March 2007 Issue No. 10 Commonwealth Day Celebrations at CMS, Gomtinagar Message from the Commonwealth Secretary-General, Rt. Hon. Don McKinnon CMS, Gomtinagar is organising Commonwealth Youth Conference and Postermaking Competition on 17 March 2007 at CMS Gomtinagar auditorium. The chief guest will be Mr Ram Bodh, UNESCO Representative. The topic for this year's Commonwealth Day is "The Commonwealth — Respecting difference & promoting understanding". Competitions will be held in junior and senior categories. The Queen of England, Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth is the Head of the Commonwealth. The Commonwealth is a large slice of this world of ours. We are 53 nations and 1.8 billion people. We are African, Asian, Caribbean, European and Pacific. Home to the richest and poorest and those of every colour and creed - an association of equals sharing the fundamental beliefs of democracy and freedom. We celebrate diversity, respect difference and promote understanding - between faiths, ethnic groups and communities - at every level: local, regional, national and international. We try to understand the many causes of tension and marginalization - from poverty to identity to differences in cultural practices and political beliefs. Tensions can of course be found in the Commonwealth and there are certainly enough in the wider world for us to say that respecting diversity and the views and rights of others isn't always easy. But so, too, are there Commonwealth successes in the struggle against racism or intolerance - enough ways in which people have been brought together - first to know and to live with each other in harmony - to show that it can be done. It's the work of governments, of civil society and above all of individuals. We set special store by education and the positive values that people learn at school and throughout their lives. So, too, we set special store in hearing the voices of young people - the guardians of the future. In Malta in November 2005, our Heads of Government met and committed to bringing this Commonwealth experience to bear both within the Commonwealth and outside it. They set out to look again at the causes of tension and misunderstanding in society and to bring together all our best practices from around the world that have succeeded in resolving them. The aim is to share that information. The goal is to make the Commonwealth and the world we inhabit a better place for all. The work is happening right now and will be complete by the time Commonwealth Heads of Government next meet in Uganda in November 2007. We start from what we have already agreed - our shared values of human rights, liberty, democracy, equality, the rule of law and a political culture that promotes transparency, accountability and economic development. We go further and apply it in people's lives. See http://www.cmseducation.org CMS BULLETIN - GUIDANCE AND FM SCHEDULE MARCH 2007 (2) Educationwatch English daily 'Pioneer' carries a weekly column titled 'Educationwatch/Jagdish Gandhi' every Sunday on the apostle of World Unity and Founder Manager of CMS, Mr Jagdish Gandhi's talks. Printed below is a clipping from the Pioneer dated February Education intrinsic to character development Education is one of the most important factors in the evolution of humanity, the other more influential one being religion. I believe that today religious zeal and education should come together and work hand in hand. Only together they can constitute a single unifying, inspirational, guiding force for coordinating human thought and expression within a traditionally accepted pattern. Education serves what is in reality its most basic purpose, the training of character. Education not only changes the character of an individual or society as whole, which are all different from one another, but assists them (read individual and society) to develop to their utmost capacity. I acknowledge that education has a great effect upon the human race; we see that children of the same age, nativity and from the same household, under the guidance of one teacher, differ in their minds and comprehensions. Training and education not only change the human substance but produce a marvellous effect. By the effective power of education the virtues and capacities of the human reality can be revealed. I believe that every nation should aim to build up a spiritually regenerate humanity, and to establish a functionally united world. To achieve these education is intrinsic. I give prominence to education in delineating the structure of the future world. It is chiefly through educative influences that we must build up in ideology and loyalty consecrated to the goal of world peace. Only through, education of youth and adult can the adverse and chaotic elements of society be guided. "Man is supreme. Lack of proper education has, however, deprived him of that which he