Philanthropy and the culture of innovation
One of the hallmarks of University Health Network
is innovation. Researchers and clinicians are drawn
to UHN to push the boundaries of medical discovery
and patient care. Our culture of innovation is what
attracts the best and brightest talent from around
the world to drive discovery here; discoveries that,
in turn, have global impact.
It’s not surprising then that our hospitals attract
innovative donors. In Canada, philanthropy is a
primary means by which we fuel medical innovation.
Many of our donors are inspired to give by a personal
vision to help find cures and improve lives. Over the
years, our hospitals’ track record of innovation has
been made possible through donor support.

Krembil Discovery Tower nears completion thanks to donors
Construction on the new Krembil Discovery
Tower at Toronto Western Hospital is
proceeding at a furious pace as crews
prepare for the scheduled October move-in.
In the 2012 Toronto General & Western
Hospital Foundation Donor Report, we
celebrated the June 2012 “Topping Off”
ceremony, which signifies the completion
of major external construction. Since then,
construction teams have shifted their
focus to internal activities, such as lab and
office construction and installation of
mechanical systems.
Donors have played an integral part in
ensuring the project came to fruition.
Lead donors, Bob and Linda Krembil and
family kicked off the fundraising campaign
with a $30 million donation towards the
$60 million philanthropic goal. Donor
response to The Brain Campaign has been
phenomenal and we surpassed our goal
for the project by more than $2 million.
The total cost of the tower is $173.9 million,
supported by UHN’s own funding and both
federal and provincial governments.
One-and-a-half floors of the new tower will
be occupied by Altum Health, a division
4
of UHN providing innovative solutions for
health and disability management.
Toronto Western Hospital is a world leader
in providing care in neuroscience, vision
and arthritis. We maintain this position
through the exceptional research that takes
place in TWH’s Toronto Western Research
Institute (TWRI). TWRI investigators collaborate closely with clinicians at TWH in
the areas of the brain (neural and visual
sciences), bone (musculoskeletal diseases),
and community health programs.
TWRI urgently needed updated and
expanded wet research labs to help retain
and recruit new world-leading basic
science and clinician-scientist researchers.
Calling the research centre the final piece
of the puzzle in Toronto Western Hospital’s
renewal projects, Dr. Bob Bell, President
and CEO of UHN, explains: “The research
recruitment environment is very competitive in North America. In order to retain
the brightest and best researchers as well
as recruit others like new TWRI Director,
Dr. Don Weaver, a recent Tier One Canada
Research Chair, we must create a space that
matches their calibre of work.”
Over the past several months, the
Foundation has been pleased to have
the opportunity to host supporters of
the Tower for special tours of the facility,
to show construction progress and outfitting of the building, as well as to highlight
its numerous hi-tech and environmentally
friendly features that will complement the
stature of the researchers within it.
In addition to featuring state-of-the-art
technology and work spaces, the Krembil
Discovery Tower (KDT) uses the latest
environmentally friendly systems, such as
capturing rain water for washrooms and
groundskeeping, and is working towards
achieving LEED Silver accreditation.

Mitchell Goldhar invests in concussion research.
Martin and Joan Goldfarb
Solving the mysteries of concussions
Canadian business leader and philanthropist
Mitchell Goldhar has made a personal
gift of $1 million to The Brain Campaign.
His donation will specifically support the
Canadian Sports Concussion Project to
fund critical research into solving the
unknowns of repetitive concussions that
have affected so many players in Canadian
sports and have impacted countless families
playing sports and living life.
“Until recently, concussions were considered as minor medical events; whether a
person fell at home or work, was in a car
accident, or hurt playing sports. Times have
changed,” said Mitchell, who is also the owner
of SmartCentres which has developed over
250 shopping centres across Canada during
the past 18 years. The company has long
supported head-injury prevention projects,
installing billboards encouraging people to
wear helmets.
“Today we know that a concussion is a brain
injury. I am investing in this first-of-its-kind
concussion research project with the hope
that, in the future, parents will feel reassured
that when their kids are playing hockey or
other sports, they will be better protected
from concussions,” Mitchell explained.
The Canadian Sports Concussion Project
isworkingtoanswerquestionsabout
multiple concussions and the impact on
individuals long term that leads to a
brain condition called chronic traumatic
encephalopathy (CTE) that resembles
Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s diseases and
leads to premature death.
“Although concussions are in the news,
we have not used today’s technology or
modern medicine to help treat concussions
effectively. There are real shortcomings in
our knowledge about the acute and chronic
phases of single and repetitive concussions,”
said Dr. Charles Tator, Principal Investigator
of the Canadian Sports Concussion Project.
“It is thanks to individuals like Mitchell
Goldhar that we will find the answers.”
The Canadian Sports Concussion Project is
the world’s first program dedicated to a four
prong approach to concussions – research,
education, diagnosis and treatment. The
project is based at the Krembil Neuroscience
Centre and involves 13 investigators from
five institutions.
Martin Goldfarb
donation helps drive
stroke research
In December 2012, Martin and Joan Goldfarb
confirmed a $1 million gift in support of
the Halpern Chair in Stroke, named in
honour of UHN supporter, Todd Halpern.
The Halpern Chair will help advance
world-leading, ground-breaking research
into neurovascular diseases, especially
stroke, taking place at the Krembil Neuroscience Centre’s Centre of Neurovascular
Diseases. “This is a tremendous investment
in stroke research by the Goldfarb family,
and we’re thankful for their generosity,” said
Dr. Michael Tymianski, a world-renowned
stroke researcher. Dr. Tymianski and his
team are creating a better understanding
of various neurovascular conditions which
are leading to promising improvements in
stroke prevention and treatment. In
October, Dr. Tymianski published results of
a new drug he developed that protects the
brain against the damaging effects of a
stroke. The clinical trial demonstrated for
the first time that such a drug was capable
of reducing stroke damage in humans.

