Challenge Based Learning
Salisbury Middle School
Salisbury Township School District
Allentown, PA
Students used the Challenge Based Learning approach to solve issues in their school and community. A variety of
technological resources was utilized to answer essential questions, find solutions, and create a final product.
Students followed procedures that parallel the 21st century workplace. They were given freedom to be creative and
self-directed, but at the same time were provided with support, boundaries, and checkpoints to avoid frustration.

Redefine Education through Digital Storytelling
Salisbury High School
Salisbury Township School District
Allentown, PA
Students from media classes create technology 'hacks" to create digital stories. After each unit, the students take the
information, and they write stories. Once written, they create a storyboard, then bring it to life using the educational
tools available to them including programs from iLife, augmented reality applications, Adobe products and their own
intuition. Focusing on the process of design, the students integrate as many available educational technology tools
possible, often using one tool to enhance another, and the products tend to reach redefinition all while
implementing the skill sets from PA Core standards.

The Versatile TV Studio
Klinger Middle School
Centennial School District
Southampton, PA
The Klinger TV studio is used for a variety of exciting projects throughout our school for all grades 6-8 and all areas of
curriculum. Our TV studio broadcasts the morning announcements via a live TV feed to the entire school. It has
added a creative new dimension to getting news about school activities to students and staff. In addition it permits
us to show highlights from after school activities such as the school musical and sports. Another aspect of the studio
is that it allows for many forms of alternative assessments. The assessments have covered skills learned in many
different curriculum areas. For example the students were assessed in a weather unit by reporting weather
conditions in Spanish, creating news reports about poverty in Africa, positive and negative numbers and differentials
using the NFL and so much more.

FIRST Robotics Inspires Girls in South Western Pennsylvania
Carnegie Mellon University
Bishop Canevin High School & Dorseyville Middle School
Pittsburgh, PA
The Girls of Steel FIRST robotics team is an all-girl high school robotics team based at Carnegie Mellon University’s Field Robotics Center
(www.girlsofsteelrobotics.com). The Girls of Steel team strives to close the gender gap in the STEM fields. Robotics is becoming
increasingly relevant to solving problems in our world. We are confident in our project’s capacity to inspire PAECT delegates to take
action and incorporate STEM more substantially in educational opportunities for their students. Our project benefits student learning
during the process of building the robot when they learn a lot about mechanical engineering and computer programming, and later
when they learn important business skills such as website design, desktop publishing, and event planning as part of supporting the
team. Most importantly, this project teaches students extremely important life skills, such as good sportsmanship during competition,
communication, and collaboration. No matter what career they choose in their future, they will be able to apply the skills they learned
completing the project. Our program also supports two FIRST LEGO League teams composed of boys and girls in grades 4 to 8 and two
Junior FIRST LEGO League teams composed of girls in grades K to 3.

Problem Solving with Lego Robotics
Nether Providence Elementary School
Wallingford-Swarthmore School District
Wallingford, PA
Fifth Grade students use Lego robotics kits to learn a multitude of skills. Working in teams of 3 – 4 students, the kids had to first
learn to understand and navigate the directions of simply assembling the robots and connecting all of the programmable pieces.
At the same time, they were challenged to learn the basic operating programs embedded within the robot. A second major
component of the process was the need for the students to learn to program (coding) their robots. Using Lego’s software, the
kids had to write programs so that the robots could accomplish a succession of more complicated tasks. Tasks included the
navigation of a maze based on pre-determined distances as well as a programming to move based upon contact with obstacles.
Perhaps the greatest learning occurred as students had to learn to slow down during the problem solving process. Often, initial
attempts failed! To succeed, the kids learned the importance of reading directions carefully and also analyzing their programs
for accuracy. Throughout the project, the students have remained challenged, motivated and engaged. They spend their spare
time creating new challenges and collaborating with their friends and classmates.

Computer Science and computer programming is a huge part of our present and future. With initiatives such as
code.org and Google’s CS First program, students worldwide are encouraged to discover the magic of computer
programming. Here at Whitehall Coplay Middle School, we introduce all our 6th graders to computer programming
through code.org. We advance that learning into 7th and 8th grade by allowing students to create special projects.
Students learn to code with Blocky Code and continue to explore programming with design software such as Kodu
Game Lab, Scratch, and Unity. Students plan, develop, and create their own games, animations, and stories which
they can share with family and friends across the globe.
