Small Business Taxes & Management Page 8 of 27 You can apply a prorated annual lease value for a period of continuous availability of less than 30 days by treating the auto as if it had been available for 30 days. Use a prorated annual lease value if it would result in a lower valuation than applying the daily lease value to the shorter period of availability. Inclusion Amounts for Autos First Leased in 2012 Notes- z There are two tables, one for autos (reproduced here) and one for trucks and vans (see below). The IRS tables go to $240,000. We've only included values up to $120,000 for autos; $80,000 for trucks and vans. Besides the amounts in the tables below and additional amount may be includable in income if the business use of the auto is or falls to 50% or less. See IRS Publication 946 for a worksheet and percentage table. You can view the complete tables in Rev. Proc. 2012-23. See below for an example. Your annual payments are $7,188. For 2010 the business can only deduct $7,117 ($7,188 less $71). (For 2011, you can only deduct $7,031, $7,188 less $157.) If the car is used less than 100% for business, you cannot deduct any lease payments related to the nonbusiness portion. But you also reduce the annual inclusion amount by the personal usage. For example, if the car above were used only 70% for business in 2010, you could only deduct $4,982 ($5,032 less $50; both amounts are multiplied by 0.7). Prorate amounts for vehicles first leased after January 1 of the year. Note. Most tax preparation software will make the adjustment when you enter the lease inclusion amount for the year. Your annual payments are $7,188. For 2009 the business can only deduct $7,105 ($7,188 less $83). (For 2009, you can only deduct $7,007, $7,188 less $181.) If the car is used less than 100% for business, you cannot deduct any lease payments related to the nonbusiness portion. But you also reduce the annual inclusion amount by the personal usage. For example, if the car above were used only 70% for business in 2009, you could only deduct $4,974 ($5,032 less $58; both amounts are multiplied by 0.7). Prorate amounts for vehicles first leased after January 1 of the year. Note. Most software programs will make the adjustment when you enter the lease inclusion amount for the year. Your annual payments are $7,188. For 2007 the business can only deduct $6,940 ($7,188 less $248). (For 2008, you can only deduct $6,645, $7,188 less $543.) If the car is used less than 100% for business, you cannot deduct any lease payments related to the nonbusiness portion. But you also reduce the annual inclusion amount by the personal usage. For example, if the car above were used only 70% http://www.smbiz.com/sbrl003.html 11/26/2012 Small Business Taxes & Management Page 20 of 27 for business in 2007, you could only deduct $4,858 ($5,032 less $174; both amounts are multiplied by 0.7). Prorate amounts for vehicles first leased after January 1 of the year. Your annual payments are $7,188. For 2006 the business can only deduct $6,955 ($7,188 less $233). (For 2007, you can only deduct $6,678, $7,188 less $510.) If the car is used less than 100% for business, you cannot deduct any lease payments related to the nonbusiness portion. But you also reduce the annual inclusion amount by the personal usage. For example, if the car above were used only 70% for business in 2006, you could only deduct $4,869 ($5,032 less $163; both amounts are multiplied by 0.7). Prorate amounts for vehicles first leased after January 1 of the year. Inclusion Amounts for Trucks and Vans First Leased in 2006 Notes- For 2006 there are two tables, one for autos (reproduced above) and one for trucks and vans (below) Please see the definition of trucks and vans in Note 1, above The IRS tables go to $250,000. We've only included values up to $80,000. The credit applies to vehicles purchased on or after January 1, 2006 and may be as much as $3,400 for the most fuel-efficient vehicles. Taxpayers seeking the credit may want to buy early since the full credit is only available for a limited time. Taxpayers may claim the full amount of the allowable credit up to the end of the first calendar quarter after the quarter in which the manufacturer records its sale of the 60,000th vehicle. For the second and third calendar quarters after the quarter in which the 60,000th vehicle is sold, taxpayers may claim 50 percent of the credit. For the fourth and fifth calendar quarters, taxpayers may claim 25 percent of the credit. No credit is allowed after the fifth quarter. In addition, certain vehicles will qualify for the alternative energy credit. These are vehicles that can only be operated on an alternative fuel such as compressed natural gas. z z z z z z z z z z z z z z z z z z z z z z z z 2008 Saturn Vue Green Line--$1,550 2008 GMC Yukon Hyrbid 2WD and 4WD--$2,200 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid 2WD and 4WD--$2,200 2008 Nissan Altima Hybrid--$2,350 2008 Toyota Prius Hybrid--$787.50-(1) 2008 Toyota Camry Hybrid--$650-(1) 2008 Toyota Highlander Hybrid 4WD--$650-(1) 2008 Lexus LS 600h L Hybrid--$450-(1) 2008 Lexus RX 400h 2WD and 4WD--$550-(1) 2008 Honda Civic GX (Compressed Natural Gas)--$4,000 2008 Honda Civic Hybrid CVT--$2,100-(1) 2008 Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid--$1,300 2008 Saturn Aura Hybrid--$1,300 2006 Honda FCX (Hydrogen)--$12,000 2005 Honda FCX (Hydrogen)--$12,000 2008 Mazda Tribute 2WD Hybrid--$3,000 2008 Mazda Tribute 4WD Hybrid--$2,200 2007 Saturn Aura Hybrid--$1,300 2008 Ford Escape 2WD Hybrid--$3,000 2008 Mercury Mariner 2WD Hybrid--$3,000 2008 Ford Escape 4WD Hybrid--$2,200 2008 Mercury Mariner 4WD Hybrid--$2,200 2007 Nissan Altima Hybrid--$2,350 2007 Honda Civic GX (Compressed Natural Gas)--$4,000 http://www.smbiz.com/sbrl003.html 11/26/2012
