CNA/GNA ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
1. Take and pass the reading comprehension (45+) in the college testing
center BEFORE registering for the Theory course.
2. Purchase the textbook, Nursing Assistant: A Humanistic Approach to
Care giving available at the College Bookstore (3rd edition).
3. Able to speak and understand Standard American English at a
functional level.
4. Obtain a criminal background check BEFORE attending the clinical
portion of class.
5. Obtain a CPR for Health Provider certification. Course is also available
at the College: HES-344. Must be obtained BEFORE attending the
clinical portion of class.
6. Have a negative TB skin test (PPD) or chest x-ray BEFORE the clinical
portion of class.
7. Present documentation of immunization OR titre (blood tests for proof
of immunizations) BEFORE the clinical portion of the course.
PLACEMENT TESTS
All students who register for the Certified Nursing Assistant Program will be
required to take the Accuplacer reading and arithmetic tests. This test helps us
determine if the student has the ability to read and perform basic arithmetic
assignments at the level necessary to be successful in the CNA Program. The
Accuplacer reading and arithmetic tests MUST be taken before class begins. If the
test is not taken before class, the student will not be permitted to begin. Students
have two (2) times to pass this test. The required scores are:
Reading Comprehension: 45.
BACKGROUND CHECK
The Maryland Board of Nursing requires that all applicants for certified nursing
assistant license undergo an extensive background check. Students who have
any discrepancies or charges may need to reconsider before taking this class.
ADDITIONAL FEES
Textbook = $85.00 approximately
Maryland Board of Nursing = $20.00 (Licensing fee)
American Red Cross = $95.00 (State GNA exam)
Background check = $57.25

Certified Nursing Assistant

The Prince George’s Community College, Office of
Workforce Development and Continuing Education, awards
a Certified Nursing Assistant Certificate to students who
successfully complete both the CNA: Theory and CNA:
Clinical courses. Both courses are approved by the MD
Board of Nursing. You may register for the Theory class
first and wait to register for the Clinical. The GNA Test
Prep will be scheduled according to the exam date.
CNA/GNA REQUIRED COURSES
HES544. CNA THEORY $750* + $50 lab fee
This course teaches life span development, vital signs, and
basic patient care skills. 84 hours of classroom lecture and
skills practice and 12 hours of GNA Preparation
HES417. CNA: CLINICAL $500*
This course provides practical clinical experience conducted in
a Prince George’s County nursing home. 52 hours of clinical
experience in a nursing home.
Note: All students must have an immunization, TB, criminal
background and CPR clearance before entrance into the CNA
clinical portion of the program.
HES344 CPR FOR HEALTHCARE PROVIDERS $70
This CPR course is specifically for healthcare workers. All
CNA students must have a CPR for Health Provider card
BEFORE attending the clinical portion of the program. Once a
CPR card is issued, the card is valid for 2 years. Textbook
required. 6 hours of CPR practice
