The 40th Annual Commencement September 22, 2012 2:00 p.m. Sun National Bank Center Trenton, New Jersey Tradition of Excellence: A Thomas Edison State College Thomas Edison State College, one of America’s preeminent educational institutions, provides flexible, high-quality, collegiate learning opportunities for self-directed adults. Cited as “one of the brighter stars of higher learning” by The New York Times and one of the top 20 colleges and universities in the nation in the use of technology to create learning opportunities for adults by Forbes magazine, Thomas Edison State College enables adults to build on their past achievements as a bridge to their future success. The College offers the highest quality education to adults who have the inspiration, self-discipline and energy to complete a college degree despite the many conflicting demands of career, family and community. Founded in 1972, this world-renowned institution offers associate, bachelor’s and master’s degrees in more than 100 areas of study. Thomas Edison State College provides adults from every state in the United States and more than 70 countries throughout the world with a wide variety of ways to complete a quality degree. Thomas Edison State College pioneered the award of college credit for knowledge obtained in noncollegiate environments through its Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) programs; lead in the development of taking college courses at a distance through the use of technology and is one of the nation’s leading providers of worldwide education for the members of the United States military. As an innovation leader in higher education, it is developing new programs utilizing multiple mobile learning devices and 21st century assessment methods. The College, its leadership and programs are a tribute to its illustrious history. The College’s Kelsey Building is recognized as one of the most important visual landmarks of the Trenton, N.J., State House Historic District, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Originally built by Henry Cooper Kelsey, a banker and politician with an appreciation for the arts, the Kelsey Building is a memorial to his wife, Prudence Townsend Kelsey, who died in 1904. The building was dedicated in 1911 as the School for Industrial Arts. In 1979, when Thomas Edison State College was looking to move from office space it had outgrown in the Forrestal Center outside of Princeton, N.J., the state was looking for an appropriate tenant for the landmark Kelsey Building, while the city sought to preserve the building’s historic use as a school. All three concerns were brought together when state Senate President Joseph P. Merlino persuaded Gov. Brendan T. Byrne that, along with five adjoining townhouses, the Kelsey Building was ideal for College expansion. Today, Thomas Edison State College’s presence has expanded throughout the capital city. The College’s campus comprises the Kelsey Building at 101 W. State St., and the five restored 19th-century townhouses adjacent to the Kelsey Building; the Academic Center at 167 W. Hanover St.; the Kuser Mansion (home of The John S. Watson Institute for Public Policy) at 315 W. State St.; and the newest addition, the Canal Banks Building at 221 W. Hanover St. Thomas Edison State College, however, is not contained by bricks and mortar. The College’s reach is felt by all those who strive to create a better future for themselves and for their communities. In the true spirit of inspiration and innovation, Thomas Edison State College will continue to reinvent the future of higher education. The 40th Annual Commencement William J. The college or university commencement procession today is a pageant, alive and bright with dress and ceremony derived from the tradition of the oldest universities. Academic life as we know it today began in the Middle Ages — in Bologna and Paris, Oxford and Cambridge, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Louvain — first in the church, then in the guilds. The teaching guild was the Guild of the Master of Arts, where the bachelor was the apprentice of the master, and the dress was color-coded and patterned according to the academic level and discipline. In the hierarchy of the academic world, the associate’s degree is the modern entry point. Its equivalent in the guild of teachers was that of a junior apprentice. Twelfth-century records of Oxford University state this justification for academic dress: “It is honorable and in accordance with reason that clerks to whom God has given an advantage of the lay folk in their adornments within, should likewise differ from the lay folk outwardly in dress.” There are three principal features of academic dress: the gown, the cap and the hood. Their design and heraldry were, from as early as the eleventh and twelfth centuries in the great European universities, the outward sign of the bringing together of students and privileged persons under the same discipline. To preserve their dignity and