Mission
University Housing complements the mission of NC State University through intentional programs, services and facilities promoting educational and
personal development of campus residents.
With NC State faculty and other campus partners, University Housing creates enriched living and learning environments. Living on campus is a
unique and integral part of the student's educational experience. Students living on campus will:
Create dynamic residential communities that embrace diversity.
Have opportunities for leadership, self-governance and civic engagement.
Expand individual responsibility and achieve personal growth.
Experience living and learning in a technology-rich environment.
Develop a strong connection to NC State University.

University Housing and Greek Life are committed to embracing diversity in all forms so that all people are treated with dignity and respect. We foster
inclusive communities of learners that offer everyone the opportunity to develop skills necessary to become contributing members of a diverse and

Raleigh community. We strive to offer residents a variety of opportunities to make sustainability an essential part of the way you live, play and work.

Freedom of Expression
University Housing is strongly committed to freedom of expression. Our Civility Statement is not intended to interfere in any way with an individual's
academic or personal freedoms. We hope that individuals will voluntarily endorse the expectations outlined below, creating a residential environment
helping all students achieve their academic goals.
Civility Statement
Living on campus provides unique experiences for students to interact with others from diverse groups and backgrounds. Residents engage in
interactions that promote learning and appreciation of each other's individuality. The privilege of living on campus comes with responsibilities for
personal behaviors regarding others in the community.
To create a positive living and learning environment, campus residents must be civil with each other. Residents are expected to understand the impact
of their individual actions on the community and change any behavior that does not support our community expectations, stated below:
As a member of our residential community, students will:
Speak to each other in a civil manner.
Recognize how their actions and language impact the community.
Treat community members with consideration and respect.
Refrain from displaying items that are disrespectful and hurtful to others.
Refrain from utilizing technology in a way that is disrespectful and hurtful to others.
Create a community in which actions of bigotry, oppression and hatred will not be tolerated.
Confront behavior or report to staff members any incidents of incivility and intolerance.
Student Learning
University Housing is committed to creating a living and learning experience by providing educational opportunities for all residents. These
opportunities primarily focus on academic success, engagement, civility, diversity and leadership. The criteria provided for each outcome listed below
demonstrates a progression of learning.
Students who live with University Housing will:
Outcome 1: Acquire skills to enhance their academic success
Criteria
1. Formulate personal academic goals
2. Implement strategies to obtain academic goals
1. Identify opportunities to connect with faculty and advisors outside of the classroom
2. Utilize resources within University Housing to support academic success
3. Participate in co-curricular activities that support their academic goals
3. Evaluate their own academic success
Outcome 2: Be actively engaged in the campus community
Criteria (**there is not a progression to this outcome**)
Articulate the importance of involvement in their community
Demonstrate the ability to create connections
Exhibit an investment in the campus community
Outcome 3: Develop the ability to interact with others in a civil manner
Criteria
1. Demonstrate skill in effective communication
2. Consider diverse perspectives
3. Utilize appropriate strategies for conflict resolution
Outcome 4: Develop competencies necessary to become contributing members of a diverse and multicultural world.

1. Demonstrate awareness of issues and topics related to multicultural competence
2. Demonstrate knowledge of diverse cultures and oppressed groups (i.e. history, traditions, values, customs, resources, issues)

Outcome 5: Develop and strengthen individual leadership ability
Criteria
1. Participate in leadership opportunities (ie. Attend meetings, become a committee member)
2. Articulate fundamental concepts of leadership theories and models
3. Apply leadership competencies

University Housing is a large organization within the Campus Life unit of the Division of Academic and Student Affairs.

Holladay Hall circa 1890
The first students lived in Holladay
Hall on the campus of North Carolina
College of Agriculture and Mechanic
Arts. By some accounts, Holladay hal
was unfinished and its floors covered
in wood shavings, the plaster on the
walls barely dry. The early rooms
were lighted with kerosene lamps and
heated with small, cast-iron wooden
stoves. Students slept on corn husk
mattresses.
