EMPLOYEE THEFT INDICATORS
The following information is NOT intended to be a “foolproof” method
of detecting employee theft. Instead, these are “signs” or “clues” that
should be acted upon immediately when observed in your store.
CASHIER THEFT
ACTION OR CLUE
POSSIBLE THEFT ACTIVITY
1.
Blockage of cash register window so
customer cannot see the amount of sale
being rung.
Under ringing sale but getting full amount from customers
(building a “bank”).
2.
Cashier waiting for customer’s money
before ringing sale. (Cashier has a
choice: “to ring or not to ring”.
Not ringing sales, pocketing cash and / or building a
“bank”.
3.
Cash drawer open between sales.
Not ringing sales; building a “bank.”
4.
Excessive voids or overrings.
Sliding to friends and /or stealing cash from legitimate
sales.
5.
Excessive refunds
Cash theft; (look for illegible signatures on high dollar
refunds or common names, addresses, etc.)
6.
Excessive “No-Sale” rings.
Not ringing sales, pocketing cash and / or building a
“bank”.
7.
Adding machine or electronic
calculator next to the cash register
Under ringing sales; building bank; using to track the
“bank” build up.)
8.
Tally sheet next to the register
Under ringing an /or not ringing sales; using tally sheet to
track “bank” buildup.
9.
“Poker chips” on change shelf or in
cash drawer.
Under ringing an /or not ringing sales; using “poker chips”
to track “bank” buildup.
10. Messy cash drawer.
Cash theft; creates chaos and confusion for those having to
balance tills.
11. Impulse sale items out of place around
the register.
“Blocking view from Management; possible sliding and /
or cash theft; using impulse sale items to track “bank”
buildup.
12. Early cash check-up.
Cash theft; checking the total cash in the drawer to match
to “bank”.
13. Overage and shortage patterns
If over constantly, cash theft possible; building bank and
leaving a little to make everyone less suspicions.
If short constantly, straight cash theft from till.
14. Sales trend dips.
Cash theft; sliding: Under ringing and / or not ringing
sales.
15. Employee’s purse, cigarette case or
garment in area in which they work.
Cash theft; hiding money.

MERCHANDISE THEFT
ACTION OR CLUE
POSSIBLE THEFT ACTIVITY
1. Wants to carry out trash right
before lunch or right before the
shift ends.
Placing merchandise in trash or placing merchandise
outside to pick up later or for a friend to pick up.
2. Car parked beside or behind the
store or next to dumpster.
Taking merchandise from the store and placing in
waiting car.
3. Employee’s purse or garment in
area in which they work.
Hiding merchandise to take out when leaving for
break or for the day.
4. Excessive damaged merchandise.
If damaged merchandise is sold in store and sold to
employees, could be sign that they are purposely
damaging merchandise to receive discount.
5. Never willing to take a break –
especially with others.
Afraid others will learn of thefts; if others do their
job in their absence, could discover signs of theft.
6. Bag of groceries next to checkout
with no customers around.
Staging merchandise to carry out or have others pick
up.
7. Friends or family of the cashier
going through his/her checkout.
“Hooking-up” or sliding.
