room complete with
kitchen and an anti-room for tenants to use and
enjoy. The North side of the building provides
spectacular views of the North Shore mountains
and more than half of the suites have balconies.
