AIRPORT ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE SLOTS Due to an imbalance between the demand for air transport and the availability of adequate airport facilities/infrastructure and airspace systems to meet such demand at O R Tambo, Cape Town and King Shaka International Airports, a system of issuing arrival and departure slots is applied. This slot time will be the EOBT (estimated on/off block time) of the aircraft. Therefore, every arrival and departure at any of these airports will require a slot. With the cooperation of Airlines, Airports, ATC, Coordinators and Industry Experts, IATA has developed a comprehensive set of procedures which are intended to provide guidance on managing the allocation of scarce resources at congested airports on a fair, transparent and non-discriminatory basis. South African slot coordinations are following the IATA Worldwide Scheduling Guidelines for the Level 3 coordinated airports in South Africa, as should all operators who intend utilising the coordinated airports. Provision is made for local rules of which there are some being applied in South Africa. ATNS is the appointed and recognized IATA slot coordinator with input on airport constraints by ACSA. For a full explanation of the airport slot allocation procedure please refer to the SAAIP ENR 1.9. The IATA Standard Schedules Information Manual (SSIM), Chapter 6 provides detailed information the IATA formats used for slot applications, and a copy of the Worldwide Scheduling Guidelines is available from IATA at www.iata.org.
