Materials (
makes 1 bag and zipper pouch):
1yd of 44-45” wide fabric
1 - 7” zipper
1 pkg 1/2“ bias tape
embroidery floss (or some decorative string)

1. Print out pattern pieces (pages 14-22) at 100% (borderless letter size) and tape together
pattern pieces as indicated by markings.
LINING use only pieces 1L&R, 2L&R and 3L&R.
OUTER use all pieces 1L&R - through - 5L&R.
Suggested cutting layout instructions are also noted on the pattern pieces. This should fit
(snugly) into a single yard of 44-45” fabric.

2. Turn a narrow hem onto the bottom edge of both LINING pieces.

3. With right sides together, stitch LINING to OUTER using 1/4” seam allowance - do this to
both front and back pieces. Do not stitch sides.
Trim corners and snip around curves to ease fabric. Turn inside out and press.

4. Topstitch along the same seams - both front and back.

5. To connect the handles, overlap the ends of the front and back
by 1/2”, pin well and
topstitch a rectangle which will cover the original topstitching and catch the handle underneath.

6. Sew sides of bag with a French seam:
a. With wrong right sides together, stitch front and back using a scant 1/4” seam allowance.
b. Turn bag right side out and press. Pin the sides and then stitch 3/8” seam to catch the
seam allowance within.

7. While bag is still turned inside out take the bottom corners, flatten with side seam and
bottom seam aligned. Stitch across the corner 1 1/2” .
You’re done with the tote!

8. To make the zip pouch. Start with the zipper. If the ends of the zipper extend over 1/2”
past the end of the metal part, trim to 1/2“.
Cut 2 tabs of fabric 1” x 1 1/2”. Turn in 1/4” on the long ends. Wrap around zipper ends and
topstitch.

9. Unzip the zipper and pin (one side at a time) to the right side of the pouch side, centering
zipper with the center of fabric. Stich using a zipper foot.

10. Sew the welt to the bottom of the pouch from tab to tab.
11. Using the bias tape, cover the raw edges of the seams on both sides of the pouch interior. Start at one tab, wrap around, covering the seams and overlap 1/4” once you get back
around.

12. Turn pouch inside out. Braid embroidery floss (or similar) through zipper pull and add
beads making a big knot to secure them as a decorative pull.
To fold the tote: fold in half lenghwise, then in thirds, then roll up tightly from the bottom to
the top. It will be a perfect fit if rolled up tightly enough.