Two families support research that aims
to repair a broken spinal cord
A spinal cord injury changes a person’s life
in an instant and its impact will last a lifetime. After a spinal cord injury, nerve cells
die, destroying the connections between
the brain and the body. The major roadblock
to recovery after injury is the inability of
the adult human central nervous system to
generate new neurons and to make new
connections.
Donors Phillip and Peggy DeZwirek and
Honey and Barry Sherman have each
contributed $1 million to support the
ground-breaking research of Dr. Michael
Fehlings, which strives to rebuild a
patient’s broken spinal cord using stem
cells. In 2006, Dr. Fehlings achieved a worldfirst by using stem cells to repair spinal cord
damage in laboratory animal models.
The Phillip and Peggy DeZwirek Spinal Cord
Injury Research Study will translate 10 years
of Dr. Fehlings’ basic science research into
clinical care. Dr. Fehlings is leading an
international team investigating the best
neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory
6
strategies to prepare an injured spinal
cord to undergo stem cell treatment and
enhance stem cell remyelination – “myelin”
is the spinal cord’s protective coating and
conduit for signals.
The Shermans’ investment created the
Honey and Barry Sherman Spinal Cord
Injury Clinical Trials Unit, which will
provide a focused space for researchers
and participating patients, while serving
as the central hub for this international
research initiative.
Donor investment is vital to advancing
research projects like this because there
is very limited funding for these types of
clinical trials or research infrastructure.
Dr. Fehlings’ experiments, scheduled to
take place over the next five years, have
the potential to unearth a solution (a drug
intervention combined with stem cell
therapy) that reverses spinal cord injury,
and that could one day result in a treatment that helps the severely injured
walk again.
No Strain on the
Vein 2013: Winter
Wonderland Gala
No Strain on the Vein is a virtual community
of individuals, family and friends affected
by arteriovenous malformations (AVM),
aneurysms and cavernous malformation.
It was established by Melissa Gomes, an
AVM survivor and advocate, to raise funds
for the treatment of AVM and aneurisms at
Toronto Western Hospital, such as the
Gamma Knife.
On February 1, No Strain on the Vein hosted
the Winter Wonderland Gala at the
La Primavera Hospitality and Convention
Centre, Vaughn which raised over $13,500.
In two years, Melissa and a group of
dedicated volunteers have raised over
$21,440. Melissa was 20 when she was
first diagnosed with AVM, a tangle of
abnormal and poorly formed blood
vessels that have a higher rate of bleeding
than normal vessels. Melissa’s AVM was
in her brain, where it is of special concern.
Since 2009, she has undergone Gamma
Knife treatment at TWH, which has removed
95 per cent of her AVM.

Life-saving surgery inspires patient to campaign for tumour survivors
Nancy Hotson’s brain tumour ordeal was
a life-changing experience. Following her
successful 11-hour surgery by Dr. Fred
Gentili at Toronto Western Hospital (TWH),
she joined the Brain Campaign Cabinet.
This April, the Neuro Critical Care Unit
nursing station at TWH was named in
honour of Nancy and her parents, John
and Wendy Crean, for their gift in honour
of Dr. Gentili. Furthermore, Nancy and her
mother, along with Brain Campaign
Cabinet Member Karen Chaiton, are
working on a project to connect brain
tumour patients with information and
resources to help ease their diagnosis
and treatment.
The survival rate for skull base tumours has
improved dramatically over time. Surgeons
from around the world come to Toronto
Western Hospital to train with Dr. Gentili,
who is considered the “father of skull base
surgery” in Canada.
To perpetuate Dr. Gentili’s legacy, funds for a
Chair in Skull Base Surgery are being raised.
The Chair will promote the refinement of
surgicaltechniques,expandresearchand

to share best practices across Canada and
the world.
Cutting the ribbon for OR 6
A dream several years in the making was
realized on May 22, 2013, when the
Functional Neurosurgery Operating Suite
(OR 6) was officially opened at Toronto
Western Hospital.
Welcomed with an exciting tour of the
OR led by Dr. Andres Lozano, attendees
included several donors whose generosity
made the space possible. These included
Board Champion George Enns, who
spearheaded fundraising efforts for the OR
with the help of Merideth Saunderson.
Also attending was Bill Harshaw – the first
person in North America to receive Deep
Brain Stimulation (DBS), and the inspiration
behind fundraising efforts for the space.
Mr. Enns, Dr. Bob Bell and Kathy Sabo,
Senior Vice President and Executive Site
Lead of TWH, all addressed the tour’s guests,
thanking the OR donors for more than
$1.7 million in support that has created
an OR worthy of Dr. Lozano and his distinguished team.
With the launch of the suite, OR 6 will be
the setting for treating numerous neuro-
logical disorders, including all of UHN’s
DBS procedures. Through this leading-edge
treatment for conditions such as Parkinson’s,
electrical impulses are sent to target areas
deep within the brain, relieving symptoms
without harming the rest of the organ.
“We are so fortunate to have an exceptional
team of doctors, nurses allied health
professionals and service staff who provide
this care,” said Kathy Sabo. “By providing a
resource such as OR 6, our staff can push
the boundaries of neuroscience.”

Celebrating the Mohammad Al Zaibak Fellowship in Parkinson’s Disease
Last September saw a celebration of the
Mohammad Al Zaibak Fellowships in
Parkinson’s disease, a new and vital part
of the largest movement disorders centre
in North America – the Edmond J. Safra
Program in Parkinson’s disease at UHN.
Thanks to a generous gift from Mohammad
and Najla Al Zaibak, the 10-year fellowships promise to attract the best medical
graduates in the world to build on Parkinson’s
disease research. This will enable graduates
to dedicate their time towards specialized
investigation, and – working with Drs.
Anthony Lang and Andres Lozano on
improved clinical and surgical care – impact
patients world-wide.
In recognition of the Al Zaibaks’ gift, a fellowship print was unveiled, and a Gold Upper
Canada Medal was presented to them.
In addition, a new signage wall – unveiled
at the McLaughlin Pavilion – included (i) a

Edmond J. Safra Philanthropic Foundation builds on past support
Following in their tradition of tireless
support in the areas of Parkinson’s disease
and other movement disorders at UHN,
the Edmond J. Safra Philanthropic
Foundation has generously donated a
further US$3 million towards the Edmond J.
Safra Program in Parkinson’s disease at
Toronto Western Hospital, bringing its total
support to approximately US$7 million.
Focused on two initiatives, this gift will enable
the expansion of existing Parkinson’s disease
clinical areas at Toronto Western Hospital and,
along with a separate gift of US$1 million
from Mrs. Lily Safra, establish the new
Lily Safra Chair in Movement Disorders.
The ongoing investments of the Edmond
J. Safra Philanthropic Foundation in the
Edmond J. Safra Program in Parkinson’s
disease have fuelled research that is
unearthing the origins of Parkinson’s, and
will contribute to a cure for this debilitating
condition. Advances made with support
from the Edmond J. Safra Foundation are
changing the way we care for people and
their families in our clinics at UHN, and in
healthcare organizations around the world.
Through the Lily Safra Chair in Movement
Disorders, all funds will be used exclusively
for the purposes of investigation of improving care for Parkinson’s patients. Meanwhile,
by enabling the expansion of the Edmond
J. Safra Program in Parkinson’s, important
updates to the clinical environment will
move ahead.
“The establishment of the Lily Safra Chair
will provide ongoing support for research
projects, and the generous donation for
expansion of our physical plant will permit
renovations that are critical to house the
increasing activity of the Program,” says
Dr. Anthony Lang, Director, Edmond J.
Safra Program in Parkinson’s Disease and
Director of the Morton and Gloria Shulman
Movement Disorders Clinic.

