FLORIDA STATE SEMINOLES (9-2, 0-0 ACC)
AT
FLORIDA GATORS (8-3, 0-0 SEC)
TUESDAY, DECEMBER 29, 2015; 7:00 P.M. EST
STEPHEN C. O’CONNELL CENTER (11,548)
GAINESVILLE, FLORIDA
ESPN2 (MARK JONES, DICK VITALE)
IMG SEMINOLE RADIO NETWORK (GENE DECKERHOFF, KEITH JONES)
“The most underrated part about Florida State right now is how well Xavier Rathan-Mayes is distributing the
ball. The 6-4 guard has handed out 15 assists in the last two games and is averaging 6.4 assists on the season
after tallying just 4.3 a year ago. This guy has sacrificed his own offense thus far to incorporate both Dwayne
Bacon and Malik Beasley into the mix in Tallahassee.”

FLORIDA STATE CLOSES OUT NON-CONFERENCE SCHEDULE AT FLORIDA ON ESPN2

Florida at the Stephen C. O’Connell Center on Tuesday, Dec. 29 at 7:00 p.m. The game will be televised

nine victories in its first 11 games. Florida State enters Tuesday’s game against Florida looking to win its
second consecutive game against the Gators after its 65-63 win last season in Tallahassee. The Seminoles most
recently won multiple consecutive games against the Gators when the Leonard Hamilton led Seminoles
defeated Florida in three consecutive seasons – 2006, 2007 and 2008. Following Tuesday’s game at Florida,
the Seminoles will open ACC play as they travel to play at Clemson (Jan. 2, 12 Noon) before hosting North
Carolina (Jan. 4, 7:00 p.m.) at the Donald L. Tucker Center.
SEMINOLES’ 11 GAME START IS BEST SINCE THE 2010-11 SEASON

11 games marks their best start to a season since the 2010-11 season when they also began 9-2. Florida State

SEMINOLES’ BACON NAMED ACC ROOKIE OF THE WEEK FOR THIRD TIME
Dwayne Bacon, who recorded his first career double double of 20 points and 10 rebounds in Florida State’s
only game last week – a victory over Charleston Southern, was named the ACC Rookie of the Week for the
second consecutive week and school-record tying third time this season on Nov. 28. Bacon is just the third
player in Florida State history to earn the award three times (also Bob Sura in 1991-92 and Michael Joiner
during the 2000-01 season).
Bacon was nearly unstoppable against Charleston Southern as he scored 20
points in 26 minutes played, shot .571 from the field (eight of 14), was a perfect four of four from the free
throw line and totaled one assist. Bacon’s 10 rebounds all came on the defensive end as Florida State
outrebounded the Buccaneers by a 41-27 margin.
LOOK FOR FLORIDA STATE TO…
…Defeat Florida and win its second consecutive game against the Gators. It would mark the Seminoles first
winning streak against Florida since winning three straight against the Gators from 2006-2008;
…Defeat Florida and win its season-high sixth consecutive game. It would mark the Seminoles’ longest
winning streak since the end of the 2012 season when they won six consecutive games against Virginia,
Clemson, Miami (in the ACC Tournament), Duke (in the ACC Tournament), North Carolina (in the ACC
Tournament Championship game) and St. Bonaventure (in the NCAA Tournament).

FLORIDA STATE VS. FLORIDA – THE LAST GAME
Florida State defeated Florida, 65-63, when Devon Bookert’s buzzer-beating 3-pointer from the corner glanced off the
rim, then off the hands of Gator reserve Jacob Kurtz and through the hoop for the decisive points on Dec. 30, 2014 at the
Donald L. Tucker Center in Tallahassee. The wild finish was set up when the Gators erased a five-point deficit after a
pair of Montay Brandon free throws gave the Seminoles a 63-58 lead with 49.3 seconds to go. Florida’s Kasey Hill
countered with a three-point play, adding a free throw after his driving layup to trim the margin to 63-61. An errant
reverse layup attempt by Rathan-Mayes with 30 seconds to provided Florida with another possession for the chance to
tie or take the lead. Devin Robinson misfired a 3-pointer from the corner, but Kurtz collected the offensive rebound,
passed the ball to Hill, who fed Dorian Finney-Smith for the tying layup with eight seconds to play. It was the fourth
and final tie of the night in a game that saw eight lead changes. After the Seminoles broke the Gators’ press, Seminole
head coach Leonard Hamilton used a timeout with 2.6 seconds to set up the final play. The Seminoles led by as many as
six early in the second half after a pair of Brandon baskets before the Gators countered with a 10-0 run for a 40-35 lead
with 13:35 to play. Another Brandon driving layup and a three-point play by Phil Cofer pulled the Seminoles even at 4040. Hill, who led Florida with 17 points, countered with a runner for a 42-40 lead with 12:10 remaining. It would be the
final lead of the night for the Gators, who endured a 4:57 scoreless drought as the Seminoles ran off nine unanswered
points for a 49-42 lead on a pair of Cofer free throws. Rathan-Mayes contributed 13 points to the victory, while Bookert
added 12 and Boris Bojanovsky chipped in 10 for the Seminoles. Despite converting five fewer field goals, the
Seminoles prevailed in large part by outscoring the Gators 17-7 from the free throw line, converting 17 of 25 attempts.

