Common mistakes people make in fall dressing for exercise are wearing cotton fabrics next to the skin, not wearing gloves and hats in extreme temperatures and choosing the wrong socks. Not to say that yoga is new to Dallas, some local studios have been around for decades, but it’s popularity has reached a point of a Starbucks commonplace. You no longer have an excuse to not try yoga, but if you’re a runner and expect to continue in the sport for a lifetime with minimal injury then you will want to consider taking a sip. When I decided to start running again several years ago I quickly discovered that I didn’t have the same body that took me to the cross country state meet in high school. Like many new or born again runners I developed an injury that was due to a lack of flexibility but couldn’t be remedied by regular stretching. Once I worked up the courage to venture into a free Power Yoga class being held at my gym an eye opening discovery into mind and body began while an end to months of Achilles anguish was finally coming into focus. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. The medical community agrees that the human body undergoes changes after the age of 30. Those changes; decreasing muscle mass, strength and flexibility; can be linked to many of the most common running injuries from runner’s knee and Achilles tendonitis to plantar fascitis as well as others. Let’s face it every runner is an aging one. With each passing birthday you welcome a new year full of new possible setbacks and injuries. Just because there wasn’t a problem last year doesn’t mean you will not face one now. Aging High Tech Accessories The new Timex Ironman Speed + Distance uses Garmin technology and a network of global positioning satellites around the world. By using this technology it can accurately measure how fast and how far you have gone. You are able to track your speed, pace, and distance for any given workout while also having a continuous odometer. Another one of the really wicked features that the watch carries is the fact that you can use it for more than just one sport. You do not have to worry about getting tired or going up or down a hill and your stride length changing with the Timex. The Timex does not by aside the regular muscle contractions necessary to facilitate running and the resulting tightness will eventually reek havoc in the form of injury. Every injury has a cause but once discovered it can be avoided by simple prevention. A regular yoga workout of at least two visits a week can help fight the effects of aging and the negatives of running and the poor performance that results. The Sanskrit meaning for the word yoga is simply a union of mind and body. During a class a student will perform several different positions, called asanas, at the direction of an instructor. Throughout each asana you learn to be aware of every individual part of your body and how they relate to one another as well as the space around you. (cont. pg 5) " …..Timex does not Cody Brewer use your stride length to measure your speed; therefore, you can use it while cycling, mountain biking, rafting, skiing, rowing, kayaking, and even hang gliding. The watch itself is water resistant just like any other Timex (up to 50 meters), but the GPS unit is only splash proof. So it should not go any deeper than about a meter under water for more than 30 minutes. If they could water proof the GPS unit, then you would be able to swim (open water or pool) and know exactly how far you have gone. The Timex GPS can either be purchased in a 50 or 100 lap version. They have a countdown timer, have to be calibrated chronograph, different alarms, an odometer, and Indiglo with Night-mode feature. It gives you the option of metric or English units. With the purchase of either unit you get the arm strap, belt clip, a handlebar mount, and a reusable case for storage. When you compare the Timex to other brands, you find that Timex does not have to be calibrated and is 99% accurate. The others have a cumbersome piece that attaches to your shoe. The Timex GPS unit can either be worn on your arm or on your waist. Timex is a great choice. Group Events at Luke's provide support Looking for some motivation from your peers? Operational Excellence Luke's Locker is the KING of customer service. by Andy Lucas Since the beginning, Luke's Locker has remained committed to certain core fundamentals that provide value to the consumer. Offering customers top quality running and walking shoes, apparel, and accessories… providing knowledgeable and helpful employees… and producing local events and lending community support… are just a few of these original concepts. Even though we have evolved and refined our fundamental values in order to satisfy today’s more modern consumer, they remain deeply embedded within the organization. Today, they create the focus behind our mission to lead the specialty retail market in three areas. They include: 1) Product - offering the best products in the Running, Walking, and Fitness markets, and to our Communities. 2) Service and Product Knowledge - delivering superior service and product knowledge to every customer. 