Descendants of Mexican settlers get access to

Letter to the Editor
FLOC VICTORY: Farmer Jack cleans its shelves
of Mt. Olive Pickles nationwide
FLOC’s action on December 10th, International Human
Rights Day, has forced Farmer Jack to clean its shelves of all
Mt. Olive Company Pickle products in all its over 100 stores
nationwide. UFCW Local 911 in Toledo, which represents
Farmer Jack workers, was also instrumental in the decision taken by the grocery chain.
FLOC has been running a national boycott of Mt. Olive Pickle products since the
company, based in North Carolina, refuses to recognize its responsibility over the farm
workers who pick its cucumbers and the right of the workers to form a union.
In the fields of North Carolina, farm workers are exploited to the point of their death.
No breaks, no water, no rights. In 2001 Urbano Ramírez died from heat stroke while picking
cucumbers for the Mt. Olive Corporation.
Mt. Olive Pickles have blood on them! Help farm workers organize by supporting the
boycott. If you can help, please call us at FLOC (419) 243-3456.
Thank you to all the members & supporters who showed up today at the Farmer Jack
store in spite of the heavy rain!
The people, united, will never be defeated!
¡El pueblo, unido, jamas sera vencido!
¡Hasta la Victoria!
Sincerely,

DENVER (AP), Dec. 11:
Descendants of Mexican
settlers who were promised
they could use the land that
now is the Taylor Ranch for
grazing cattle and gathering firewood are celebrating a court decision that restores to them that right.
The U.S. Supreme Court
refused to hear an appeal of
a state high court decision
that concluded the settlers’
descendants could use the
77,500 acres of the San Luis
Valley ranch.
“They never thought
they could get it back, but
we’ve won,” Shirley Romero
Otero, a descendant of settlers, said Wednesday. “Now
I see people with hope and
lots of pride.”
Jeff Goldstein, a lawyer
representing the descendants, said, “It’s really a vindication of their rights.
They’ve been saying this
for over 40 years.”
Stephen Kinnaird, a Washington lawyer involved in
the Supreme Court case representing the ranch owners,
declined comment. The limited partnership that owns
the property includes former
Enron executive Lou Pai.
The 14,047-foot Culebra
Peak and surrounding ranch
land, about 180 miles south
of Denver, became a part of the
United States in 1848 after the
Mexican-American war. Residents used it for hunting, grazing and gathering wood to
build and heat their adobe
homes.
The battle, which the state
court said recalled a tale that
could be found in a Dickens
novel, began in 1960 after
North Carolina timberman
Jack Taylor bought the land,
including the mountain.
Taylor erected a fence and
ordered that trespassers be shot.
There were frequent reports of
tensions and beatings between
the ranch and the valley residents.
With the Supreme Court
challenge scuttled, the descendants and the current
owners must agree on a management plan for the property,
as ordered by the state court,
before access is allowed.
They must also trace property titles back to when the
settlers first arrived under a
land grant from México since
only current property holders
who are descendants have access rights. The state court ordered that the ranch owners
pay for that work.
Otero, 48, remembers joining her family and neighbors
on a summer trek to the land to
gather enough wood for the
winter for them and the elderly
who couldn’t make the trip. It
wasn’t just a chore, she recalls, but a big social event
where the children would
play and everyone would
picnic together.
She was 5 when she last
saw the ranch and, growing
up, she saw many people
forced to move to pursue
work in big cities like Albuquerque, N.M., and Denver
after being cut off from a way
to support their families by
grazing their cattle. She
moved to Grand Junction
and became a teacher but
joined the legal battle in
1981.
She said the next big
hurdle would be teaching
the importance of conserving the land. She thinks
many who left, especially
retirees, will return to help
rebuild that culture. That,
and providing the valley’s
young people a chance to
learn about biology and forestry, could prevent some
from leaving the valley
when they grow up, she said.
“I just want to go up there,
at my age, and enjoy the
spirituality of the mountain,
the beautiful surroundings
and the peace and tranquility that it will bring to me,”
Otero said.
“And soon we’ll be able
to do it legally without fear
of being beaten or getting a
trespassing ticket.”

