OFFICE OF THE DEPUTY VICE-CHANCELLOR (DVC): TEACHING, LEARNING AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT DIRECTOR: LIBRARY SERVICES (1 POST) Ref: 03/2016/MMM/DIR/P5 (5-YEAR CONTRACT APPOINTMENT) The Director: Library Services takes overall responsibility for strategic planning, library stocks and services, marketing and communication, finance and budgets and human resource management. The incumbent is also responsible for library policy development and execution and liaison with academic staff, internal and external stakeholders, including other libraries. The incumbent reports to the Deputy Vice Chancellor: Teaching, Learning and Community Engagement and will furthermore be responsible for the key performance areas listed below: Key Performance Areas: • • • • Strategy development and execution o Documented strategies for the library and related portfolios (academic resources, student services, risk management and quality assurance, etc.) Policy and procedure development; o Documented and approved policies and procedures; o Updated Library rules and regulations for publication; o SMU audit and quality assurance compliance. Information access o Audit of existing technology and facilities in partnership with ICT; o Draft a technology and equipment plan for the Library; o Recommend a technology and equipment plan for approval by Library Committee and Senate. Collection development o Increase/revisit Library collections aligned to SMU academic project; o Ongoing review of the collections formula; o Acquire more full text on-line resources; o Develop digital resources to support research staff. Final Advert • • • • • • Marketing and communication o Develop a Library marketing and communication plan; o Implement a Library Services webpage; o Conduct ongoing information literacy/user education programmes; o Create awareness of new services; o Develop and implement survey instruments to assess Library service delivery. Partnerships and collaboration o Lead in producing high-value linkages and partnerships with other institutions, organisations and communities; o Inter-institutional, regional and national collaboration is fostered and facilitated; o Greater collaboration in identified areas between the University and its surrounding communities in Ga-Rankuwa. Human resource management, including performance management; Budget/financial management; Safety, health and environmental management; Monitoring, evaluation and reporting. Minimum requirements: • • • • • • A Master’s degree in Library and Information Sciences or a related field would generally be required. At least eight years’ experience in a Deputy Director or Senior Librarian role in an academic institution, a research organisation or relevant institution. Has demonstrated a track record of managing a portfolio within a large Library or running a unit of a reasonable size. Strategic leadership and people management skills. Demonstrated ability to network and work with a wide range of different constituencies internally and externally. A valid driver’s license. Computer skills (MS Office suite).