Donald K. Johnson Eye Centre launches unique matching gift appeal
In November of 2012, TG&WHF launched a
triple match opportunity in the Donald K.
Johnson Eye Centre. The You Can Help Save
Someone’s Vision appeal is a special opportunity for donors to have triple the impact.
All donations are currently being matched
by corporate partner CBRE Ltd., as well
as by the Donald K. Johnson Eye Centre’s
own ophthalmologists, up to a maximum
of $2.5 million. The match is promoted via
posters, window clings, buttons, brochures
and magnifiers, which are prominently
displayed throughout all areas of the clinic,
as well as online at www.tripleyourgift.ca
“We have found that our donors are
immensely grateful for the opportunity to
have their gifts matched,” said Anita Nielsen,
Senior Director of Annual & Planned Giving.
“If they feel their gift has double or triple
the value, they recognize the impact will
be greater than what they could achieve
alone. They have a sense of partnership
and increased satisfaction.”
The Dunlap Family: a 100-year history with UHN
100 years. Three generations. A legacy of
giving to UHN.
The history of the Dunlap family with
UHN’s hospitals began in 1913, when
Jessie D. Dunlap took on the position of
first President of the Ladies Committee at
Toronto General Hospital. A year later,
Jessie’s husband, successful lawyer and
mining executive David A. Dunlap, began
serving on the hospital’s board – a volunteer
commitment that lasted 11 years.
Having already donated $40,000 to research
at the hospital, in 1925, TGH received an
incredible legacy gift of $250,000 from
David’s estate after his passing. The Dunlap
Building on University Avenue was named
in his honour. Jessie’s Will later provided for
abequestof$35,000toTorontoWestern
Hospital, and $45,000 towards work being
carried out at the Dunlap Building.
UHN’s Dunlap Radiological Sciences Department has since been named in David’s
honour, acknowledging his vision of the
future in the field of radiology at TGH.
David’s daughter-in-law, Margaret Dunlap
Crang, continued her in-laws’ legacy of
giving. Over the course of her life, she
donated $328,000 to TG&WHF. In recognition of the family’s tremendous history of
generosity,abrassplaquewasinstalledin

Two generations after their grandmother
first began her philanthropic pursuits on
behalf of our hospitals, David M. Dunlap
is continuing the family’s interest and
generosity towards UHN. In 2012, David
and J. Moffat Dunlap accepted an Upper
Canada Medal on behalf of the family. It
was a time of celebration and reflection,
and provided our Foundation with an
opportunity to say ‘thank you’ for the
Dunlap family’s ongoing support and
incredible impact on patient care at UHN.

People born with this complex genetic
condition are essentially missing a small
piece of DNA from chromosome 22. This
‘microdeletion’ affects the expression of
many individual genes, each of which plays
a number of roles in human physiology. As
a result, virtually every organ in the body
can be affected, with particular impact
on cardiovascular, endocrine and neuropsychiatric functions. Experts estimate
that 15,000 to 30,000 Canadians have this
microdeletion; however, many individuals
go undiagnosed, or their symptoms are
erroneously attributed to other conditions.
The Dalglish Family Hearts and Minds
Clinic began accepting patients in February
2012, providing treatment, education and
counselling for patients and their families
in a single facility. For the first time, patients

can change over the years,” said Dr. Bassett.
“Patients, families and their clinicians
cope with one thing, such as congenital
heart disease in infancy then they may be
presented with others, such as developmental delays or learning difficulties as the
child learns to talk or goes to school. And
after that, there may be neuropsychiatric
issues, like anxiety, schizophrenia and

The late Alfredo DeGasperis (second from right) at the celebration of the family’s initial gift with his
brothers Angelo and Antonio (far left and far right) with former UHN President and CEO Tom Closson.
Remembering Alfredo DeGasperis
A prominent builder and construction
magnate, Alfredo DeGasperis’ vision
shaped much of Toronto’s suburbs, and his
history of giving across UHN has established
a legacy of philanthropy reflecting his
dedication to bettering the world around him.
Arriving in Canada from Italy at age 18,
Alfredo’s personal empire was built not just
with an eye on erecting houses, but on
developing communities that would thrive.
His group of companies, ConDrain, is now
managed by three generations of his family,
and – joining forces with other developers
– he helped construct subdivisions like
Springdale in Brampton, Vellore Village in
Vaughan and Erin Mills in Mississauga.
Contributing to the highest level of cardiovascular excellence, Alfredo’s generosity led to
the establishment of such innovations as
the Alfredo & Teresa DeGasperis Chair in
Heart Failure Surgery, part of $8 million
donated by the DeGasperis family. In
honour of this and other giving, the
four-storey patient court gracing TGH’s
Clinical Services Building was named the
DeGasperis Conservatory.
Since Alfredo passed away in March, more
than 150 donations totaling over $83,000
have been directed in his honour towards
the Cardiovascular Research Fund at
Toronto General Hospital.
“I first met Fred DeGasperis in 1984 when
I was trying to raise funds to start a heart
transplantation program,” says Dr. Tirone
David, Head of the Division of Cardiovascular Surgery at UHN. “Fred and his friends
made that possible in less than a month.
He and I became good friends, and I will
miss him forever.”

On September 9, 2012 the fourth annual
Mark Vandermeer Memorial Golf
Tournament was held at Black Creek Golf

At only 18, Mark passed away suddenly,
shortly after being diagnosed with
hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), a
genetic disease that thickens the walls of
the heart and is the leading cause of sudden

death in young athletes in their prime.
Mark was diagnosed while undergoing a
physical in preparation for college to
study firefighting. More than 130 golfers
participated, raising the four-year fundraising total to $66,000 in support of HCM
research at the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre.
In addition to playing in the tournament
and enjoying a dinner reception, golfers
participated in raffles, a silent auction and
various hole-in-one challenges on the
course. The tournament was established by
Mark’s mother, Tracy, with a portion of the
proceeds also benefiting a scholarship
established in Mark’s name at his highschool, Courtice Secondary School.