CA Latino advocacy groups
hold one-day boycott
Tens of thousands Latino
Californians participated
last Friday, in a statewide
boycott.
Latino organizers, angered by the repeal of a law
allowing undocumented
immigrants to apply for
driver’s licenses, kicked off
a statewide boycott of businesses, schools, and radio
stations with a rally at a
historic Mexican-style
plaza.
Advocates planned the
one-day boycott in response to the legislature’s
action last week and as
part of an effort to highlight the economic contribution of California’s
Latino community, the
nation’s largest.
“Our people are waking
up to their economic
power,” said Nativo López,
president of the Mexican
American Political Association, one of the organizers
of the boycott.
“This is a call to people
not to go to work, not to go
to school, not to shop in
stores, basically to withhold their individual and
family economy from the
economy of California,”
López told the crowd at the
downtown Rivera plaza
near Olvera Street on
Thursday.
At 11.9 million, Latinos
make up about a third of
the state’s population.
During the rally,
Lynwood High School
junior Pricilla Olguin
urged students not to attend classes Friday. She
said the issue of driver’s
licenses affects children
because some students
can’t get to school if their
parents can’t drive.
Eastman Elementary
School teacher Fernando
Ledezma, who attended
the rally, said he planned
to stay home Friday.
The license law was
passed by the legislature
in September and signed
by then-Gov. Gray Davis,
fueling criticism he was
pandering to Latino voters.
Fulfilling a major campaign promise, Gov.
Arnold Schwarzenegger
signed legislation repealing the law last week. He
has said he wants a “whole
new package” that includes more safeguards
and background checks on
applicants.

FDA, México disagree on
source of tainted green onions
PITTSBURGH (AP), Dec.
10: The Food and Drug Administration reaffirmed green
onions as the cause of a recent
hepatitis outbreak on Tuesday,
a day after a Mexican official
claimed there was no evidence
the outbreak could have been
caused by growers there.
The FDA said green onions have been found to be the
cause in outbreaks in Tennessee, North Carolina and Georgia in September and in Pennsylvania in late October
through early November. The
most recent outbreak sickened
more than 630 people and
killed three.
During a briefing Monday,
Mexican officials said they
have found nothing to indicate the contamination happened in their country.
“It is impossible to conclude that the outbreak can be
traced to Mexican farms,” Juan
Pablo Hernández Díaz,
México’s secretary of agriculture in Baja California, told
the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review after the briefing. “The
evidence we have doesn’t
necessarily tell us that the problem originated here.”
Investigators from the FDA
and Centers for Disease Control spent the first week of December in México visiting four
green onion growers. They
found, among other things, that
the onions would have been
harvested from July through
September, depending on
where they were shipped; none
of the growers were harvesting
or handling green onions when
the investigators were present;
no one grower’s onions are
common to all of the outbreaks;
and all four farms has poor
sanitation and inadequate hand
washing facilities, which may
have contributed to the contamination.
The CDC has said the contamination could have occurred in many ways, including poor hygiene by infected
workers at any stage of the
onions’ transit from field to
the restaurant.
Green onion farmers in
México were pleased, but cautious, about the announcement from their government.
“This is great news, but the
FDA has the final word,” said
Fernando Beltran Quijada,
owner of Tecno Agro in the
town of San Luis Rio Colorado.
Hernández Díaz said the
contamination could have
happened in the United States.
He said most of the green onions grown in northwestern
Mexican are shipped to the
western United States and not
to Pennsylvania.
“You have some boxes of
green onions that are re-iced
in the U.S.,” he said. “How do
they know they weren’t contaminated at that point?”
Last week, Javier Trujillo,
undersecretary for food safety
and quality in México’s Ministry of Agriculture, said Dos
M Sales de México, a company located near the border
city of Mexicali, in Baja California state, was washing its
scallions with water from a
nearby reservoir, rather than
with purified drinking water,
as required. However, it’s still
not known if that caused the
contamination.

