In our opinion, the best food event in San Diego, aka “Chef Showdown: Taking a Stand Against Domestic Violence.” This year’s event, the 7th Annual, was held Oct. 6th in honor of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The result set a new fundraising record for CCS while treating 600 guests to a night of lively competition, an incredible auction and magnificently prepared gourmet food and drinks. Co-chaired by Dee Dee Castro of Viejas, and Isabel Cruz of Isabel’s Cantina and Barrio Star, Chef Showdown was held at Legacy Plaza at NTC Promenade in Point Loma. Emmy-award winner “Sam The Cooking Guy” and Bravo’s “Top Chef” finalist (and executive chef of Searsucker and Burlap) Brian Malarkey provided lively and insightful commentary as the evening’s co-hosts. Judging the sextet of food courses was a panel of prestigious “foodies”: Bernard Guillas of the Marine Room, Ingrid Croce of Croce’s Restaurant and Jazz Bar, Michelle Lerach of Cups, and Troy Johnson of the Food Network show “Crave.” In addition to title sponsor Viejas, other event sponsors included Cups, ProFlowers, Cox Communications, Dacor, Standards of Excellence, Sycuan, and the Patricia and Christopher Weil Family Foundation. A team of culinary titans from The Shores, Kensington Grill, Harney Sushi, Truluck’s, Kitchen 1540 and Sea Rocket Bistro faced off against colleagues from Sycuan Casino, El Vitral, Cups, Grove Steakhouse at Viejas, Sycuan Resort, and Bali Hai. Taking inspiration from the Food Network’s enduring “Iron Chef” competition, the two teams were given only 60 minutes to spontaneously assemble their own six-course meals incorporating a number of “secret ingredients.” Additionally, the competition included a mixology component, with Ian Ward and Lucien Conner of Snake Oil Cocktails taking on Jeffrey Josenhans and Celia P. Kelley of the Grant Grill. Winning Team! Back Row: Paul McCabe of Kitchen 1540, Anthony Sinsay of Harney Sushi, Nick Shinton of Truluck’s, JC Colon of Kensington Grill, Lucien Conner of Snake Oil. Front Row: Chad White of Sea Rocket Bistro, Amy Dibiase of The Shores, Ian Ward of Snake Oil When the plates were cleared and the votes were tallied, the winners were declared by a sliver of difference. The winning team, led by Nick Shinton of Truluck’s, also included JC Colon of Kensington Grill, Amy DiBiase of The Shores, Anthony Sinsay of Harney Sushi, Paul McCabe of Kitchen 1540 and Chad White of Sea Rocket Bistro. Ward and Conner fought back from an infamous defeat last year to taste sweet victory as this year’s mixology winners. You also have become a regular donor to CCS, giving both your time and assets. What led you to do this? At first my participation in CCS was just an inspirational by-product of seeing my mom get involved, but it has evolved from that. At this point in my life I have had the blessing of meeting and getting to know all of the great people within the organization and have seen firsthand what their work does for people who have survived horrible ordeals and really need their help. That is where my inspiration comes from now. Every time I go to an event or see my friends at CCS, my inspiration grows. So, while everything started with my mom, any giving I do now, and all that I plan to do in the future comes straight from my own heart. Amy and Eric, what inspired you to make a planned gift to charity and why CCS? When I was introduced to CCS I immediately knew that CCS’ mission was congruent with the values Eric and I believe in so strongly. I wanted to instill that in Michael. Although, we have been fortunate in our own lives, we have seen through the eyes of friends, colleagues, relatives and clients, the utter devastation and disorientation that relationship violence and sexual assault can cause. I have been a board member for over 11 years, but really the entire Rypins family has been “on the board”. We’re all deeply committed to the cause at this point. Although we will continue to give annually during our lifetimes, and hopefully at increasing levels, it is our hope that by providing a substantial planned gift upon our passing, we will have done our small part to assure the sustainability CCS needs to continue to provide high quality and much needed services to the community. It is truly our hope that someday CCS, with the community’s help, will be able to end the cycle of violence that plagues so many families. In the meantime, we hope more donors will consider making a planned gift to CCS. For more information please call us at (858) 272-5777. In 2011 CCS developed and implemented an innovative strategy to help wrap multidisciplinary resources around our highest risk domestic violence clients. This strategy, called High Risk Team (HRT), involves representatives from CCS’ legal, advocacy, residential, and counseling services, who meet weekly to support domestic violence victims referred to the HRT because they were assessed and determined to be in extreme danger of murder at the hands of their partners. All CCS crisis intervention staff are trained to assess clients using the Jacquelyn Campbell Danger Assessment, an assessment tool that is backed by decades of research and shown to be reliable and have respectable predictive validity. Clients who score in the extreme or severe danger ranges are offered an opportunity to meet with the HRT. Those who choose to participate join the group either in person or over the phone, with their primary advocate by their side. The team reviews the client’s risks and strengths, helps the client clarify her or his goals, and collectively works to support the client’s safety goals and strategies. CCS has established three regional HRTs to serve clients in North Inland, East, and Central San Diego County. The HRTs have improved not only our responses to highest risk clients; it has also strengthened relationships among CCS staff from different departments and improved multidisciplinary teamwork overall. Star Employee Shines Ma’at started her involvement with CCS as a volunteer in 2002. As a survivor of child sexual abuse, Ma’at courageously shares her personal story in CCS professional trainings to equip our staff and volunteers with the knowledge and skills to make a difference in the lives of others who have been hurt by Ma’at Crook–CCS shining star sexual violence in their families. In 2007, Ma’at was hired as a Prevention Educator, providing outreach and education to youth in detention centers, runaway homeless youth, and kids of all ages in public schools throughout the county. In 2011, Ma’at was promoted to Training Specialist. She has been an integral part of organizing and improving our 60-hour Crisis Intervention Training, helping to preserve the stellar reputation of this training experience in the community. Most recently Ma’at helped launch Healing Journeys, a support group for women survivors of trauma. As a teacher and trainer, Ma’at is kind, caring, and direct—she is able to provide current factual information on hard-hitting topics like rape and child abuse, while fully engaging her audience and tending to their wellbeing. Among staff and volunteers she is treasured for her intellectual brilliance, creativity, compassion, warmth, humanitarianism, and advocacy for healthy, equal relationships. www.ccssd.org Page 4 Winter 2012 Winter 2012 Page 5 V-day 2012 is coming – there’s several ways you can be a part of it!!!