inherently possess." We must promote world, by every means within our power, the material as well as spiritual enlightenment of the youth. The means for the education of children, to provide the best means for their progress and development, is incumbent upon the world of mankind. It becomes not only progress towards world unity but the brightest outlook for the future generations of children. They shall possess a common knowledge of all things, illiteracy shall disappear, moral and spiritual worthiness strengthened, and oneness achieved through the education of all. For teachers, parents and all concerned with public life, moral education is an indispensable part of children's education. The systematic development of a moral education programme must be regarded as central to the building of a progressive society and a sense of true identify among its future citizens. I believe that the development of moral character constitutes the essential foundation of a true education. "Good behaviour and high moral character must come first for unless the character is trained acquiring knowledge will only prove injurious. Knowledge is praiseworthy when it is coupled with ethical conduct and a virtuous character, otherwise it is a deadly poison, a frightful danger." Thus, beyond the belief in the importance of providing children with a relevant and excellent academic education, it is my view that education must also cast a transforming influence upon the character of the individual so that intellectual learning is of genuine benefit to the individual and society. I believe that moral capabilities cannot be developed in a secular framework of education. An indispensable requisite for developing these capabilities is to establish a connection between the human heart and God, thus enabling the individual to manifest the spiritual qualities with which the human soul has been endowed, such as justice generosity, love, compassion and truthfulness. The teachings of the religions of the world are the depositories of truths that assist every human being in establishing a relationship with God and developing these qualities. Children need praise and positive reinforcement from their elders, whether they are parents, teachers, caregivers, friends, and even older siblings. Approval is so very important to a child. Truth resides in every human heart, and one has to search for it there, and to be guided by truth as one sees it. But no one has a right to coerce others to act according to his own view of truth. —M. K. Gandhi CMS BULLETIN - CREATIVE SECTION - SENIOR AND JUNIOR MARCH 2007 (7) Creative Writing A cry for peace Oh! Another bomb! This one was much nearer! Uh! Of these bomb sounds I’m getting wearer and wearer! Why don’t they kill us in one go?!! Why do they have to take it really really slow?!! You must have realized what is happening Why there are no people tending their lawns! Why there are no drivers honking their horns! Why there are no people walking on the streets! Why there are no children buying sticks of sweets! Yes, you have realized it right! This is starting of World War III Just because few terrorists wanted to set Kashmir free! All have taken it as a matter of pride And nations have already started taking sides Soon will begin a World War III, Which will cause the end of all prosperity. Now millions of innocent people will die Even then no one will stop to wonder WHY These people do not value others’ lives anymore, All I can say is that they are rotten to the core! Now I must stop Because I am burnt completely and my dress is still on fire, And now the roof has fallen and my hand is pierced by a wire. But I would like to say this before dying, ‘Foresee the consequences of war and avoid its presence, Because on the door of death, pride has very less importance.’ Prerna Garg, VI H Gomtinagar My shadow I have a little shadow that goes in and out with me, And what can be the use of him is more than I can see, He his very-very like me from the heels up to the head; And I see him jump before me, when I jump into my bed. The funniest thing about him is the way he likes to grow, Not at all like proper children, which is always very slow; For sometimes he shoots up taller as like India rubber ball, And sometimes gets so little that there is none of him at all. I rose up very early in the morning and found the shining dew on every buttercup; But my lazy little shadow, like an arrogant sleepy head, Had stayed at home behind me and was fast asleep in bed. Manisha, VI B Anand Nagar Discipline Discipline is the need of the hour in every walk of life. Everything from sunshine to sunset, change of seasons, rotation of the earth, days and nights follow a disciplined cycle of rotation. Discipline teaches us to follow the set rules of a particular institution. It leads us to co-operate with a spirit of love for each other. Discipline should be voluntary. Discipline