Golf charity event to benefit cardiac surgery
On June 24, 2013, Duff & Phelps, with the
support of over 40 corporate sponsors and
more than 100 individual golfers, raised
more than $150,000 for the Peter Munk

This condition has resulted in him undergoing two successful heart transplants.
Also lending their golf talents to the tournament were PMCC Medical Director Dr.
Barry Rubin and PMCC Campaign Cabinet
Chair Jeff Rubenstein who was instrumental in linking Duff & Phelps with the PMCC.
“This year, our charity golf event will benefit
the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre because
more than five million Canadians suffer from
various forms of heart disease today and
the demand for expert cardiac, vascular
and cardiovascular care will only increase,”
said Robert Harlang, Managing Director
at Duff & Phelps and event co-chair. “The
proceeds from the 2013 Duff & Phelps
Charity Golf Outing will be used to assist
in the recruitment of three cardiac surgeons

Black Family Foundation establishes unique Fellowship
In 2012, The Black Family Foundation
made a $1 million donation in support of
the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre, to establish
The Black Family Vascular Surgery-Interventional Radiology Research Fellowship.
This integrated Fellowship is the first of its
kind in Canada, combining training in both
Interventional Radiology (IR) and Vascular

“It is clear that a campaign that is focused
on finding new ways to treat osteoarthritis
and replace joint replacement procedures
is resonating with the donor community,”
said Campaign Co-Chair Tony Fell.
Last fiscal year proved to be a success for
the Arthritis Campaign, helped by events
such as a Tribute to Dr. G, (a roast and toast
to Campaign Cabinet Member Dr. Bernie
Gosevitz) and major philanthropic grants
from the Krembil Foundation for $507,000
and the W. Garfield Weston Foundation

Transplant Campaign
Hélène Campbell has partnered with TG&WHF to harness the power of crowdsourcing in support of UHN’s Transplant Program.
Social media fuels Give 2 Live Campaign
Hélène Campbell captured the imaginations
and attention of Canadians when she
publicly shared her story about undergoing
a double lung transplant in 2012.
Exactly one year later, Hélène and her
mother Manon, joined the Transplant
Campaign Cabinet to spearhead a special
fundraising project. In April 2013, Hélène
announced the launch of the Give2Live
Campaign, a social media effort that uses
crowdfunding to support the needs of
those waiting for transplants throughout
Canada.
“Many patients waiting for an organ transplant at Toronto General and other transplant
centresarerequiredtolivewithintwohours
of the hospital,” said Hélène. “More often
than not, this means uprooting from their
home and finding new housing along
withpayingformedicalequipment,food
and transportation while they wait for a
transplant.”
In launching the Campaign, Hélène’s goal
is to raise $300,000 to help 30 patients
and their families who are on the organ
transplant waiting list right now and are
20
living within the two-hour zone of TGH.
Funds raised through the Campaign will
help cover the cost of food, pay for
accommodations and transportation,
and buy non-medical supplies – things
that may not be fully covered by our
healthcare system. The average out-ofpocket cost for a patient on the transplant
waiting list is $10,000.
To date, over $150,000 has been pledged
toward this goal and 30 funds have been
created. The opportunity to purchase
bracelets is also an option and sales have
exceeded $25,000.
Hélène received her lung transplant at
Toronto General Hospital in April 2012. She
developed a significant public following
through her personal blog and by engaging
celebrities such as Justin Bieber and
Ellen DeGeneres through social media. In
February 2013, she appeared in person on
the Ellen DeGeneres Show. Give2Live has
attracted over 1,700 Facebook followers, with
an overall audience surpassing 400,000.

International Pub Night, hosted by
Transplant Campaign Cabinet Member
Kirsten Cooney, was inspired by the memory
of her father, Jürgen Mummenhoff, who
passed away in 2008 after receiving a liver
transplant in 1993.
“Although taken away from us much too
soon, we were so very grateful of the extra
15 years that we were given with my father,
through the gift of life that he received
when he underwent liver transplant
surgery. He was so deeply appreciative of
his second chance at life and truly made
the best of his gift,” said Kirsten.
The first International Pub Night was held
in 2009 to raise funds and also to raise
awareness about the importance of organ
donation. This year, the event was held at
St. Lawrence Hall on April 25, 2013 and
featured live music by Up All Night and
cuisine by Daniel et Daniel. Proceeds from
the live and silent auctions and 50-50 raffle
contributed to this year’s total proceeds of
$21,000.

Esteemed philanthropist Murray Menkes – a role model to
his family and the community.
A legacy of generosity: the Menkes grandchildren established a transplant education
scholarship fund in their grandfather’s name in 2009.
Remembering Murray Menkes
For more than half a century, Murray
Menkes and his family played a vital role
in weaving the fabric of communities
throughout Toronto and in the surrounding
GTA. Creating one of the most respected
development companies in the region,
patriarch Murray was renowned for spearheading North York’s urban core with the
marqueeEmpressWalkandTransamerica
Life Towers.
The family’s philanthropy has been driven
by the same values that have steered their
dedication to real estate development, and
their generosity has led to great progress
across UHN’s diabetes, transplant and
thoracic surgery divisions for many years.
Sadly, Murray Menkes passed away last
April, three days after celebrating his 87th
birthday.
An amazing role model to both his family
and the community, Murray Menkes always
demonstrated the value of hard work and
investing the time to do things the right
way. The role he continued to play in the
family business and to the city was a testament to his amazing character. Up until his
passing, he had remained chairman of the
board of Menkes Developments Ltd., the
company he founded in 1954.
Last year, the Menkes family’s generosity
established the Menkes Family Kidney
Transplant Fellowship. Held by U of T
medical student Dr. Sunita Singh, this is
the latest in a long line of significant investments made in the health of Toronto.
In tribute to their father, the Menkes family has
established the Menkes Family Innovation
Fund, proceeds of which will be directed
towards high priority needs across UHN.
“Murray Menkes and his family were
extraordinarily grateful for the care they
received at UHN,” says Dr. Edward Cole,
Physician-in-Chief, UHN. “Murray also had
a great interest in excellence, and a willingness to help support programs that would
move the bar higher.”
Donor generosity helps launch exciting new technology
With the help of program donors, the Peter
Munk Cardiac Centre Advanced Heart
Failure team – led by Drs. Heather Ross
and Vivek Rao – continues to lead the
nation in innovative new therapies for
end-stage heart disease.
Amongst its recent advances, the team
22
was the first in North America to utilize an
innovative pocket controller to regulate the
function of the HeartMate 2 Left Ventricular
Device (LVAD) pump, technology that is
currently funded by the Ministry of Health
for transplant-eligible patients. Regulating
artificial heart function, the controller is a
small computer device that provides
two-way communication between the heart
pump, patients and their care providers.
Now, groundbreaking “next-generation”
devices have been developed that are
suited for supporting heart failure patients
who do not meet the criteria for transplant.

