We are continually building on our mission to promote innovation in massage and esthetic therapy education and clinical practice. EZWI is dedicated to prepare clinical massage therapists to become successful practitioners who will provide exemplary health care while demonstrating commitment to lifelong learning and community service. History & Director/Elena Zabala Director Elena Zabala, who is also the founder and CEO of Elena Zabala Wellness Institute has over thirty- two (32) years of experience in the Massage Therapy and Cosmetology industry. She has been trained by many international specialists and has even traveled and trained abroad as well. She has worked with many top names in the industry such as Elizabeth Arden and the Ritz Carlton Spa. She has also received extensive training directly from many top names in the industry in Italy and Canada. Elena Zabala has a vision which has now manifested into reality. In 1992, she had combined her vast experience and training to establish her own spa which has become quite popular and successful in Palm Beach County, Florida; Elena Zabala Skin Care and Wellness Spa. After practicing since 1980, she decided it was time to share her knowledge and techniques which prompted the establishing of Elena Zabala Wellness Institute (2015). Philosophy It is the purpose of Elena Zabala Wellness Institute to train students for a career in Massage Therapy and Esthetics to create a learning environment in which the journey is as valuable as the destination. It is also our aim to prepare students with the abilities needed by providing a comprehensive education for these occupations. In doing so we strive to graduate mindful, creative, knowledgeable professionals who will use their skills and compassion to benefit themselves and those they serve. Elena Zabala Wellness Institute is sensitive to the needs of adult learners and creates a demanding yet supportive environment to enhance the professional, educational, and personal growth of each student. Our institute is easily accessible by public and private transportation. EZWI’s facility offers adequate space which is comprised of approximately 2000 sq. ft. It contains a receptionist and lobby area, three private spa rooms, two training rooms, and is equipped with the latest equipment for both programs which is available on site for a hands on learning experience. Our facility is air conditioned to provide a comfortable learning environment. Our team is always available to assist our students during office hours as stated on page 23. Spanish speaking students will be interviewed upon acceptance into EZWI for an English language assessment Disclosure for Spanish Speaking Students Completing a course or program in a language other than English may reduce employability where English is required. EZWI has both English only classes and Spanish only classes. Registration Registration for consideration for admission into Elena Zabala Wellness Institute is open to all qualified applicants. No individuals will be excluded from enrollment based on age, race, creed, color, religion, gender, disability, marital status, sexual orientation, national origin, veteran status or any other such factor. Applicants who require special accommodations are asked to make arrangements to speak to the Institute Director to discuss their needs. Late Registration Registration will only be permitted for a specified time period. All students must register within this time frame since late registrations are not available. EZWI offers a three month period for registration before the start of each course. Those who miss these registration times may register for the following course start date since we offer courses twice a year. Drop/Add Period Drop and Add Periods are only available during the registration period. Once the course begins, students will not be able to add a program. Those who drop may re-enter within a 180 day period. Transfer Students EZWI is currently not accepting transfer students. Those who wish to attend EZWI must take the entire course. The acceptance of EZWI transfer credit is up to the receiving institution. Page 8 Elena Zabala Wellness Institute - Student Catalog Acceptance by Institution EZWI will provide all interested applicants with a catalog prior to enrollment. We request that those interested review the entire catalog prior to beginning the enrollment process. By completing and signing the enrollment agreement, the applicant is confirming that they have read and fully understand the terms and conditions in order to attend Elena Zabala Wellness Institute. Those who are accepted will be notified in writing of EZWI’s decision within twenty-one (21) days of receipt of the application and all required documents. The catalog and enrollment agreement combined constitute a binding contract between the student and the EZWI. We ask that both are read carefully prior to signing the enrollment agreement. Requirements for Graduation In order to graduate from EZWI’s programs and to receive a diploma, students must successfully complete the required number of scheduled clock hours as specified in the catalog and on the Student Enrollment Agreement. They must pass all written and practical examination with a 85% average, and satisfy all financial obligations to the Institute. Page 9 Elena Zabala Wellness Institute - Student Catalog COURSES/PROGRAMS Programs of Study EZWI offers two programs to choose from; Massage Therapy and Esthetician. Both of our programs offer a complete comprehension of each profession which include theory, clinical lab practice and externship hours. Massage Therapy has a total number of 985 clock hours and the Esthetician course offers 900 hours. Language of Programs/Language Disclaimer Both courses at Elena Zabala Wellness Institute will be taught in both English and Spanish. All of our books for each course are available in these languages. Please be advised that completing a course or program in a language other than English may reduce employability where English is required. Clinical Training The purpose of clinical training is so that the students get a first hand experience of what to expect when they either begin their own practices or work with others. Students who elect the Massage Therapy course will be required to complete 125 hours of lab practicum among the students and 400 hours of externship. Those who have elected the Esthetician Program will be required to complete 245 lab practicum hours and 200 externship hours. Description of Course Numbering System EZWI’s course numbering system is in accordance with the program type and chapter of the books that are used to teach the courses. It also reflects if that section is either theory, lab or externship. For example, the course number “EZMAT01” signifies that the “MA” is for the Massage Therapy Program, the “T” is for theory and the “01” is for chapter one. If there is an associated lab with a chapter, the code would be “EZMALB01”. Externship courses follow the same format as “EZMAEXT01”. Syllabus All students will receive their syllabus for their respective course on the first day of class. The syllabus will be complete with objectives and all required materials if any. Clock Hours Definition A clock hour equals fifty (50) minutes in the presence of an instructor plus appropriate breaks. We offer our students a safe and nurturing environment where they will receive the support that they need for their career development and advancement as well as their journey of personal growth and transformation. Through our training program, Elena Zabala Wellness Institute will teach, inspire and empower its students by providing the best quality education and training for their careers in Massage Therapy. Our students will be educated in both theory and hands on clinical training. Many areas of study will be taught such as the history of therapeutic massage, anatomy, physiology, various modalities, and massage business administration, to name a few. Elena Zabala Wellness Institute offers increased hours in order to ensure that our students have an abundant amount of practical experience for the best possible mastery of their massage technique for a bright future in the Massage Therapy industry. Students have access to his or her academic records upon request. The records will be available within a two-week period from the day requested. There is a non-refundable $10 service fee per transcript. EZWI requires written consent from the student for release of the records to each third-party request, unless otherwise required by law. The school provides and permits access to student and Institute records as required for any accreditation process initiated by the school or by the Commission for Independent Education. Support Services/Academic Advising EZWI is dedicated to assisting our students so that they can achieve their academic and professional goals. We provide support services for our students and are available to advise them on their academic journey. Our Academic Advising services provide our students with information, guidance and access to resources that they may need for a successful academic experience. Support Services/Job Placement Assistance EZWI will provide assistance for job placement by informing the students of possible available positions in their field of study. The institute has not made and will not make any guarantees of employment or salary upon graduation. The Institute will provide placement assistance, which will consist of identifying employment opportunities and advising the students on the appropriate means of attempting to realize these opportunities. Students who graduate with the required minimum grade point average of 85% and demonstrate the adequate abilities to performance in an exceptional manner, will receive a letter of recommendation to include with their resume when seeking employment from the director of EZWI and the students’ instructors. Student Conduct All students are expected to conduct themselves with the utmost responsible, respectful and appropriate behavior at all times while on campus. Family Education Rights and Privacy Act Elena Zabala Wellness Institute complies with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of the 1974 Buckley Amendment, Public Laws 93-380, and Section 428. All students’ records are kept confidential at all times. Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) EZWI maintains compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act by making reasonable accommodation within the scope of compliance with the ADA. Its facilities are configured with restroom equipment for the physically challenged and handicapped parking is available on campus. Page 17 Elena Zabala Wellness Institute - Student Catalog POLICIES Changes Made by Institute Elena Zabala Wellness Institute reserves the right to make changes and addendums as unforeseen situations may arise. Students and applicants will be notified if any such changes occur that would have a direct impact on their course(s). This notification may be via email or mail. If the institute changes or cancels a program or the location of the institute that would negatively affect the student which would cause them not to be able to complete their course(s) of study, the institute will make arrangements in a timely manner to accommodate the student(s)’ needs. If accommodations cannot be made, the institute will refund the student(s)’ tuition. Enrollment/Admission Procedure and Policy Applicants must apply and have complied with the institution’s Enrollment Policy by confirming that they have received and read EZWI’s catalog, completed the Enrollment Application, and attended an interview with the institution’s director. Once accepted, the applicant must successfully passing a background check and make their tuition payment or first payment of their payment plan. Once the student has complied, he/she will receive their start date and be permitted to begin their elected course. Academic Policies and Standards of Progress Students will only receive a grade and Certificate of Completion for the program that he/she has registered. All students are expected to register by the specified registration date of the institute. Withdrawal Policy Registration fees are non-refundable. A student who wishes to withdraw from a course must contact the institute in writing and shall deliver the letter directly to the institute in person or via certified/registered mail prior to leaving. Nonattendance does not reduce or alter the student’s financial obligation if on a payment plan offered by the institute. If a student leaves without notice he/she will be administratively withdrawn and receive an F as their grade once the student has missed 10 consecutive days. Three attempts will be made to notify the student of the administrative withdrawal. Page 18 Elena Zabala Wellness Institute - Student Catalog Refund and Cancellation Policy Should a student’s enrollment be terminated or canceled for any reason, all refunds will be made according to the following refund schedule: 1. Cancellation can be made in person, by electronic mail, by Certified Mail or by termination. 2. All monies will be refunded if the institute does not accept the applicant or if the student cancels within three (3) business days after signing the enrollment agreement and making initial payment. 3. Cancellation after the third (3rd) Business Day, but before the first class, results in a refund of all monies paid, with the exception of the registration fee of $100.00. 