St. Scholastica Academy Volume 5, December 2008 1903 . 2008 From the Desk of... Mary Kathryn Villere, Principal Place Artwork Here "We believe that the four pillars of the Benedictine tradition (Prayer, Work, Study, Community) offer a meaningful framework of the young women who attend SSA.” SSA Prayer Loving God, Accept our humble offerings of prayer and work this day. St. Scholastica, teach us love. Our Lady of Wisdom, teach us truth. S S A Advent is the beginning of the Church’s liturgical year. It is a time of preparation for Christ’s second coming and for the anniversary of the Lord’s birth. During this time we are prayerfully watching, waiting, and hoping for the peace and joy anticipated by these two events. As we prepare for this season, we might reflect upon the coming of Christ in our personal lives. The Church does us a favor by setting aside a specific time to “wait, watch, and hope.” Most of us would find it hard to structure our lives to carve out that special time to meditate about the extent to which Christ is actually in our lives on a daily basis. Perhaps we could take these four weeks to create small reflective prayer moments to invite Christ to be more active in our lives. We could • Say a prayer when we come to a stop light • Be deliberate about grace before meals and family night prayer A • Read a brief passage in scripture daily • Stop in SSA’s chapel during this season maybe after Tradition we drop off or before we pick up our daughters of • Say a brief prayer each time we pass SSA using the Sisterhood school as a reminder You can certainly come up with your own ideas of incorporating prayer into this season of Advent, probably with more ease of fitting into your busy schedules than even the suggestions listed above. The idea is to take a few moments to reflect upon the possibilities and then might I suggest that you write it down and put it somewhere where you might see it every day. We tend to stay accountable to ourselves if we write plans down and look at them. My prayer for you and your family is that you find individual time to “wait, watch, and be hopeful” for our savior’s coming and that you carve some special family prayer time, maybe starting a new tradition, to prepare for this most special Christmas season. “I am the voice of one crying out in the desert; make straight the way of the Lord.” (Isaiah) Mary Kathryn Villere P.O. Celestin “This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad.” With these words we began the joyous, glorious celebration marking the Dedication of our new chapel. The solemn celebration began with Archbishop Hughes blessing the altar and the crucifix, the walls and the people with incense and holy water. The Archbishop, along with Abbot Justin Brown and Father Matthew Clark from St. Joseph Abbey, Father Neal McDermott, Archdiocesan Vicar of Christian Formation, and Father John Talamo, pastor of Our Lady of the Lake, presided over the Eucharist to be celebrated for the first time in the chapel. SSA’s outstanding choir, under the talented direction of Sharon Scharmer, provided magnificent music befitting this grand occasion. Congratulatory remarks were shared by the Archbishop, Sister Kathleen Finnerty, O.S.U. (Superintendent of Catholic Schools) and Sister Jeanne d’Arc, O.S.B. (last Benedictine Sister to serve as Principal at SSA). A host of guests attended including representatives from the Archdiocese, students, faculty, alumnae, parents, parents of alumnae as well as numerous friends of the Academy. The presence of a real chapel is a true blessing, one which will bring many graces to our SSA family. What a blessing to have a consecrated, sacred space on campus for our SSA family to pray, worship, and meditate in order to establish a personal spirituality and relationship with God. I invite you to stop by the chapel for prayer at any time that you are in the vicinity (and can find a parking spot!) The chapel will be open during school hours. It will not be open on weekends or vacation days. The chapel, which will hold about 180 people, will be used for class level Masses, Adoration, Communion services, prayer services, rosaries, and individual meditation. All of our students who have Religion class this term have already attended Mass in the chapel. The remaining students will have Mass there in January. Because of the size of the chapel our “all-school” Masses will still be held in the gym. The chapel will also be available for alumnae weddings. Two weddings will be held in the chapel during December. We are proud that the chapel contains some connections to the original chapel. Hanging in the upper tier of windows are four restored stained glass pieces depicting Benedictine and other Saints. We are grateful to have received these pieces from St. Benedict Parish to be returned to their “original home.” Suspended from the entrance gate to the chapel is the same bell that hung in the tower atop SSA’s original four-story wooden building in 1903. The stained glass and the bell, along with the grotto, now remain on campus as the last original symbols of SSA’s early history. Some of the interior appointments were not ready at the time of Dedication and will be installed later. They include the permanent tabernacle, font, presider’s chair and the icons of Our Mother of Perpetual Help, Visitation , and Holy Family. The outdoor prayer garden which will hold the Stations of the Cross will also be completed in the near future. Many thoughts of gratitude fill my heart at this time. I thank those of you who have generously supported this project through your contributions and your prayers. We are deeply grateful for your belief and commitment which has made this dream a reality. To those who worked so hard to make the Dedication event a most memorable occasion I thank you. To the architect, contractors, workers, artists: you have created a most remarkable sacred place. May God bless the work of your hands which you have used to give Him Glory. May Mary, Our Mother of Perpetual Help, be our refuge and our hope. Strengthen us as we bear our burdens and help us to follow the example of your Son. May our daily lives proclaim the love of Jesus and be a witness to the Gospel. At Christmas we celebrate the gift of life and birth. As we begin the New Year let us do so with a renewed spirit of rebirth and hope. You will all be remembered in our prayers in a special way during this Christmas season. May God’s love fill your hearts with peace, joy, and happiness.