Saving lives one machine at a time
When a nightclub fire in Brazil killed
hundreds in early 2013, many survivors
suffered critical damage to their lungs due
to smoke inhalation. Dr. Marcelo Cypel,
who came to Toronto from Brazil to train
as a thoracic surgeon and lung specialist,
knew Toronto General Hospital could help
save lives. An expert on Extra-Corporeal
Lung Support (ECLS) technology, which
performs essential lung function and keeps
patients alive while their lungs heal, Dr.
Cypel and a team from TGH flew to Brazil
to assess patients who could benefit from
ECLS. Artur was one such case and survived
thanks to ECLS.
ECLS also saved the lives of 30 patients
at TGH last year. As the only hospital in
Ontario with an ECLS Program, TGH treats
patients with acute lung failure – often
caused by pneumonia and influenza – as
well as before and after a life-saving lung
transplant.
Hearing about the need for more ECLS
machines at TGH, Peter Eby directed all
memorial gifts in honour of his late wife,
Jane Eby, to the ECLS Program. Thanks to
the great generosity of friends and family,
and a gift from Peter and his family, the
purchase of a new ECLS machine for
patients was made possible.
“This machine will help patients recover
faster from their illness, and will enable the
highestqualityofcareintheworld,”says
Dr. Shaf Keshavjee, UHN’s Surgeon-inChief and Director of the Lung Transplant
Program. “We are deeply grateful to Peter,
his family and friends for making this

Rob and Cheryl McEwen’s philanthropic
leadership at the McEwen Centre for
Regenerative Medicine continues to play a
vital role in the development of personalized medicine. In March 2013, the McEwens
invested $2.76 million to establish the
McEwen Centre’s Facility and Program in
Human Disease and Development. The
program will be housed in a new facility that
is currently under development at UHN.
Their gift leveraged $27.4 million from the
Canadian Foundation for Innovation to
support the overall redevelopment of
the facilities.
Heart arrhythmias, one of the leading
causes of disability and death worldwide,
occur when the heart does not beat in a
regular rhythmic fashion. The cells that
control these rhythmical impulses, and
thus, our heart rate, are called pacemaker
cells. Thanks to generous funding from
Joyce Mason to establish a Fellowship in
Regenerative Medicine, people suffering
from heart arrhythmias may one day have
apermanentsolutionthatdoesnotrequire
the implantation of an electronic pacemakerdevice–whichrequireson-going
surgeries to replace their batteries; a major
drawback.
The McEwen Centre Facility and Program
in Human Disease and Development will
serve as a global hub for producing patient
specific stem cell-derived cell types and
tissues, including heart, liver, blood,
pancreatic and cartilage for studying the
origins and progression of different human
diseases and developing new therapies
and drugs to treat them.
The power of this technology is exemplified
by a recent collaborative study between

and investigators at Columbia University
and Boston University. The team took stem
cells from a child suffering from Long QT

and often lethal heart arrhythmia. Heart
cells generated by Dr. Keller’s team from the
patient’s stem cells mirrored the arrhythmia
observed in the patient. Most importantly,
the generated heart cells responded to the
drugs being used to treat the patient, and
helped inform a new drug therapy for treatment of the patient’s condition.

Dr. Cristina Nostro named Harry Rosen Chair in Diabetes
Regenerative Medicine
On December 3, UHN scientists, physicians,
volunteers and friends of the Foundation
gathered at Rob and Cheryl McEwen’s
home to celebrate Dr. Cristina Nostro’s
appointment as the inaugural Harry Rosen
Chair in Diabetes Regenerative Medicine,
McEwen Centre for Regenerative Medicine.
Harry, and his wife, Evelyn, were also fêted
for their long-standing support of programs
that span the spectrum of care and
research at UHN. In 2010, the Foundation
held Hats off to Harry, which raised over
$1.8 million towards establishing the
Chair; these funds, combined with Harry
and Evelyn’s personal generosity and the
contributions of donors brought the
Foundation significantly closer to its
$4 million overall goal. Dr. Nostro’s research
is dedicated to understanding pancreatic
beta cells, which produce insulin from
human stem cells, with the goal to eliminate
the use of insulin injections for patients
with Type 1 Diabetes.
In addition to Dr. Nostro providing a fascinating overview of her work, attendees were
treated to presentations by Dr. Gordon
Keller and Dr. Gary Lewis demonstrating
how UHN is at the forefront of the global
effort to find a cure for diabetes.
Gentle Ben Charity Challenge
In November, participants in the 15th
annual Gentle Ben Charity Challenge
were treated to the ultimate sports fan
package in Jacksonville, Florida.
Once again, the per capita fundraising for
the event was exceptional, with the 22
entrants raising over $100,000 for cancer
research and to support programs across
Canada. Once again the Benjamin Pearl
Memorial Fellowship supporting cancer
research at the McEwen Centre for Regenerative Medicine was the UHN beneficiary.
To kick off the weekend, participants took
in a Jacksonville Jaguars vs. Indianapolis
Colts game. Golfers took on TPC Sawgrass,
testing their mettle against the worldrenowned 17th island hole; it is unconfirmed
how many golf balls the group “donated” of
the estimated 100,000 retrieved from
the surrounding water annually.
Accommodations were provided at the
Sawgrass Marriott Resort and Spa.
Brothers, Steven and Michael Pearl
established the event in honour of their
father, Benjamin. Since its inception, the
Charity Challenge has raised more than
$1.2 million.

devastating lung disease.
Launched last year, this year’s event was
held at Toronto’s Second City Comedy
Club on May 9. With all funds directed to
the McEwen Centre for Regenerative
Medicine’s Accelerating Discovery LAM
Disease Research Project, this year’s show
raised more than $350,000 for the cause.
LOL: Laugh out Lam is the brainchild of
Catherine Lawrence – who was diagnosed
with LAM in 2006 – Theresa Mersky, and
their friends and family.
Together the group makes up Green Eggs

raise awareness and funds for the disease.
As LAM is often overlooked and mistaken
for asthma, bronchitis or emphysema, it
is estimated there could be more than
250,000 women living undiagnosed.
Playing a sold out house of 300 strong,
featured performers at this year’s event
included famed stand-up comedian