Gobernador mexicano dice
no hallaron hepatitis en Baja
México, también acusó a la
California
agentes estadounidenses no
hicieron declaraciones.
Martínez dijo que
algunos productores podrían
iniciar juicio al gobierno
estadounidense por los
daños que les ha causado la
caída en las ventas de
cebollín desde que se
anunciaron las sospechas.
• México indignado con
la FDA por insinuación
de hepatitis en EEUU
PITTSBURGH (AP): Un
importante
funcionario
mexicano denunció que las
autoridades de salud
estadounidensesestánacusando
precipitadamente a un
restaurante mexicano en
Pensilvaniaporunbrotedehepatitis A que contagió al menos a
635 personas y mató a tres.
Javier Trujillo, director
de un departamento de la
Secretaría de Agricultura de
y Medicamentos de Estados
Unidos (FDA en sus siglas en
inglés) de no averiguar
correctamente los orígenes de
la comida que se servía en el
restaurante Chi-Chi’s.
La FDA vinculó unos
cebollines mexicanos al brote
de hepatitis. Trujillo dijo que
la agencia acusó a unas
compañías mexicanas luego
de que funcionarios
mexicanos le informaron, el
21 de noviembre, a
f u n c i o n a r i o s
estadounidenses que esas
compañías habían incurrido
en “irregularidades en sus
prácticas agrícolas y de
procesamiento”.
No
obstante,
los
funcionarios mexicanos
señalaron que ninguna de esas
fallas estaban vinculadas con
la hepatitis A.
«Ellos necesitaban algo, y
México les ofreció ese algo»,
dijo Trujillo al diario The
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, que
imprimió la entrevista en su
edición del jueves. «Para la
FDA es más fácil acusar a otro
país. Al igual que me sería
más fácil decir a mi que es
culpa de Guatemala y no de
México».
México cuenta con 26
productores de cebollines.
La FDA dice que la causa
del brote son cebollines
verdes procedentes de las
productoras Dos M Sales,
Agro Industrias Vigor, Tecno

ocasiones.
La breve ceremonia
incluyó la proyección de un
video en memoria de Vale, el
cual presentó imágenes de sus
inicios, sus éxitos a finales de
los años 70”s y su incansable
carrera hasta su muerte, el
pasado 7 de diciembre.
Sin poder contener las
lágrimas, su hija Angélica
Vale, así como los
comediantes Sergio Corona, Rafael Inclán y el propio
Jorge Ortiz de Pinedo sólo
tuvieron grandes recuerdos de
quien fuera padre, colega y
amigo.
La urna con las cenizas del
comediante permaneció en el
lugar del evento todo el
tiempo, y fue acariciada con
cariño por algunos de los
presentes. Con 30 años de
carrera artística y poseedor del
récord por más chistes
contados en la televisión
mexicana [más de 400 en dos
horas] Raúl Vale recibió un
minuto de aplausos de sus
colegas y familia presente,
entre ellos sus ex esposas
Angélica María y Arlette
Pacheco, Hanny, su última
pareja, sus hijos Angélica,
Carmen, Nicole y sus colegas,
Rubén Cerda, Jorge Falcón,
Memo Ríos, Arturo Peniche.
Las cenizas del actor y
comediante serán esparcidas
en el mar el 6 de enero.
Descanse en paz.

Los Tigres del Norte firmaron
un contrato exclusivo con
Arenas Entertainment, una
productora y distribuidora de
películas con sede en Los
Angeles.
En conjunto, Arenas y Los
Tigres desarrollarán y
producirán un largometraje,
en el cual el grupo tendrá un
papel estelar o, por lo menos,
una participación importante.
Además, trabajarán juntos
en el desarrollo de películas
basadas tanto en su historia
como en temas de su enorme
producción discográfica. Entre los proyectos considerados
se destaca La Reina del Sur,
novela del español Arturo
Pérez-Reverte, y en la que la
música de Los Tigres tiene un
papel importante.

