Hurricane Season to Prepare
Football season, holiday season, love bug season – what does hurricane season have in common with the other “seasons”? Football and holiday seasons are cause for family gatherings and
celebration. Love bug season is a gathering of
other sorts – clumps of bothersome black flying
bugs everywhere! So how does hurricane season
fit in? They all require preparation; whether it is
planning parties, shopping for gifts, protecting
your car or stocking up on food and water. Being
prepared for any season makes life a little easier
and in the case of hurricane season can literally
save your life. In continuance of last month’s article, I am offering a few more tidbits of advice
that will hopefully make your life a little easier
should a storm come our way.
There is information you need to know and
things you need to have in place before the storm
hits. Evacuation routes; do you know at least two
- three ways out of your neighborhood and city?
What about shelters? You will need at least 3
days worth of food and water. It is recommended by the American Red Cross that you supply at
least 1 gallon of water per person per day. A few
more items to add to your hurricane kit: whistles
(so people can hear you call for help), wet wipes
(hygiene) and a camera (document damage after
the storm). First aid kits are also an essential part
of your hurricane kit.
This is also a good time to review your home
insurance policy. Check over your coverage
and deductible amounts. If you have valuable
items in your home such as jewelry or artwork
you may want to discuss scheduling them onto
your policy. It would also be worthwhile to inquire about flood insurance, if you do not already
have a flood policy in effect. Flood insurance is
relatively inexpensive but there is a 30 day wait
for current homeowners. Contact your insurance
agent regarding any questions or concerns you
have regarding your home insurance policy now;
changes to your policy cannot be made once a
hurricane watch/warning has been issued.

T
he Villages Home Warranty office recently contacted Owens Corning Roofing and Asphalt (Owens Corning) on some homeowners’
behalf regarding isolated granule concerns with Owens Corning™
Oakridge® shingles.
The Home Warranty Office has been advocating on
homeowners’ behalf by working directly with Owens
Corning to address the issues raised. Owens Corning
advises that the granule loss issue is sporadic and
was found on only a fraction of The Villages houses
inspected for this concern earlier this year. Owens
Corning would like to assure homeowners that not all
granule loss results in a performance problem with
the shingle as some granule shedding is naturally
occurring. Please also note that excess foot traffic and
hail may also result in granule loss not attributed to a
manufacturing defect.
The Villages Home Warranty office has provided
Owens Corning with a comprehensive listing of
properties that have Owens Corning™ Oakridge®
shingles which they will combine with their own
data in an effort to establish parameters for further
evaluation. Owens Corning personnel will return to
The Villages in June to conduct on-site evaluations of
several residences to gather additional information.
Their visit will enable them to define parameters
which will be used to communicate directly with any
homeowner whose Owens Corning™ Oakridge® roof
shingles meet certain criteria and should be evaluated
further.
If you have established a warranty claim with
Owens Corning, they either have or will evaluate the
details and advise you of the results of the evaluation.
If you have not established a claim with Owens
Corning to date, please refrain from establishing one
unless you are advised by Owens Corning of the need
to do so. As mentioned above, this issue is sporadic
and therefore all properties with Owens Corning™
Oakridge® shingles are not affected. Owens Corning
has emphasized their commitment to resolving claims
for affected material and does not want homeowners
unnecessarily alarmed. Again, they will communicate
directly with any homeowner whose material meets
criteria which warrants performance testing.
Owens Corning has expressed their desire to
resolve this concern in the most efficient and effective
manner and will continue to keep The Villages Home
Warranty Office as well as the VHA informed.

A message from the President of the VHA
Are We Ready???
A
s I look back on May and the information provided to us by the
media and our “Evening with the Developer,” it amazes me what
has been accomplished and what we have to look forward to.
I remember early in the month a headline in the Daily
Sun “Defying National Trends” based on a Census
Bureau report on the Villages of Sumter and the rest
of Sumter County. If we look around it is not just the
Sumter portion of the Villages that is seeing growth.
A recent construction update from Highway 42 to
44 indicated 24 golf cart cart-accessible commercial
construction projects going on in the Villages.
Yes, I believe what is happening in the Villages is
defying national trends. Mark Morse states that this
area we call Florida’s Friendliest Hometown, and the
90,000 plus of us, can look forward to becoming the
14th largest population center by early 2016.
The annual “Evening with the Developer” brings
me to the Question –
• Are We Ready to create America’s Healthiest
Hometown? I believe we are, starting with
the hospital, Moffitt Center, and partnership
programs with USF Health. The first Primary
Care Center opened last December. An additional
projected 4 care centers will be up and running
by March of 2014. Add to that mix the $50M
Hospital Expansion projected to be completed
by January 2015.
• Are We Ready for the Villages to have a venue
suited for more elaborate stage productions? The
renovations planned for the Church on the Square
should give us just that and at the same time
continue with the religious and
music activities we now enjoy.
That Evening with the
Developer provided us with a
glimpse into the future of our
Villages and a testimonial as to what we as Villagers
working together with the Developer, our partners in
Health, Retail, and Entertainment, can do and what we
will look forward to.
One last thought – June starts Hurricane season.
Many of you attended the 8th annual Hurricane Expo
May 3rd.
That popular and informative public service event
showcased government agencies and local businesses
that can help you not only prepare for hurricane season,
but also find out what would be on hand in recovery
assistance if one does hit close to home. We need
to have our supply kit ready. Some of the supplies
you may want in that kit are: Three days’ worth
of nonperishable food and bottled water, hygiene
products, medication, flashlights and a weather alert
radio.
Weather radios can sometimes be a little difficult
to set up, and our District Public Safety Department is
always willing to assist you in programming your unit.
If you have not already done so, please join the VHA
or renew your membership and work with our team to
maintain The Villages as the best 55+ community in
the world.