is the secret of one’s success. A nation becomes great if its citizens become disciplined. Ramsha Ahrar, VII Jopling Road I need someone... I need someone as my friend, I need some one to make my sorrows come to an end. I need someone to share my joys, I need someone to play with my toys. I need someone who is alive, To be there with me whole of my life. I do not need one who makes a blunder, But I really need one whose sweet stories make me slumber. Garima Singh, XI 5 Mahanagar III HEALTH COLUMN Are you taking your vitamins? The story of my birth is very interesting. I had to pass through different processes before I came to my present form. In fact, I come into existence by the mixture of different parts of the trees and purified. Gradually, after passing through different machines, I acquired my original shape, I remained there with so many of my brothers and sisters. After that I was put under the printing press and various important news of the warld were printed on me. This is the point where my actual life began. Lot of people are involved in preparing me. There is a reporter who brings news to be printed on me and editor who edits the news, a designer who designs my front page to make me look attractive and a sum of Rs.3 is fixed as my cost. There are other lots of people also who take One for sorrow, one for joy Mansi, a little girl, got out of the bed after a great effort and came on the terrace. She opened her eyes and found a sparrow meaning ‘one for sorrow’ on the water tank. It was a chill winter morning. The time was 8 o’clock. She rushed into the bathroom as she had to reach the school by 8.30 am. She cycled fast and somehow reached the school. The prayer bell rang. “Hurry up, form a line,” the teacher shouted. “Good morning, teacher,” Mansi said. “Mansi, have you seen yourself in the mirror before coming to school?” the teacher asked. “Is something wrong, teacher?” Mansi asked in surprise. “How come you have worn pink ribbons?” asked the teacher. “Pink ribbons!”, she got scared. She would be punished; she would be insulted as she was the only girl with pink ribbons. All these thoughts flashed in her mind as she stood outside the class, punished to stand there alone for the entire first period. “Ouch!” Self-confidence Vitamin A - INFECTION FIGHTER, SKIN PROTECTOR - The carrot has an abundant supply of this vitamin. Eating carrots regularly with meals will build up your resistance to disease; make your eyesight sharper and your skin glow. Keep your spectacles away by chewing carrots. B — Complex - THE ENERGY TEAM - These are a cluster of related vitamins that work together for a common purpose just like a football team. They produce the energy from the food you eat to play, run, walk and jump. The Wheat grain is super rich in B complex. Make sure, you eat whole wheat Rotis (Atta not Maida), since most of this compound is present in the outer layer of the grain. Vitamin C - THE GROWTH AND PROTECTOR VITAMIN - It is needed by all the body tissues since it is essential for normal growth. The Lemon is the best source of this vitamin. Eating or drinking lemon juice would help you heal wounds and also protect you from colds and coughs. Children getting ample vitamin C have stronger bodies. Vitamin U - THE DIGESTIVE HELPER - You need to have a healthy stomach to absorb whatever you eat. Vitamin U is present in Cabbage. Eating grated cabbage with meals increases your digestion capacity and keeps your body clean of all waste. Are you hurt?” her friend who had pushed her by mistake, asked. “Let us take her to the class.” She was made to sit. “One for sorrow!”, the bird sitting on the water tank again flashed before her eyes. “Who is Mansi?” the peon asked. “Why?” Mansi asked. “Principal Ma’am is calling you.” Hearing this, she felt like crying. She dusted herself, crossed her fingers and thought that she would get a scolding. “May I come in Ma’am?” “Oh Mansi! come in my child. I have a good news for you. You are selected to go to Hong Kong for the Maths Olympiad,” said the Principal. Mansi could not react as she was so happy. When she went home, she smiled and thought that it was actually ‘One for joy!’. It was her fault, so she was punished. Her friend pushed, so she fell down and it was her hard work that changed her belief. Ishita Prakash, VII 3 Mahanagar III It is not what you are born with, But it is what we have to live with; It may sometimes appear as a pride But it is a topic of importance, not to be set aside; When you have lost all hope, It is this, which helps you cope; When you may feel discouraged, It is only this, which gives you extraordinary courage; You may have a large circle of friends. On the kind of trends; But when you go round life’s different bends, It is only this to which you will tend; And to life’s Zenith you will be sent, This is what one can count on; It is the self-confidence which I rely on.