Los Chistes de la semana...Y
son de borrachos
Dos borrachos se dirigían
en automóvil a sus casas. De
improviso, uno le grita
desesperado al otro:
“¡Cuidado con el árbol!
¡Cuidado con el árbol!”
Chocan de frente contra un
árbol y, por suerte, salen ilesos.
Cuando logran recobrar el
conocimiento el mismo sujeto
reclama:
“¿No te dije que tuvieras
cuidado con el árbol?”
“Sí, ¡pero tú ibas
manejando!”
Un borracho llega a su casa
a media noche, y su mujer lo
recibe con cara de dictadora.
Con voz tartajosa y mirada
retadora el tipo increpa:
“¿Quién manda aquí?”
“¡Yo!”, grita la mujer hecha
un energúmeno.
“Bueno, entonces manda a
comprar 4 cervezas”.
cantinero. “A todos los que
están en las mesas, en el baño
y una para mí”.”A ti no, porque
te emborrachas y te pones muy
violento”, le responde enojado
el borrachín.
Un
borracho
está
golpeando un farol de la calle;
se acerca otro borracho:
“¿Qué haces ahí?”
“¿Yo? Llamando a mi
casa”.
“Pues insiste, insiste, que
todavía hay luz”.
Un
señor
acude
diariamente a un bar y siempre
pide tres coñacs. Un
día, intrigado, el camarero
le pregunta:
“¿Por qué siempre pide tres
coñacs?”
“Es que bebo por mí y por
mis dos amigos”.
Sin embargo, otro día, el
mismo cliente pide tan sólo
dos coñacs.
El camarero, extrañado, le
pregunta:
“¿Sólo dos? ¿Se le ha
muerto algún amigo?”
“No, es que he dejado de
beber”.

Tus celos

Orozco named regional soccer coach of year
John Orozco, a teacher and soccer coach at St. Francis de Sales high
school in Toledo, was named the NSCAA (National Soccer Coaches
Association of America) Regional Soccer Coach of the Year.
The region is made up of all male soccer teams in all divisions from
Ohio, Michigan, and Kentucky. In all, there are eight regions in the
United States.
According to Matthew Koop, a fellow coach, “This is the highest
honor any coach from our district has ever received. John has been
invited to receive his award in January 2004 at the NSCAA national
convention in North Carolina, where he is also eligible to be named
National Coach of the Year.”
Orosco coached St. Francis to 2nd place in the Ohio championship
this year. Orozco has more than 100 victories to his credit at St. Francis.
In the photo above, Orozco (left) appears with Manuel Zapata,
president of La Liga de Las Americas.

For Magaly VásquezSerrano the idea of serving

Transforming the vivid

LOS ANGELES (AP), Dec.
10: A piece of a 500-year-old
cloak said to be miraculously
imprinted with an image of the
Virgin Mary was enshrined
Tuesday at the Cathedral of
Our Lady of the Angels.
The ceremony marks the
end of a national tour for the
postage-stamp-sized relic of
the Virgin of Guadalupe, which
was cut from a saint’s cloak by
the Archdiocese of México and
given to the Archdiocese of
Los Angeles as a gift in 1941.
It has been held in archives.
The piece of fabric, placed
inside a golden reliquary with
a sunburst design, was borne
into the cathedral on a
palanquin of roses. Dancers in
traditional costume accompanied the ceremonies.
It is the only piece known to
from the cloak, which hangs in
the Basilica of Guadalupe in
Mexico City.
“What’s amazing is that it
has lasted all these centuries,”
said Carolina Guevara, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles archdiocese. “It gives the opportunity for those faithful who aren’t
able to go to México City to
venerate the Virgin here.”
Officials expect thousands of
people to pay homage to the relic
in the coming days, she said.
The Virgin of Guadalupe long
has been venerated by Mexicans
and in 1999 she was named the
patron saint of all the Americas.