Seniors Vs. Crime - Go Green and Lo$e Green
A
number of recent high profile incidents and actions by the Federal
Trade Commission (FTC) have put the issue of Green Scams in the
spotlight.
The availability of grants and other incentives to
encourage people to go green in their homes has
combined with general consumer enthusiasm for
energy-conscious living to turn “Green Building” into
a very attractive target for scammers.
Recent “Green Building” incidents included:
Failure to Deliver. This green scam usually applies
to the planned installation of solar power systems in
homes. Put simply, you pay (full cost or deposit) to
have solar panels installed in your home and they never
arrive. Neither does the contractor -- he disappears!
The Tax Credit and Grants Green Scam. It’s true that
you can get federal and state tax credits and, in some
cases, even cash grants, for green building, installing solar energy systems or using energy efficient
products like modern water heaters and furnaces, and
techniques like insulating your home.
Knowing this, it’s easy for high-pressure sales
people to bamboozle you by dishonestly claiming
you’ll get a tax credit or grant if you buy their product.
Unlocking Your Green Door. Crooks who want to
get into your house may use a green scam to convince
you to let them into your home.
When they get in, one of two things will happen -they’ll steal things from your home and/or they’ll
install something that costs a lot of money and doesn’t
do what they say it will do.
Green scams that involve inaccurate or misleading
claims about products or services have earned
themselves their own label -- “greenwashing.”
These scams comes in all sorts of shapes and
sizes to include:
Simply lying about the content or eco-friendliness
of the product.
Using words like “eco,” “green” and “natural” to
imply a product’s green credentials.
Concealing the “trade-off” refers to the use of
environmentally damaging techniques to produce
green products.
Some manufacturers give out irrelevant information
to imply they’re environmentally conscientious. They
may boast about excluding certain chemicals when
these chemicals are illegal anyway and couldn’t be used.
Seniors Vs. Crime expects the number and variety of
green scams to grow. The more Villagers understand
what it really means to go green and the more trouble we
take to check out dubious claims, the better armed we
will be in resisting false green claims or outright scams.
If you suspect that you have been the victim of a “green
scam”, you can contact Seniors Vs. Crime at either of
our offices in The Villages at (352) 753-7775 or (352)
753-2799, Extension 4253, for assistance.

Sumter County Vote Notes
I
was reading an article in the Election
Administration Report that I found
quite interesting so thought I would
share it with you.
As I read this article I thought
about the children I talk with
around the county. From time
to time one of them tells me that
when they grow up they want
to be president. And this being
America, the land of opportunity, why not? I would
never discourage any child from growing up to be
anything they want to be. But when I read this article
I must say, it made me wonder what has happened to
the American dream?
See what you think….
FEDERAL ELECTION COMMISSION REPORT
DETAILS MONEY SPENT DURING 2011-2012
ELECTION CYCLE
The Federal Election Commission (FEC) has
compiled a comprehensive summary of election
spending during the 2011 and 2012 election cycle. The
report, released on April 19, 2013, shows that more
than $7 billion was spent by presidential candidates,
congressional candidates, and political parties, and
political action committees in the recent election cycle.
Spending by presidential candidates in the
2011-2012 election cycle totaled $1.4 billion. The
candidates reported raising nearly that amount and
completed the election cycle with a combined cash on
hand of $5.5 million and a debt owed of $13.8 million.
The most spending by presidential candidates in the
past decade occurred in 2004 when disbursements
totaled over $2.2 billion.
The 1,949 candidates running in congressional
races for the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S.
Senate spent a combined $1.9 billion in the 2011-2012
election cycle. Of those funds, $ 747.9 million was
spent by the 251 candidates running in thirty-three
senate races. The 1,698 candidates running in 435
House of Representative races spent a combined $1.1
billion.
The spending figures for the 2011-2012
congressional candidates marks the greatest amount
spent on congressional races since 2002. In 2002, a
combined $95.1 million was spent on congressional
races. The combined total debts for congressional
candidates for the 2011-2012 election cycle is $107.2
million and the cash on hand amount is $211.1 million.
Spending by political party committees at the
national, state, and local level totaled $1.6 billion in the
2011-2012 election cycle. The Democratic National
Committee and its affiliates outspent the Republican
National Committee and its affiliates by $16 million.
Spending by Democratic political parties totaled $805
million compared to $789 million spent by Republican
political parties.
Political Action Committees (PACs) spent $2.2
billion during the 2011-2012 election cycle. Of the
PACs connected to organizations that administer and
raise money on their behalf, corporate PACs spent the
most money ($343 million) followed by labor PACs
($279 million). However, these PACs were far outspent
by non-committed or “Super PACs” whose total
spending was close to $797 million for independent
expenditure-only committees and $175 million for
committees with non-contribution accounts. The FEC
report is available at www.fec.gov.