meaning, it early became necessary for these universities to set rules for academic dress. American universities agreed on a system in 1895 and set up a suitable code of academic dress for the colleges and universities of the United States. In 1932, and again in 1959, the American Council on Education revised the code that, for the most part, governs the style of academic dress today. THE GOWN. The flowing gown comes from the twelfth century. Many think it was worn in olden times as protection against the cold of unheated buildings. It has become symbolic of the democracy of scholarship, for it completely covers any dress of rank or social standing. The associate’s degree gown is grey. The gown is black for all degrees above the associate’s, with pointed sleeves for the bachelor’s degree; oblong sleeves for the master’s degree; and bell-shaped sleeves for the doctor’s degree. For the bachelor’s and master’s degree, the gown has no trimmings. For the doctor’s degree, it is faced down the front with velvet and has three bars of velvet across the sleeves in the color distinctive of the faculty or discipline to which the degree pertains. More recently, the official colors of Thomas Edison State College, burgundy and cream, have been used in the gown and its decorations. 45 THE CAP. When Roman law freed a slave, he won the privilege of wearing a cap. Thus, the academic cap is a sign of freedom of scholarship and the responsibility and dignity with which scholarship endows the wearer. Old poetry records the cap of scholarship as square to symbolize the book, although some authorities claim that the mortar board is the symbol of the masons, a privileged guild. The color of the tassel on the cap denotes the discipline. The associate’s cap is grey. Caps for master’s and doctor’s degrees are often black, but may appear in other colors, as well, depending on the rest of the regalia. THE HOOD. Almost all of the students and faculty in the medieval universities were clerics (minor church ecclesiastics) and were tonsured (i.e., had shaved heads), and the hood served to cover the shaved head from the cold of unheated buildings. Eventually, the hood was superseded by the skull cap and evolved into a headdress more or less like those in use today. Heraldically, the hood is an inverted shield with one or more chevrons of a secondary color on the ground of the primary color of the college. The color of the facing of the hood denotes the discipline represented by the degree; the color of the lining of the hood designates the college or university from which the degree was granted. THE MACE. The mace — a heavy staff or club fashioned entirely of metal with a metal head — was originally a weapon of war. In the sixteenth century, it became a ceremonial standard and a scepter of office. It resembled the original weapon and was carried before officials at ceremonial occasions. A mace is still in use in the British House of Commons, where it lies upon the table before the speaker as a symbol of the authority of the House. The mace of Thomas Edison State College was designed by the College and was inaugurated as the scepter of office at the October 1990 Commencement ceremony. It is a solid maple scepter with a two-sided medallion mounted to the head by a brass collar. There are three brass bands on the shaft, upon which the names of the College’s three presidents and their terms are inscribed as follows: James Douglas Brown Jr., 1972-1978; Larraine Rose Matusak, 1979-1982; and George A. Pruitt, 1982-present. The mace shaft and base are finished in mahogany. Carried in the procession by the president of the Academic Council, the mace symbolizes the authority of the Office of the President. 46 Thomas Edison State College Board of Trustees Eric Robert Lear, Chairperson Gualberto (Gil) Medina, Vice Chairperson Fred J. Throughout her career, she has developed many mental health clinical programs and has received grants to support mental health projects and programs. As Dean, Dr. O’Brien transformed the College’s W. Cary Edwards School of Nursing from the examination-based RN-to-BSN degree program that was started in 1983 to an online format in 2001 and then to the RN-to-BSN/MSN degree that we have known since 2006. All of these transformations have resulted in better service to experienced RNs who are seeking college degrees. During these transformative years, the School has maintained full accreditation status with the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC), and, in the fall of 2008, it received initial accreditation for the RN-to-MSN program through the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In 2005, the W. Cary Edwards School of Nursing established the Honor Society of Nursing, which was chartered as Upsilon Rho of Sigma Theta Tau International, of which Dr. O’Brien is a member. Also in 2005, the School was awarded a Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) grant to educate minority nurses in online education and to