Sun Life Financial makes largest corporate gift ever in support of
diabetes
Building on UHN’s legacy of discovery in
diabetes research, Sun Life Financial has
made the largest corporate gift in its history
to support diabetes programs at UHN.
The $5 million donation will support
transformational research focused on finding
a cure, prevention, education and care.
“We’re pleased to commit our support for
diabetes, the first time in our company’s
almost 150 year history that we have
focused on a single health-related cause to
this extent,” said Mary De Paoli, Executive
Vice-President, Public & Corporate Affairs
and Chief Marketing Officer, Sun Life
Financial. “It also fits with our business
focus on workplace health and wellness,
where we saw an exciting opportunity to
raise awareness to empower Canadians to
join us in efforts to prevent and manage
this disease.”
The gift has established the Sun Life
Financial Chair in Diabetes (held by
Dr. Gary Lewis) and the Sun Life Financial
Professorship in Wellness and Diabetes
Education (held by Dr. Lori MacCallum).
It will also help fund various programs
designed to promote healthy living and
patient education.
In recognition of this donation, the diabetes
clinics at Toronto General Hospital and
Toronto Western Hospital have been
renamed the Sun Life Financial Banting
and Best Diabetes Clinics.
“Diabetes is a 21st century epidemic,” said
Dr. Gary Lewis, Sun Life Financial Chair in
Diabetes. “Sun Life’s generous gift to the
clinic will allow us to continue in the footsteps of Banting and Best to work towards
a cure for diabetes and improve the lives of
those affected by this disease.”
At a recognition event to officially recognize
the gift, hockey legend Doug Gilmour lent
his voice in support of diabetes awareness.
The former captain of the Toronto Maple
Leafs lost his father to the disease and his
mother and brother are currently battling
diabetes.
“I’ve seen first-hand the impact diabetes
can have on an individual and their family,”
Doug Gilmour explained. “Losing my father
to this debilitating disease and having
both my mother and brother living with it
has been difficult. I hope by sharing my
personal story I can shine a light on diabetes
research and prevention and keep other
families from going through the same
struggles.”
It is projected that one in three Canadians
will be living with diabetes or pre-diabetes
in less than a decade. With so many people
impacted by this disease, the World Health
Organization has called diabetes the
epidemic of the 21st century with approximately 4.6 million deaths around the world
last year.

of HPB education and research, specialists
need to be provided with the resources
needed to make innovative discoveries and
programs, while widening their scope of
knowledge and expertise.
The remainder of the funds will be
directed to the highest priorities of UHN
as determined by UHN President and
CEO Dr. Robert Bell.
“We are very grateful to Joseph and Wolf

Actelion surpasses $1 million in giving
Since 2006, Actelion Pharmaceuticals
Canada Inc. has been a major supporter
of efforts in respirology at UHN. Thanks to
their generous grants, research, clinical,
and patient education priorities have been
enormously improved – impacting not only
respirology, but rheumatological, transplant
and cardiac sciences as well.
This year, a milestone was reached when
Actelion donated $180,000 to the Pulmonary
Hypertension Fund, surpassing an incredible
$1 million in giving to UHN.

On April 17, a celebration of Actelion’s
landmark giving, including the launch of
the Actelion Way Walk Test Track, was held
at TGH. Dr. John Granton and Dr. Charlie
Chan assisted Jacques Archambault,
President of Actelion Pharmaceuticals
Canada, in unveiling new signage.
“The naming of this six-minute walk is
extremely relevant,” explains Dr. Granton.
“The walk test is used as the milestone for
our patients, and indicates for many the
success of treatment for a condition where
there was previously little in the way of
options or hope. The investment of Actelion
is a similar milestone. It represents the
success of a group of people committed to
advancing the understanding and care of
patients with pulmonary hypertension.”
Following the sign’s unveiling, Actelion
was honoured for their support during
a presentation at the University Club.
John Warren, Chair of TG&WHF, presented
Actelion with a Gold Upper Canada Medal
in recognition of their contributions.

The James family thanks UHN
Fellowship built on
collaboration
Every year, thousands of patients walk
through the hospital doors at UHN. Every
year, our doctors make an impact.
The James family wanted us to know just
how much.
After an x-ray in 2003 revealed a spot on
one of Peter James’ lungs, he was referred
to Dr. Shaf Keshavjee, whoquicklyrecognized the severity of his condition: without
surgical treatment, Peter wouldn’t survive
the year.
Followingthesubsequentlobectomy,Peter
was able to fulfill several goals: he visited
family in England, enjoyed fishing trips in
British Columbia, compiled a massive
cookbook, and taught himself to paint.
“Dad knew he had been handed a rare
gift: an extension on his life,” says his son
Greg James.
When Peter’s health started to decline
years later, he was once again referred to
UHN expertise, this time in the form of
Dr. Douglas Lee.
Asubsequenthospitalstaylefthimwitha

drug regimen and a dietician’s expert
advice. During this time, TWH pharmacist
Mayce Al-Sukhni is also remembered as a
“beatific presence” in the family’s life.
“From my perspective,” says Greg, “UHN is
worlds apart from the health care being
delivered elsewhere.”
Peter’s experience at UHN had not ended,
however, and in 2012 he underwent
prostate surgery performed by Dr. Neil
Fleshner. Discharged that spring, Peter
was well enough to go fishing in BC one
last time. He passed away peacefully later
that year.
Indebted to the physicians at UHN, Peter’s
family have generously donated $10,000
towards the hospital.
“Thanks to UHN, Dad got nine years of
bonus time to learn new things,” says Greg.
“To grow as a person; to have the pleasure of
watching his three sons become parents and
for him to become the unforgettable GPP –
Grandpa Pete to his four grandchildren.”
With the establishment of the Ontario Lung
Association – GlaxoSmithKline Respiratory
Education and Training Leadership Fellowship at UHN, priceless training and
educational experience are now offered
to one fellow a year, over the course of
three years.
Due to collaboration between UHN and the
Joseph L Rotman School of Management
at the University of Toronto, fellows will
build on their expertise in leading clinical
and classroom settings. While the fellow
will perform clinical functions within the
Respirology Division at UHN, they will also
attend second year elective courses in
Rotman’s MBA Program.
Respirology specialist Deborah Casey has
recently been selected as the first prospect.
“This Fellowship is the first of its kind in the
world, and we hope it will become the
model for future training programs,” says
Dr. Kenneth Chapman, Director of the
Asthma and Airway Centre at UHN. It will
bring together the best of academic thinking,
innovative therapies and health care
administration to improve patient care.”