Hurricane continued from page 1
Okay, so now you are prepared if a storm hits.
What do you do once a warning has been issued? If
you own a vehicle make sure your gas tank is full. If
you do not own a car make arrangements for transportation in case you need to evacuate. For those that own
smart phones, there are hurricane apps available for
download; apps to help prepare and guide you through
a storm. Red Cross has an app that will help you notify friends and family of your status during a storm.
Be sure to have cash on hand and verify your credit
card limits. If you have pets you will need a plan for
them as well. If you need to leave your home, turn off
your electricity, water and gas if possible and leave a
note in your home stating where you have gone in case
friends or family come looking for you.
Hurricane season opened June 1st and runs through
November 30th. I cannot stress enough the importance of being prepared this and every hurricane season. Although I have been to some great hurricane parties, hurricanes are certainly nothing to celebrate. We
will leave the celebrating to some of those other seasons and use this season to help us get organized and
prepare. Preparation is the key to survival; before, during and after the storm.

With the beginning of hurricane season, there is a
heightened awareness of the need for timely warnings.
Sumter County has an emergency notification program
in place for residents of their county.
This beneficial service is designed to notify Sumter
County residents of an immediate emergency situation
such as severe weather warnings. It is also used to
alert a neighborhood to watch for a lost child, an impaired individual or a dangerous person in the area.
In this issue of the “Voice,” we have printed a press
release about this service, “CodeRED Emergency Notification System,” which gives additional information. “CodeRed” can also be found on the Sumter
County Sheriff’s website www.sumtercountysheriff.
org Click on “home page,” scroll to the bottom of the
page for “CodeRed” and follow instructions.
A learning opportunity open to all Villagers is the
Resident Academy. This two and a half day event,
which is open to all new and old Villages property
owners, offers information about how our local government works. To register to attend a session of the
Resident Academy and become a better informed Villager, please contact Carrie Duckett at Carrie.duckett@districtgov.org or call her at 352-753-4508.
Pertinent information for all new property owners in
The Villages, and in particular those who have signed
up to make your home in Marion, Lake or Sumter
counties your primary residence (Homestead Exemption). Residents are required to change out of state license plates and drivers license to the State of Florida
licenses within 30 days of closing on your property.

S
umter County has instituted the CodeRED Emergency Notification
System - an ultra high-speed telephone communication service
for emergency notifications. This system allows us to telephone
all or targeted areas of the County in case of an emergency situation
that requires immediate action (such as a boil-water notice, missing
child or evacuation notices).
The system is capable of dialing 50,000 phone
numbers per hour. It then delivers our recorded
message to a live person or an answering machine,

THIS SYSTEM WILL ONLY BE USED FOR
EMERGENCY PURPOSES!
The primary use of CodeRED is to notify residents
of an immediate emergency such as severe weather
(for example, tornado warnings and other significant
National Weather Service bulletins), but may also
be used to alert a neighborhood to watch for a lost
child, an impaired individual who has walked away, or
dangerous individuals that may be in the area.
If you recieve a CodeRed message:
• Listen Carefully
• Follow Instructions
• Don’t hang up until you hear the whole message
• DO NOT call 9-1-1 unless instructed
The system is only as good as the telephone
database supporting it.
If your phone number is not in the database, you will
not be called. The CodeRED system not only offers
faster calling rates and improved message delivery, it
gives individuals and businesses the ability to add their
own phone numbers directly to the system’s telephone
database. This is an extremely important feature.

The Villages
by the Numbers
(Answers on page 12)
With over 10,000 tee times available
each day, Villagers generated record
statistics last year on The Villages 11
Championship Golf and 30 Executive
Golf Courses’ 540 holes of golf.
1. How many rounds of golf were played
in The Villages in 2012?
2. How many Villagers played golf in
2012?
3. With 540 holes of golf and about
11,000 tee times per day available
at peak season, how many times per
year can a dedicated Villager golfer
actually play golf?
4. How many times did Villagers exceed
10,000 rounds of golf in a single day
in 2012?
You might

and even know what
they are.