develop a database of minority educators to be shared among schools of nursing across the United States. Due to the success of this innovative program, the grant was refunded in 2008 for another three years. Dr. O’Brien received the 2008 C.A.R.E.S. Award for Excellence in Education, which was given by the New Jersey State Nurses Association. The award recognizes individuals who have demonstrated excellence in the development and implementation of sound and creative educational programming for nurses. Dr. O’Brien also received the Diva Award for Significant Contributions to Nursing Education at the Diva and Don Gala in 2010. In 2011, Dr. O’Brien worked on the development of a Patient Simulation Laboratory, the first of its kind in the Trenton area, and assisted with obtaining grants of approximately $220,000 to support the Patient Simulation Laboratory. In July of 2012, Dr. O’Brien resigned as the Dean of the W. Cary Edwards School of Nursing and assumed a new role as the Associate Provost for Special Projects. Dr. O’Brien holds a Doctor of Education degree in Health Education from Temple University in Philadelphia; a Master of Science in Psychiatric Nursing and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia; and an RN Diploma from Roger Williams General Hospital School of Nursing in Providence, R.I. 53 Distinguished Service Award Norma Blake, MLS New Jersey State Librarian Emerita Ms. Norma E. Blake has been the New Jersey State Librarian for 10 years, which brings her experience in New Jersey libraries to more than 37 years, including the directorship of both the Burlington County and Gloucester County Library Systems. She was selected as the New Jersey Library Association’s Librarian of the Year, elected President of NJLA, chosen as a member of Leadership NJ Class of 2000 and received the Distinguished Service Award 2005 from NJLA-CUS ACRL-NJ. Ms. Blake was selected by Library Journal (LJ) as the 2008 Librarian of the Year. As stated in LJ on Jan. 15, 2008, “rarely has the magazine been blitzed with as much impressive evidence of the contribution of one librarian to innovation that converts formerly skeptical citizens, politicians and other public servants to the view that strong libraries are central to the future of the state.” During her tenure at the State Library, Ms. Blake has led libraries through the development of innovative programs that serve as national models and by convening conferences to help libraries prepare for their future roles. She has initiated many new statewide projects that bring information to people when and where they need it. Under her leadership, the New Jersey Knowledge Initiative won the Innovation award from the National Council of State Governments for helping New Jersey’s economy by providing specialized databases for small businesses, researchers, students and teachers. Numerous grants have been awarded including two Institute of Museum and Library Services federal grants for librarian recruitment, a federal grant for developing the New Jersey Digital Highway, Live Homework Help and Gates Foundation grants for computer security, hardware and broadband. Ms. Blake has taken a leadership role in creating New Jersey’s first statewide marketing campaign for libraries; implementing a highly successful interlibrary loan system; developing New Jersey’s first Web portal and virtual reference services providing access to statewide resources; providing statewide Internet access for libraries through JerseyConnect; and expanding popular statewide programs such as the Statewide Summer Reading Program for children and teens; and establishing trustee and new director training programs. She has also encouraged the implementation of new programs and services for the blind, deaf and hard of hearing at the New Jersey State Library’s Talking Book and Braille Center. Ms. Blake’s vision propels libraries forward and challenges them to create the programs, products and services that will meet the needs of everyone in their communities. Ms. Blake presently serves on New Jersey Network’s Citizens Advisory Board; the Board of the Southern New Jersey Development Council; SCALES, the State Council of Adult Literacy Education Services; and the Lincoln Bicentennial Commission. Her professional organizations/affiliations include the New Jersey Library Association; the American Library Association; the Urban Libraries Council for COSLA; the Chief Officers of State Library Agencies; Chief Officers of State Library Agencies in the Northeast; and the Association of Specialized and Cooperative Library Agencies. 54 Honorary Degree Recipient Robert E. Whose broad stripes and bright stars thru the perilous fight, O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming? And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there. Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave? 58 Thomas Edison State College ~ Alma Mater Music by Gerri Collins and Roy Meriwether Here’s to our chal-lenge of our know - ledge.
