Est. 1990 The Thief River Falls Education Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization Special thanks to Digi-Key for sponsorship of this annual report Thank you so much to all our supporters and volunteers. Annual Report 3 The Thief River Falls Education Foundation has had another successful year. We owe that to the generosity of all our donors and volunteers. When the Education Foundation has a successful year, the students in our schools are the beneficiaries of that success. The generosity of our supporters was demonstrated with the last fund raising event (Dueling Pianos) sponsored by the Education Foundation. Volunteers were plentiful and sponsors were quick to provide financial support. This allowed the event to be a successful fundraiser. In addition, those attending the event had a great time. The Education Foundation has a new Executive Director, Natasha Reierson. Natasha has had previous experience in fundraising and event coordination. Natasha used this experience in her last fund raising event which was very successful. Natasha would like to hear from you. Please call her with any questions or comments that you may have. Natasha has a great personality and an abundance of enthusiasm. The Education Foundation continues to receive great funding requests from the teaching staff. The requests allow better reading opportunities, provide scientific equipment, provide instruments and opportunities for the music department, provide advanced computer use opportunities, and the list goes on. The Education Foundation must continue to grow to fund these requests. To accomplish that, we will continue to need your help. The Education Foundation offices were recently moved when the District Service Center was remodeled. We are now located on the first floor with much better access. Please stop in and visit with Natasha and Karen. You will get a much better picture of what we are all about. As always, we want to thank those who have supported the Education Foundation with time and dollars. Every student receives a better education because of your generosity. Paul Ihle President Annual Report 4 Friends, Last year I said, "My how things have changed" and that is even more apparent this year. All three schools, the District Service Center, and ALC's renovations are completed. Thief River Falls can really be proud of the schools we have for our students. Students continue to learn and flourish with their mini-iPads, iPads, and MacBooks. Good things are happening in our school and we can be proud to be a "Prowler." This is the year we reached and exceeded $2,000,000 for net assets. Our net assets as of June 30, 2014 were $2,502,630. This is after funding over $51,000 of grants and $26,900 of scholarships during our past fiscal year. One of the most enjoyable things the Foundation does is award grants. I'm sure some of you have wondered how we decide what grant applications are funded. A lot of time goes into the approval process. The grant committee reviews all the applications we receive. They take several factors into consideration. After they reach their conclusion they bring it to the board for final approval. Even then there is an opportunity for additional discussion before official approval. This is just another example of how the Foundation is working to help the students in our district. The school district continues to give the students opportunities that aren't available in many other districts. The Foundation is proud to be a part of this success. We are getting our students better prepared for the challenges that await them after they leave LHS. We ARE making a difference! Your past and continued support, both financial and nonfinancial, is very much appreciated. Annual Report 13 Contributions Endowments An endowment is a permanent fund bestowed upon the Thief River Falls Education Foundation to be used for a specific purpose. It could be used for special projects, to underwrite a specific program, or for operations. All of these endowments are funded entirely by the families, individuals, or organizations that have endowed them. Visit the Foundation website at: www.trfeducationfoundation.com for complete information on each individual fund. Alumni Century Endowment Swenson Endowment Fund Gladys Person Memorial Endowment Orin & Marge Green Family Endowment Andy & Mollie Williamson Memorial Endowment Hess Family Endowment Full Stride Fund Prowler Pride Fund Delores & Wallace Torkelson Endowment Mattson Family Endowment Seaverson Endowment William Borry Endowment Joan Magnuson Endowment Endowment funds are easy to establish and they last indefinitely. They can be launched now with current gifts, or created later through a will bequest or other deferred gift. Another possibility is to start an endowment now and add to it later through a bequest. Of course, the advantage of getting an endowment started now is that you can enjoy the experience of seeing your gift at work while you are alive. Education Enhancement Funds This is an opportunity to see your dollars reach many students and have an impact on their educational experiences. Every six months the teachers and staff of School District 564 have an opportunity to request funds through a grant process, to help them with projects, equipment, or resources that will assist them in their own classrooms to better serve our students. You and your loved one can be a part of that opportunity. Bill Borry attributed his success to the Northrop Technical program in Thief River Falls. Bill started the technical program his junior year where he learned the “tools for success!” Bill graduated from the vo-tech in 1952 and then went into the army. Bill served in the Korean War and after leaving the army he went to work for Greyhound in Minneapolis. In 1959, Bill began business as a Shell Station-Owner/Operator. Bill purchased land in Maple Grove, which is now where I-94 is built. Bill was a great friend to everyone he met and held a special place in his heart for Thief River Falls, where it all started. Bill also loved NASCAR and spent the winters in Florida! The endowment gift Bill Borry left to the Thief River Falls Education Foundation will touch and inspire the Technical Programs in the Thief River Falls school district. The funds will be administered by the Thief River Falls Education Foundation. Emil and Joan Magnuson establish the “Joan Magnuson Memorial Endowment.” Joan and Emil express their gratitude to Thief River Fall Education by establishing this endowment. Joan graduated from Lincoln High School in 1951. She then went on to receive her bachelor degree from Concordia College, Moorhead and her master degree from the University of Minnesota. After completing her education, Joan worked for the Hennepin County Welfare department. Joan worked with the state of Minnesota with three internship partnerships in Social work. Joan loved education and helping others.Joan and her husband Emil moved to Andover, MN in 1974. Joan was very involved in church work for Zion Lutheran church in Anoka. She enjoyed quilting and volunteering in her community. Joan was a very strong individual and believed in giving back to community. We are very thankful to have Joan as a Lincoln High School Thief River Falls alumni giving back to education. Morning events included a Trunk-n-Treat downtown, a costume contest, and Business Bingo. Afternoon events were held at the Curling Club with an apple pie contest, inflatable games, covered wagon rides, pumpkin tire toss, pumpkin painting, crafts, music, hay find, and a hay maze. The day ended with a baked potato feed. It was a great success! “Partners In Crime” Murder Mystery Dinner “Partners in Crime” is a professional improv group from the Murder Mystery Café. The performance was held on both Thursday, October 10th and Friday, October 11th. If you were to have come on both nights it would have been the same story line with a completely different show based off of the improv and audience driven plots. The professional actors gave a brief story line along with choosing characters from the audience that were involved in the mystery. The audience guided where the mystery went from there. The mystery dinner was filled with good food, inside community jokes and plots that made even the professionals laugh. Those that attended received a delicious three-course meal with exquisite wine that had been donated for this event. The meal alone was enough to boast about, and then the show began. Annual Report 20 Artist In Residence The GFWC Zehlian Club of Thief River Falls and the Thief River Falls Education Foundation honored the late Margaret Saetre with an “Artist in Residence” project and art show. Lisa Arnold worked with the students twice a week for a month. The students learned about the process of becoming an artist and about the elements of art and the principles of design.