children to see the cloth and to
give thanks for her son’s recovery from a brain tumor.
“It’s a very big thing for us,
that the Virgin appeared to a
lot for us Mexicans.”
According to tradition, the
cactus-cloth cloak belonged to
a poor Mexican Indian, Juan
Diego, who was visited by Mary
in 1531 on a hill outside México
City. To convince a skeptical
bishop, Mary told him to gather
up roses in his cloak from a hill
where they never had grown in
midwinter. When he opened
spilled out the flowers, the image of Mary was revealed inside his cloak.
Last year, Pope John Paul II
canonized Juan Diego, making
himtheChurch’sfirstIndiansaint.
The relic was enshrined following a Mass in honor of the
feast day of St. Juan Diego. It
will be permanently displayed
on a 17th-century statue of the
Virgin of Guadalupe.

Dominó: Un juego con cultura propia
By Wendy Cuellar
La Prensa Staff Writer
¿Quién diría que el juego
con el que muchos crecimos
llegaría a tener su cultura
propia? El dominó se ha
convertido en más que un
juego.
Es un medio de arte y una
ayuda en el aprendizaje de la
matemática. No solamente se
juega en los balcones de
nuestras casas. Ahora lo
puedes jugar en mesas de
casinos y hasta en el internet.
Se encuentra en todos los
colores y con todos los
diseños.
¡ Y hasta tiene dedicado
un día en el calendario! Con
su gran trayectoria a través
de los años y mil usos, no es
difícil creer que los dominós
tengan su fanaticada
alrededor del mundo.
El origen de el dominó es
incierto. De acuerdo a
Dominic C. Armanino, autor
de “The Popular Game of
Dominoes: Rules and Strategies” (El Juego Popular del
Dominó:
Reglas
y
Estrategias), el juego de
dominó más antiguo fue
encontrado en la tumba de
Tutankamón, faraón del
antiguo Egipto que reinó en
dinastía XVIII por el año1355
a. C. De acuerdo al artículo
«Dominoes» (Dominó) por
Ken Tidwell, fue en la China
donde aparecieron 32 fichas
del año 1120 d. C.
En esta segunda versión,
la idea del dominó viene a
base de las combinaciones
numéricas que se forman con
los dados, juego introducido
por la India. Durante los
siglos XVII y XVIII, el
dominó llegó a Europa,
haciendo su aparición en
Italia, España, Francia e
Inglaterra. Ahora este juego
se encuentra en muchas
partes alrededor del mundo,
con gran popularidad en
América Latina. En Cuba y
Puerto Rico, el dominó se
considera
como
un
pasatiempo tradicional.
Las reglas del juego de
dominó son sencillas, aunque
varían dependiendo del país
o región. Por lo general se
juega con 28 fichas, todas
con una combinación
diferente del cero al seis,
incluyendo dobles, se juega
con cuatro personas, las
cuales forman equipos con
el que se encuentre enfrente,
formando dos equipos.
El jugador con el doble
seis comienza el juego y
todos los jugadores toman
su turno para colocar una
ficha en la mesa, combinando
el número de puntos en
cualquiera de los dos lados
de las fichas en mano y las de
las fichas no unidas en la
mesa, formando así un
rectángulo abierto sobre la
mesa.
Si no puede combinar
ninguna de las fichas en mano
con las que están en la mesa,
pierde su turno. El primer
jugador que coloque todas
sus fichas es el ganador y su
equipo recibe como puntos
el total de las ficha en mano
de los otros jugadores.
¡Pero el juego también
tiene su lenguaje! Decir
«paso» significa que el
jugador no tiene ninguna
ficha que combine con las
que están en la mesa. Colocar
la «chiva» es colocar la ficha
en blanco o doble cero. Ganar
con «capicú» o «capicúa» es
ganar con una ficha que
puede ser colocada en ambos
lados del rectángulo abierto,
jugada que dependiendo con
quien se juega puede
aumentar el puntaje del
equipo ganador.
«Trancar» el juego es
colocar la última ficha de un
número, terminando así el
juego pues no se puede
colocar otra ficha. En este
caso, el jugador con la menor
cantidad de puntos en mano
es el ganador.
Hoy en día el dominó ha
sido recomendado y usado
por expertos en educación,
como instrumento en el
aprendizaje de matemáticas
para los niños. También es
usado para crear obras de arte.
En particular esta la página
w
e
b
www.dominoartwork.com en
la cual se encuentran retratos
de famosos como Abraham
Lincoln o Marilyn Monroe u
obras de arte como la Mona
Lisa de Leonardo Da Vinci
hechas con exactamente 48
juegos de dominó de doble
nueve. Estos retratos son
hechos a base de un programa
de computadora creado por
el matemático Robert Bosch
del Oberlin College en Ohio.
El juego de dominó no
está tan lejos de nosotros. Se
han visto juegos en el Papá
Simón Bar & Grill en
Whitehall, Ohio, El Rincón
Latino Restaurant & Night
aprenda a jugar y empiece a
practicar por que el clásico
juego de dominó esta ganando
popularidad muy cerca de
nosotros.

