Directions: You are to compose a 5 paragraph essay on ONE of the following topics.
It MUST BE computer formatted with the following in the upper left hand corner double
spaced:

AP Lang/Comp
Pre-Class Essay #____ (You will give the number of the topic that you are addressing.)
Requirements:
1. The essay must have a clear introduction with a catchy attention getter as the first line
and the thesis statement as the last sentence in the first paragraph.
2. It must have a clear middle with a topic sentence and supporting details for each
paragraph that refer back to the thesis statement.
3. It must contain a clear conclusion that wraps up the entire essay.
4. The essay will be assessed for correct grammar and mechanics.
5. The essay MUST BE double spaced, and the title MUST BE centered AFTER the
required information in the upper left hand corner. Your title should be creative and
original. DO NOT merely give the title of the book as the title of your essay.
6. Your last name and page number should be in the upper right hand corner of each
page as a header.
7. Make sure you use one inch margins all around.

Ethan Frome Essay Topics
1. What does the presence of the unnamed “narrator” in the story’s introduction and
conclusion contribute to the effect of the novel?
2. Discuss the novel’s portrayal of Zeena. Does her harshness seem realistic?
3. Examine the significance of the gravestone of ETHAN FROME AND ENDURANCE HIS WIFE. How
does it relate to the novel’s themes?
4. How does Wharton’s use of Ethan’s point of view to portray Mattie influence our perception
of the girl? What does Wharton seem to think of her? Consider the Introduction and
Conclusion along with the rest of the novel.
5. In your opinion, do Ethan, Mattie, and Zeena deserve their fates? Does the story aim to
teach its readers a lesson? Which aspects of the novel make us sympathize with the
characters, and which aspects seem to ask us to pass negative judgment?
