SIS Adventurous Activities
SIS (SI=Service Industry, S=Sport,) is the accredited training package that is being run nationally for
Adventurous Activities. With the change in WHS (Works Health & Safety) legislation, NSW made a
decision to move from its previous internal training to an externally recognised accredited training, to
better cover the association and provide its members with recognised training and qualifications.
The benefit of the move to accredited Adventurous Activities Training is to gain nationally recognised
qualifications that are consistent across all States.
We currently offer Certificate II, III, & IV in Outdoor Recreation. Please refer to the NSW website or email
adventurous.activities@nsw.scouts.com.au .

SIS ADVENTUROUS ACTIVITY LEADERS TRAINING FLOW CHART – NSW
Certificate III – Outdoor Recreation
12 Core Units + 12 Elective units from Cert III
Activity Leader’s – Primary Appointment
Once an Activity Leader completes the e-Learning units, Common Core A & B1, the In-Service Training, Training of
trainers 1A, and holds a current First Aid Certificate (Apply First Aid) they will have completed their Basic Training,
and are eligible for a Certificate III in Outdoor Recreation. Some members may have exemptions which are dealt
with via a credit transfer process or RPL to recognise current skills. At some point you need to complete an InService to formularise yourself with other sections and how they operate.
Once the above process has been followed you need to complete an A13 Form to transfer from a Trainee Leader to
an Activity Leader Appointment (COAL). A Certificate III in outdoor recreation is not mandatory for an Activity
Leader, although they would complete the majority of this certificate in their training process.

FLEXIBILITY IN TRAINING
Mutual Recognition
Mutual recognition is the process by which training issued under the Australian Qualifications
Framework is recognised by other Registered Training Organisations.
To apply for Mutual Recognition, please complete and send an L7 (01/14) form with relevant certified
copies of certificates and statements of results to State Office. Please note that Scouts Australia, NSW
only records those qualifications relevant to Scout training.
Skills Recognition / Recognition of Prior Learning
WHAT IS SR/RPL?
Skills Recognition/Recognition of Prior Learning is designed to identify the skills, knowledge and experience that
you already possess as a result of:
 formal training, including any industry training
 work experience, including any informal training
 life experience and other experience relevant to the identified competencies.
The emphasis is on your current ability to perform the specific tasks required by the competencies in the
program, not on how, when or where you gained your skills.
SHOULD YOU APPY FOR SR/RPL?
The following points are things for you to consider when undertaking an application for SR/RPL.
 Are competencies current?
 How many years ago did you achieve that certificate?
 Have you performed the competency in the past?
 Have you learnt or been taught how to perform the competency?
 Have you practised the competency enough to be confident in performing it?
 Could you demonstrate the competency now, if necessary?
 Have you a certificate or some other document that shows you can perform the competency?
 Can you explain or describe how to perform the competency?
 Is there someone from a workplace who could verify that you can perform the competency?
If you can answer yes to most of these you may wish to apply for SR/RPL.
SR/RPL APPLICATION PROCESS
1. Submit your SR/RPL Application Form (L6 01/14), Evidence Portfolio and payment (Basic and Advanced
Training $80, SIS10 RPL $30) to State Office
Your Evidence Portfolio will consist of;
i. Evidence Checklist
ii. Accompanying evidence (COPIES ONLY) and Verification Statements
iii. Completed Assessment Tasks
2. Your RCATD will assign an Assessor to review your Evidence Portfolio. State Office will forward your
application to your Assessor
3. When your Assessor considers you have proven competency in all aspects of the module he/she will
endorse your application and return it to State Office for approval by the SCATD.
4. The State Office will contact you regarding the outcome of your application.
5. If at any stage you are unhappy with your SR/RPL process or outcomes, please write to the State
Commissioner Adult Training and Development care of NSW State Office.
PREPARING YOUR EVIDENCE
18
Adult Training and Development Calendar NSW – 2015
26 September 2014
Your application will only be successful if you can demonstrate to the SR/RPL assessors that you meet the
competency requirements of the unit.

 Other method nominated by the participant or the assessor.
Number each piece of evidence you provide and note this attachment number against the corresponding
requirement on the EVIDENCE CHECKLIST. Ensure that all evidence is VERIFIED.
VERIFYING YOUR EVIDENCE
To support your application your evidence needs to be verified. Evidence can be found be in many different
forms, some examples follow. It is recommended that you put together a document portfolio as a formal
presentation of evidence that can be viewed and discussed with an assessor.

of the course
 Original copies (or certified copies) of work you have carried out or documentation you may have
developed

demonstrated through your community/volunteer activities