SEMINOLES GETTING DEFENSIVE FIELD GOAL PERCENTAGE DOWN DURING WINNING STREAK
The defensive field goal percentage statistic is one of Seminole head coach Leonard Hamilton’s most favorite and is one
of the cornerstones of his defensive philosophies. Florida State led the nation in defensive field goal percentage in both
2010 and 2011 and played in the NCAA Tournament in both years. While Hamilton was the head coach at Miami, the
Hurricanes led the nation in defensive field goal percentage in 1998 – and the Hurricanes played in the NCAA
Tournament. Florida State has limited its opponents to a .408 shooting percentage during their current five-game
winning streak as compared to a .444 defensive field goal mark in their first six games of the season.

career game against Florida on Tuesday night. He will become only the eighth player in school history to start 100 or
more games and has a strong shot of breaking the all-time record for starts by a Seminole. The record for starts by a
Florida State player is held by Delvon Arrington (1999-02) who started 117 games during his career. Brandon has played
in 112 career games – the school record for games played is 139 by Okaro White (2011-14).

The Seminoles scored the first five points of the game on a

Seminoles gave the Big Ten the challenge championship by
an 8-6 margin. Jok scored eight of Iowa’s 15 points in the

Xavier Rathan-Mayes. The five-minute overtime period featured six lead changes and two ties after the teams finished
regulation tied at 63-63. The Seminoles forced overtime as
forward Montay Brandon tied the game with two free throws

State’s Devon Bookert missed a game-winning shot from just
after half court – a shot that bounded off the back of the rim
as he nearly gave the Seminoles the win.

Bell Hoping To Provide Consistent Spark off The Bench
By Brendan Sonnone
Orlando Sentinel
December 15, 2015
TALLAHASSEE — FSU reserve point guard Benji Bell does not know what each game will bring.
Some nights, the junior plays maybe three minutes. In other contests, like when he scored 18 points in 26 minutes
against Southeastern Louisiana on Sunday, Bell sees significant action.
The inconsistent playing time is undoubtedly tough for Bell to get used to, especially after averaging 17.4 points per
game while leading Northwest Florida Junior College to a JUCO national championship earlier this year. To adjust to
the sporadic action, Bell's focus is on quality over quantity. It doesn't matter how much he plays, but how he does
when he is on the court.
Bell refers to the mindset as "positive minutes." Whether he's in the game for five minutes or 25, Bell is learning to
make the most of his time.
"Sitting on the bench is kind of hard, but I'm mature. I'm not going to let that stop me from doing what I know how to
do," Bell said. "Being that spark off the bench, I'll take that role for my team."
FSU (6-2) could again turn to Bell Wednesday when it hosts Mississippi State (4-4) at 9 p.m. The Seminoles may be
without backup point guard Devon Bookert (wrist) for a second game in a row, meaning Bell would spell starter
Xavier Rathan-Mayes.
"Benji is the kind of guy that comes into practice every day, works his butt off and stays patient," Rathan-Mayes said.
"He stayed patient, waited his turn and gave us a huge lift [Sunday]."
Bell made all four of his three-point attempts versus Southeastern Louisiana last weekend, giving the Seminoles a
much-needed boost off the bench. FSU won 75-57 but struggled early and late against a team that was content slowing
the tempo. Southeastern Louisiana threw a hybrid zone defense at the Seminoles, exposing FSU's inconsistent halfcourt offense.
Having a shooter like Bell – who made 44.5 percent of his three-pointers last season at NFJC and connected on six of
his eight attempts from beyond the arc this year – to stretch defenses could continue to help the Seminoles' stagnant
half-court offense.
Coach Leonard Hamilton, however, warns that the team is not going to be overly reliant on the newcomer.
"You really don't know how big [a performance like that] is, because it's the first one," Hamilton said. "I don't expect
him to go out and score 18 every night, but we do expect him to become consistent with his effort and focus.
"He's very mature and he doesn't get rattled easily. Now he has to develop that mentality that it takes to be consistently
focused every night, but that's what we're all going through right now."
Bell admits that he's still adjusting to Hamilton's schemes. He may recognize where to go with a pass or where to be
on defense, but that knowledge does not come naturally. Until it does, Bell understands that his minutes will vary from
game to game.
"Some of the guys have been here for like three years with the same coach, so they know exactly what coach wants
and I'm still trying to find that out on the offensive and defensive end," Bell said. "I can feel it getting there. It'll get
there soon."