Buchan Family Foundation supports mood disorder research
A promising new treatment for severe
depression has received a major boost
from the Buchan Family Foundation.
The $675,000 grant from the Buchan Family
Foundation builds on the Buchan family’s
transformational support of the Arthritis
Program at Toronto Western Hospital.
“We understand how depression can
influence people’s lives and are pleased to
support Toronto Western Hospital’s effort
to achieve better outcomes for individuals
dealing with drug-resistant depression,”
said Tina Buchan.
The grant will support the research of
Dr. Jonathan Downar, a neuropsychiatrist
based at Toronto Western Hospital who
is leading UHN’s MRI-guided repetitive
transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS)
clinic for patients with major depression
and other psychiatric disorders.
Twenty per cent of Canadians will experience
a mental illness in their lifetime, including
depression, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. Although medications and
therapy are often effective, more than
one-third of patients do not respond to
these types of treatment.
Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation
is an emerging treatment for major depression
that uses powerful, focused magnetic field
pulses to achieve durable increases or
decreases in the activity of target regions
of the brain. Although this treatment was
approved by Health Canada in 2002, until
recently its effectiveness was considered
modest. With the exception of Saskatchewan
and Quebec, no provincial health plan
covers rTMS for depression. For these
reasons, use of rTMS has been limited in
Canada thus far. The support from the
Buchan Family Foundation will allow
Dr. Downar to increase clinical studies to
further prove its effectiveness to the
Ontario government.
The Tesari Charitable Foundation dedicated to global impact
The Tesari Charitable Foundation was
welcomed to UHN’s Tropical Medicine
Clinic to celebrate its leadership gift of
$400,000. Directed towards Dr. Kevin Kain’s
pioneering malaria research, this support
will advance Dr. Kain’s point-of-care tests

efforts, Dr. Michael Baker presented the
Foundation with a Bronze Upper Canada

A gift in honour of compassionate care
After a busy year serving on the Brain

for a wide range of UHN programs including
the Donald K. Johnson Eye Centre,
Constantina Dina Theodoropoulos and
her partner Sheldon Drebin have made a
significant gift in support of the Dr. Herbert

Education and Practice (CEEP).
This heartfelt gift was made in honour of
General Internal Medicine champions Dr.
Michael Baker and Dr. Herbert Ho Ping Kong,
and will fund a fellowship in Dina’s name.
“We are so grateful to UHN and its amazing
family of doctors and surgeons for the
extraordinary care they have provided our
family” says Dina. “UHN simply cannot be
matched.”
Dina and Shelly were also treated to the tradition of receiving an Upper Canada Medal
presented by TG&WHF Chair John Warren.
Dr. Lisa Richardson will be the inaugural
beneficiary of the Constantina Dina
Theodoropoulos Fellowship in Complex
Care and General Internal Medicine.
Fairchild Radiothon realizes best year ever
In one day, over 1,200 donors called, visited,
or donated online, contributing a record
$142,000.
For the past three years, Fairchild Radio
Toronto and TG&WHF have held its annual
Fairchild Radiothon in the atrium of TWH
to raise funds to benefit patients of Chinese
origin who are one of the three largest
ethnic patient groups treated at UHN.
For patients and families who do not speak
English, the healthcare system can be overwhelming. Culturally competent healthcare
programs and services provide expert care
for a multicultural population and help
empower patients and their families.
“We are grateful to our donors, our
volunteers, UHN staff and, of course
Fairchild Radio for making this event our
best yet,” said Jodi Frers, Development
Officer, Annual Programs, TG&WHF.

I give @ UHN Campaign a great success
Last year, Toronto General & Western Hospital
Foundation launched a new annual
employee giving campaign, I give @ UHN,
and thanks to the dedication of UHN
employees, by all accounts it was a
tremendous success. The I give @ UHN
Campaign is a joint campaign in support of
UHN’s Cornerstone Campaign, which raises
funds for all UHN Foundations, and the
United Way, and represents the first time
that all UHN sites and the four foundations
have worked together to raise funds and
awareness. It was co-chaired by UHN
President and CEO Dr. Bob Bell and Joy
Richards, UHN Vice President Health
Professions and Chief Nurse Executive.
Eleven kick-off events were held across
UHN sites, and the campaign ran for three
weeks in October 2012. To promote the
initiative, marketing materials such as
posters and elevator wraps featuring UHN
employees were prominently displayed
across all UHN sites. More than 1,500 staff
participated in the campaign, representing a doubling of staff giving (from 9 to 19
per cent) over the previous year. Overall,
$374,000 was raised for research, medical
education, and improvement of patient
care at UHN and the United Way.
There were many ways for UHN staff to
participate in this innovative fundraising
program, including payroll donations, onetime gifts from departments and individuals,
special events led by staff and, the most
well-known component, a monthly 50/50
Pay Day Draw. The 50/50 raffle, established
in 2010, is available exclusively to UHN staff
through payroll deduction and, depending
on how many individuals enter, monthly
prize money can be as high as $8,000.
Since its inception, over $150,000 has been
donated to UHN Hospital Foundations.
Staff from across UHN stepped up to support
their hospitals, including administrative
staff, allied health professionals, nurses,
physicians, surgeons and researchers.
TG&WHF employees also demonstrated
their dedication to UHN, with 100 per cent
staff participation in the campaign.
As one example of UHN staff fundraising,
nurses in 8B Fell, General Internal Medicine
believed that a blanket warmer would be
beneficial to the frail and elderly patients
on their unit. The team set a goal of $5,000,
which, at the time they felt was ambitious.
“The team was really excited to come
up with ways of how we could raise the
money, and our unit council led the whole
initiative” said Teri Arany, Nurse Manager.
“We decided to do several different activities.
We hosted a bake sale in the Atrium at the
Western, which was a tremendous success.
We entered a team into the Toronto
Challenge Run/Walk and collected pledges.
One of the nurses connected with Cobbs
Bakery in Kensington Market, and they
donated a portion of their sales to us; and,
we had our own collection box at our
reception desk.”
“It went better than we imagined, and we
want to especially thank the GIM physicians
for their tremendous support. In addition
to being able to purchase the blanket
warmer for patients, there was a real sense
of camaraderie amongst the team, and
pride in UHN as we strived towards our
fundraising goal. We’re all eager to do it
again this year.”
Thank you to all UHN staff who participated.
Based on the success of the inaugural
campaign, plans are well under way for the
next I give @ UHN Campaign, launching
October 21.

A celebration of Partners for Discovery
Members of Partners for Discovery –
donors who have contributed $1 million or
more to our hospitals – were recognized at
the Annual Members Dinner on November
7, 2012 at the prestigious York Club.
Dr. Bob Bell, UHN President and CEO, gave
a special “state-of-the-union address” that
included UHN’s most exciting advancements
over the past year. A special highlight of the
evening was guest speaker Taylor Binns
who shared his story of how Donald K.
Johnson Eye Centre Ophthalmologist
Dr. Allan Slomovic along with UHN’s
Kidney Transplant Program and Dr. Ed Cole,
UHN Physician-in-Chief, collaborated to
The Conn Smythe Foundation
perform a complex limbal stem cell
transplant for the first time in Ontario. The
transplant restored the 23-year-old university
student’s sight.
“I just want to say thank you. This could
not have happened without your support,”
said Taylor to the guests, referring to how
philanthropy enables complex and experimental procedures to benefit patients.
In addition, Anthony Fell and Dr. Michael
Baker – Co-Chairs of Partners for Discovery
– presented new members with Partners
for Discovery prints, a memento by
which Partners are recognized for their
extraordinary support.