8th annual TV brownout
By LYNN ELBER
AP Television Writer
LOS ANGELES (AP):
Television’s evening newscasts offer scant and stereotypical coverage of Latinos,
focusing mostly on crime and
immigration, according to a
study released Thursday.
For the eighth year, the
“National Brownout” study
by the National Association
of Hispanic Journalists found
inadequate attention paid to
America’s largest and fastestgrowing minority.
“This year’s report once
again highlights the dismal
progress the networks have
made in their coverage of the
nation’s Hispanic community,” association President
Juan González, a New York
Daily News columnist, said in
a statement.
The 120 Latino-related
stories made up less than 1
percent (0.75 percent) of the
approximately 16,000 that
aired on the major newscasts
in 2002, the study found. That
represents a small increase over
2001’s 0.62 percent.
Latinos make up more than
13.5 percent of the U.S. population.
Two-thirds of all evening
newscast stories concerning
Latinos were about crime, terrorism, and illegal immigration, according to the study of
ABC, NBC, CBS and CNN.
The kidnap-murder of 5year-old Samantha Runnion
in California and subsequent
arrest of Alejandro Avila, who
awaits trial, dominated the
crime category with 18 stories.
Also heavily covered with
21 stories was the case of José
Padilla, a former Chicago gang
member, who is accused of
plotting to detonate a radioactive bomb.
There were efforts to report
on Latino life more comprehensively with, for example,
politics and the growing Hispanic vote the topic of eight
network stories, the study found.
“We are pleased to see that
there is some progress being
made, but recognize that there
is still more work to be done,”
NBC News said in a statement.
ABC led the way with more
balanced coverage of Latinos
and with stories on a wide
range of topics, the study
found. One ABC correspondent, Judy Muller, was singled
out for her contributions.
“ABC News is very committed to diversity on the air,
behind the camera and in the
stories that we tell,” ABC News

spokesman Jeffrey Schneider
said Wednesday.
Overall, there was an increased use of Latinos as interview subjects and a slight increase in the length of Latinorelated stories (from 2 minutes, 25 seconds in 2001, to 2
minutes, 51 seconds in 2002).
But the results were largely
troubling, especially given the
critical role TV news plays in
shaping U.S. perceptions, the
report concluded.
The failure to reflect a
broader, more balanced view
of Latino life may stem in part
from the lack of Latinos in
newsrooms and in broadcast
management, the journalists’
association said.
Networks have consistently rejected a request to report on the racial and ethnic
makeup of their newsrooms,
although newspapers and local radio and TV broadcasters
conduct such studies, the association said.
Data for the NAHJ study
came from the Vanderbilt
University Television News
Archives. The research and
data analyses were conducted
by Serafin Mendez and Diane
Alverio, who also co-wrote the
report with Rod Carveth.