3) Atmosphere - providing a store atmosphere that is warm, friendly and enjoyable. These three components of value come together to create the Luke’s Experience. Yet everyday, our top priority remains to provide you, the customer, with a solution to your exercise needs that exceeds you expectations. And we do it in a professional and friendly way. As we see how new developments in the marketplace alter the playing field in the retail business, we recognize the opportunity that exists to continue to differentiate our Company's core values. Our goal is now to refine, and build upon Characteristics of Excellence that can reinforce our core values, improve our operations, and make our Company great. Each day, our store management teams face the challenge of building, retaining, and growing a staff that fulfills these Characteristics of Excellence. We believe that it takes a special group of people to combine skill, experience, maturity, passion and personal interest to successfully manage a Luke’s Locker store. Today, we have an outstanding group of people who manage each of our three stores. These groups are challenged by a combination of responsibilities, none of which is more important than creating a superior environment for our customer. They rise to this challenge by balancing Sales and Service responsibilities, with the Inventory and Merchandising requirements of the major product departments. In addition, they lead by example as each stand out as product experts and Customer service specialists. In Dallas, this Management effort is led by Gregg Martinez, Mike Lucas, Tiffany Newell, and Dustin Valle. In Fort Worth , this effort is led by Dan McAuley, Andy Lucas, Josh Ray, Cody Brewer, and Robert Webb. In Houston, this effort is led by Faron Young, Amy Cassidy, Sally Normand, and Bert Gulledge. We want to continually get better, both as a management team and as a company. Hopefully, you are pleased with what you see. I can be reached at (817) 247-6030, or at andylucas@lukeslocker.com. Thank you for your continued support. Marathoners Need to Hydrate Follow these guidelines on hydration: 2 hours before your run drink 16 fluid oz. 5 minutes before your run drink 4-8 fluid oz Every 15-20 minutes drink 8-10 fluid oz Note - 1 gulp = 1 oz Water is a good choice for shorter runs. A beverage with carbohydrates may be better for runs lasting longer than an hour. Added electrolytes in a beverage may help you stay thirsty and drink more, but are not essential, as you can wait to replenish these electrolytes automatically when you eat your next meal. Trail Running with Luke's Houston When is the next Huntsville Trail Run event with Stan? This event departs from the parking lot in front of the Laff Stop (across from Luke's) at 5:30am. The October trip had 7 first-time Huntsville trail runners, who all made it back to the bus without getting lost. This triumph occurred despite my leading a few veterans off course -- but I'm sure the additional miles they were forced to run will just make them tougher. As always, remember to bring water bottles, dry clothes, towels, picnic food, and a sense of adventure. We will leave the park for the return trip to Houston Page 4 by Stan Timmer at 11:00, with arrival back in Houston between Noon and 12:30. Cost for this adventure is $15 ($20 on trip day) per person. The trip will be made regardless of weather. So no refunds, please. Call the store for more information 713-529-0786. To reserve a seat on the bus, stop by the store. Or, call 713-529-0786 and we will charge the trip to your credit card. Hope to see you on board. Luke's Locker Yoga and Running Cont. around you. Before an asana can be performed properly the body has to be aligned from toe to ankle, ankle to knee, knee to hip, hip to chest and so on and so on with an end goal of becoming physically aware of how that alignment should feel. If you can understand biomechanical how the body should move during the running process then yoga might provide additional insight into connecting the mental with the physical aspects of good running form and possibly aid in additional injury prevention. During these asana, the mind requires focus to maintain that relationship without mentally becoming reactive to the stresses being placed on the body. Distance runners have to turn off the brain’s worry switch in order to deal with the pace the body is churning out in order to stay relaxed and focused. The connection between mind and body which yoga teaches can be applied to running and the benefits are huge once that understanding is reached. You may be flexible in one area or another but one visit will show you that touching your toes isn’t the end-all-beall to flexibility. Besides flexibility some yoga practices require and promote strength that goes beyond bench press and squats with quite a bit of balance thrown in. Where do I sign-up? There are several types of yoga to choose from and their philosophies differ greatly, but runners will benefit the most from Iyengar and Astanga (Power Yoga). The easier pace and concentration on flexibility of Iyengar may interest some while the quicker more powerful pace of each heat generating asana of Astanga may pique the interest of others. Although one-on-one classroom instruction can never be duplicated there are several great video tapes and DVD’s to ease your fears of public contortion, but I strongly encourage you to visit a runner friendly yoga studio first. Once you get the hang of it within the class you can perform some workouts at home and visit the studio less. If Check your flexibility at the door. you don’t know where to look e-mail me for a studio in The first complaint I hear is that I’m not flexible your area. enough. That lack of flexibility is the number one reason to consider yoga. What if I’m already pretty flexible?