Annual Luncheon pays tribute to a special
group of donors
On May 28, 2013, the Foundation had the
privilege of saying “thank you“ in person
to over 160 donors at the 2013 Annual
Members’ Luncheon.
Celebrating the members of the R. Fraser
Elliott Society, and the Legacy for Life
Society, this annual luncheon is organized
to thank members from these two donor
societies. It also provides an opportunity
to learn more about how donor support is
making a difference to patients and staff.
A highlight of the luncheon was the
induction of new members into the Legacy
for Life Society. Ten new members were
presented with a special commemorative
pin modeled after the portico in the
DeGasperis Conservatory. As an enduring
symbol of the hospital’s proud history, and
of the many legacy gifts which made its
construction possible, the image of the
portico has been adopted as the emblem
for the Legacy for Life Society.
During the luncheon, special recognition
was paid to John Zinn, who is stepping
down as Co-Chair of TG&WHF’s Planned
Giving Committee after eight years.
The luncheon also featured a key note
presentation by Dr. Barry Rubin, Chair
and Medical Program Director of the
Peter Munk Cardiac Centre. Dr. Rubin gave
examples of how funds made available
through philanthropy have supported the
development of innovative treatments in
cardiovascular therapy.
Donors belonging to The R. Fraser Elliott
Society and the Legacy for Life Society
support research initiatives and the highest
priorities of UHN.
The R. Fraser Elliott Society was launched
in 2006 with 50 members attending our
inaugural luncheon. The Society has now
grown to over 2,000 members, whose gifts
enhance research and patient care at our
hospitals immeasurably. The Society was
named in tribute to our inaugural Foundation
Chair, Fraser Elliott, who passed away in
2005, in recognition of his outstanding
contributions to our hospitals, as a volunteer
and philanthropist.
The Legacy for Life Society recognizes
those individuals who have informed us of
their intention to leave a future gift, such as
abequest.Sinceitslaunchin2005over390
donors have confirmed their intention to
leaveabequestorothertypeoflegacygift
to our hospitals and over $44 million has
been raised for hospital programs through
the Legacy Giving program.

Donors
2012 - 2013
We wish to thank all individuals, corporations and foundations whose
generosity has made it possible for us to continue our tradition of
excellence in patient care, research and education at Toronto General
Hospital and Toronto Western Hospital. We are pleased to list donors of
$25,000 or more, cumulatively, since the Foundation’s inception in 1986.
If you would like to update your recognition name, please contact
Stuart Heard at 416-340-3174 or stuart.heard@uhn.ca.
Thank you to all of our donors, who have given so generously.
The Upper Canada Medal, originally created by the Loyal and Patriotic Society of
Upper Canada, recognized the service of volunteer soldiers in the War of 1812.
Recognizing an even greater need, the Society decided in 1829 to reduce the
medals to gold bullion to pay for building the original Toronto General Hospital.
Today, we honour special donors by awarding these medals in recognition of
distinguished philanthropic support.

Toronto General & Western Hospital Foundation 2012 / 2013 Report to our Donors
FINANCIAL HIGHLIGHTS
Operating Summary
Endowment Funds
For the fiscal year ending March 31, 2013, Toronto General & Western
Hospital Foundation continued to experience growth and recorded
fundraising revenues of $75.9 M. This was an increase of 6% over the
prior year.
The Foundation’s Endowment Funds provide a consistent and
important base of funding for research and education for the
University Health Network. Endowment Funds total $183.6 M
and include 250 individual endowment funds supporting chairs,
professorships, fellowships, lectureships, awards and scholarships.
Direct Fundraising Costs of $5.4M represents 7.8% of Gross
Fundraising Revenues. General Fundraising and Administrative
Expenses are $5.8 M and represent 8.4% of Net Fundraising and Net
Special Events revenue. Cost per dollar raised is 16.2% and the
Foundation continues to maintain cost-efficient expenses in order
to be accountable and transparent to our donors and stakeholders,
including our primary grantee, University Health Network (UHN).
Grants totalling $53.2 M for charitable purposes supported the work
of the UHN. These grants had significant impact on research, patient
care and education at UHN. They include expenditures for research
and large capital projects such as the Krembil Discovery Tower that
support research infrastructure and capacity.
Investment Management and Philosophy
The investment goal for endowments is to preserve the purchasing
power of funds on a long-term basis, while funding income distribution
(“payout”) for fundholders. Therefore a balanced investment strategy
has been adopted which involves investment in publicly traded
bonds and stocks. The Investment Committee of the Foundation’s
Board of Directors is responsible for the development and review of
the Foundation’s investment policies as well as the selection of
professional investment managers and the monitoring of the
performance of these managers. Membership of the Committee
includes leaders in the Canadian investment community.
Investment Performance
Inapositiveyearfortheequitymarketsbalancedbycontinued
lacklustre bond returns, the investments in the Endowment portfolio
achieved a net return of 10.2%. With preservation of capital being
the primary objective for Expendable Funds, the Foundation
sagaciously invested in bonds resulting in a net return of 2.9%.
These Funds generated income of $19.4 M as the Foundation
prudently managed the risks in the Endowment and Expendable
Investment portfolios.
Whilefiscal2013wasayearwithsomerecoveryinequitymarkets,
bond yields continued to be muted. In this challenging environment,
the Foundation’s endowment did achieve a 10.2% return, after investment management fees, allowing for significant capital preservation of
Endowment Funds in the range of 5.7%. In addition, the strong endowment fundraising revenue of $7.9 M was a significant factor that caused
the balance to reach the highest amount in the Foundation’s history.
At the end of the fiscal year March 31, 2013, the total fund balances
were $341.8 M in 2013 compared to $311.4 M in 2012. The growth
arises from both strong Expendable Fund and Endowment Fund
revenues and investment income in the year.
With all investment there is an element of risk, and the Foundation
has always endeavoured to manage the endowment fund prudently.
The Foundation will continue to monitor and review investment and
payout policies in the context of the economic climate and the needs
of UHN.
Overall, strong financial results were achieved by the Foundation,
especially in fundraising, cost-effectiveness and in grants to support
the work of UHN.