4. Cancellation after attendance has begun, but prior to 40% completion of the program, will result in a Pro Rata refund computed on the number of hours completed to the total program hours. 5. Cancellation after completing 40% of the program will result in no refund. 6. Termination Date: In calculating the refund due to a student, the last date of actual attendance by the student is used in the calculation unless earlier written notice is received. 7. Refunds will be made within 30 days of termination of students’ enrollment or receipt of Cancellation Notice from student. Attendance Policy Students are encouraged to attend classes regularly. We ask that students inform the institute of their absence. Tardiness Policy Students must be on time for class. The State of Florida requires students to complete a number of hours in order to graduate. All class time missed must be made up by the student prior to graduation. The total leave of absence period may not exceed 180 days. A request for a leave of absence must be in writing and the date of expected return must be specified. If a student does not return within the specified return date and does not notify the institute, the student’s contract will be terminated on the date listed on the document. Re-Admissions Policy A student that has canceled or has been terminated and desires to return to the program of study must notify the institute and follow the required admission procedures. A student that was terminated for any reason must have an interview with the institute director and show why he/ she should be reinstated. The student must return within 180 days from the last day attended and a reinstatement fee may apply in the amount of $100.00. The institute director has the right to make the final decision. Make Up Work Policy Students who have been absent for any reason are required to make up any missed classes before graduating. A student may make up missed time by attending another class in session. Policies of Transferring Credit from Other Institutions EZWI will not be accepting transfer students at this time. Those interested in attending our institute will be required to complete the entire program. Conditions for Dismissal Policy Students are expected to conduct themselves as responsible adults at all times while on campus. Students must adhere to the Dress Code Policy below. • No torn or bleached style jeans or flip flops • Hair should be well maintained and fashionable • Clothing should reflect a clean and professional appearance • A clean white scrub shirt or vest will be provided for you. Students may change at the institute or take their tops home. Students may wash and dry the scrubs at home. • Pants worn with the EZWI provided top, should be new and clean. Jeans are not permitted. • Students are expected to wear makeup as it benefits their look • Hair and makeup should done before coming to the institute Shoes should be clean, comfortable, closed toe and slip resistant • Hygiene is very important. Massages and Facials require physical work. It is highly important to bathe each day and use deodorant. Classroom/Institute Conduct Policy Please limit all personal calls and texts while at the institute. When it is necessary to make a quick call, please remember that the institute is small and everyone can hear your conversations. Please keep your voice down. Please do not leave a classroom to take a phone call. We understand that emergencies happen. Therefore, use discretion and ask to be excused from the classroom. We prefer that you do not leave campus for lunch. We ask that you bring your lunch since you may only be on campus for a few hours each day. You are representing the institute and yourself so be enthusiastic about you career choice. Drug Free Learning and Working Environment Policy The unlawful possession, use, distribution, dispensation or manufacture of a controlled substance, including both illegal drugs, unauthorized use of alcohol or prescription drugs, are prohibited anywhere on the premises of EZWI. Violations of this policy will result in disciplinary procedures, (suspension, dismissal or termination as applicable) and or criminal prosecution under state and federal laws. Student Complaint /Grievance Policy and Procedure Students who wish to make a complaint/grievance may do so by providing a detailed written letter to the Director Elena Zabala. EZMAEXT14 Massage in the Spa Setting EXTERNSHIP - During the students externship, they will experience first-hand the historical developments of spas, current state of the spa industry, customer demographics and various types of spas, most popular spa services performed by massage therapists, the most important attributes of an effective spa massage, performing a spa exfoliations procedure, performing a spa body wrap procedure and specialized hydrotherapy equipment and other apparatuses used in modern spas. These externships will take place in various locations such as spas, resorts, hospitals, clinics, sport rehabilitation centers and private practices at the discretion of EZWI. EZMAEXT15 Clinical Massage Techniques EXTERNSHIP - Students will implement the following techniques on actual clients as a part of their externship; Neuromuscular Therapy, Trigger Point Therapy, Muscle Energy Techniques, Position Release, and Positional Release Techniques, Myofascial Massage, Deep Tissue Techniques, Craniosacral Therapy and Deep Tissue Massage. EZMAEXT18 Athletics/Sports Massage EXTERNSHIP - Students will implement the following techniques on actual clients as a part of their externship; Athletic Massage, beneficial effects of a Sports massage, technique of Athletic Massage, applications for Athletic Massage, Pre-event Massage, Intra-event Massage, Post-event Massage and the general procedure for a Pre- or Post- event massage. Students will assess and implement massage for athletic injuries, acute injuries, the three types of strains and sprains, massage on acute injuries, chronic injuries, massage on chronic injuries, the aspects of soft tissue injuries, identify contraindications for athletic massage, identify general problem areas and suggest massage applications and the procedure for treating injuries in athletic massage. EZMAEXT20 Massage in Medicine EXTERNSHIP - During this externship, students will experience first-hand; the historical significance of the role massage has played in medicine, how massage re-emerged in the United States as alternative medicine; the difference between alternative, complementary and integrative medicine; the role of massage in integrative medicine, the role of the patient in integrative medicine, complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), how massage might fit into a hospital setting, medical massage, and billing insurance for massage.
