Ocean Chamber News G r e a t e r O c e a n To w n s h i p C h a m b e r o f C o m m e r c e 6 MAY 2011 - Ocean Chamber News Presidential Pause The GOTCC events this year have been truly amazing, thanks to the Board of Directors who have joined or chaired committees with great enthusiasm. Last month, at our Annual Installation & Awards Luncheon, we installed four new members to our Board of Directors, they are: Laura Huderwitz of The Provident Bank, who chairs our Membership Committee and sits on the Expo and Golf Outing Committees, Michael Manna of Burke & Manna Real Estate who is a member of our Golf Outing Committee, Michelle Smith-Tibbetts of Rumson-Fair Haven Bank who sits on our Membership Committee and Brandi Swift of Servpro Restoration of Marlboro/Tinton Falls who is a member of our Expo, Membership and Golf Outing Committees. We welcome them and wish them a long and fruitful association with the Chamber. As we approach summer, our 23rd Annual Business & Retail Expo on May 25th is a sell out; and our Expo Committee and chair Kim Somerville have given 100% to be sure everything is in place for a successful event for exhibitors and attendees alike. We invite all members of the community, both business and residential, to stop by Expo from 5-8 pm at the Jumping Brook Country Club, where they can make new business contacts and find new providers of products and services that they are seeking. There is no charge for admission, there will be free restaurant sampling and amazing door prizes worth more than $6000! Bring a lot of business cards and a few friends or associates! Our next BIG event will be for the entire family to enjoy – our all new Shrimp Fest of Ocean Township! Shrimp Fest will be held at Joe Palaia Park on July 8th - 10th and will include craft and food vendors, all of whom will have to feature at least one shrimp dish, rides and inflatables, live music throughout the weekend, a Friday evening motorcycle rally and a Sunday afternoon classic car show. There will be crafts and some free activities for children. Save the date, tell all your friends and plan to attend Ocean Township’s newest tradition! September will also prove to be a great month for the Chamber as Nick Gradone and Kathy King co-chair our 16th Annual Golf Outing at the beautiful Jumping Brook Country Club on Monday, September 12th. It’s still early enough to sponsor this event, so if you have an interest in reaching both the golfing business community and everyone else who will see all of our pre-event promotions, please call the office at 732.660.1888 or visit our Website www.gotcc.org. Here you can also find up-todate information on all our events, read our “Publicize!” column to see what’s going on with our members, read archived newsletters and informational articles, look for businesses to fulfill your needs using our online Member Directory and more. Please join us at our events, and join the Chamber to help support the business community and help us “give back”. We look forward to seeing you soon! Nicholas A. No matter the state of the economy, the state of the world, your location, vocation, or religious beliefs, virtually everyone owns and wears (albeit sometimes too frequently) a favorite t-shirt. T-shirts, just like anything, can range from inexpensive to very expensive; but what most people don’t realize is that you don’t have to spend a lot of money to get a high quality t-shirt that gets your message across. In the world of t-shirts, there are, generally speaking, the “basics” (e.g., Hanes, Jerzees, Gildan, Fruit of the Loom) and the “premiums” (Hanes Beefy T, American Apparel, Next Level). The difference in cost between these 2 levels may only be a few dollars per shirt; and these few dollars could be the difference between a shirt that people love and want to wear all the time, or a shirt that finds its way to the bottom of a drawer, awaiting its inevitable trip to the Goodwill bin. What makes a t-shirt “expensive” is the amount of labor and creativity that goes into decorating it. What most people don’t realize, and what we try to let our customers know, is that a shirt doesn’t have to printed in full color, or even multiple colors, to have a positive im- pact. If you go to any retail outlet and check out the “Graphic Tees” section, most are printed in 1 or 2 colors on a nice soft shirt, maybe with a distressed fashionable design. With some innovative design work, and a good combination of color, any premium shirt can be printed with an eye-catching, single color and be just as, if not more effective, than a boring design printed in 5 or 6 colors on a basic t-shirt. And it could be the difference between your shirt (with your organization’s name on it) becoming someone’s favorite or winding up on the bottom, while simultaneously saving you money in setup and print costs. Arbus, Esq. did it again. The former GOTCC President and longtime Master of Ceremonies of our Annual Awards & Installation event kept the packed house in stitches while bestowing honors on a number of deserving individuals, and one deserving company. In fact, Lou Russo, host of 94.3 The Point’s “Lou & Liz Show” said if he cracked one more joke, it would be the “Lou & Marty Show!” Every seat was filled at the luncheon that was held at the lovely English Manor in Wanamassa. Following a delicious buffet, the award ceremony began. The honorees included: past Presidents and long-time active members Stephen P. Setrin of Morgan Stanley Smith Barney and Andrew M. Horn of the Creative Financial Group NJ, who were inducted into the GOTCC Hall of Fame and presented with NJ State Assembly & Senate Proclamations by the Honorable Mary Pat Angelini, Assemblywoman; Millennium Radio Group NJ, parent of 12 NJ radio stations, including 94.3 FM The Point, 105.7 The Hawk and NJ 101.5, received the Chamber Service Award for over 20 years of support to the Chamber and our members – Morning host Lou Russo accepted on behalf of Millennium; Former Ocean Township Deputy Mayor, among countless other titles and associations, J. Two more former GOTCC Presidents who are forever giving back to their community took center stage, when Dr. Stuart Chavis, who chaired our recent Wine & Chocolate Tasting benefit at the Township Library, presented a check to Christine Hanlon, Esq. for the Community Hope Fund of which she is President. Current Chamber President, Nick Blanda, who has chaired or co-chaired both the Chamber’s Youth/Scholarship Committee and the annual scholarship fundraiser since its inception over 23 years ago, presented six $1000 scholarships to high school seniors who have shown a great involvement in community service as well as a good academic record. The scholarships, chosen blindly, are open to any high school senior who lives in the Township of Ocean, regardless what high school they attend, and the children of Chamber members. This year, a record number of applications were received. The recipients, all of whom were in attendance with one parent, were Jordan Ardakanian, Eric Chavis, Rebecca Nappi, Katerina Parlamas, Scott Pembelton and Patrick Vroman. We congratulation them, and their parents, and hope they pursue a lifelong commitment to their community. It was gratifying for those present to watch high schools seniors, who have already shown an affinity for volunteerism, witness life-long volunteers receiving awards for their commitments. All in all, an enjoyable event. P U B LI C I Z E ! Recently, you may have noticed odd little black and white squares, like those above, all over the place: on flyers, websites, marketing materials, and even convention booths. I first saw them at an Android App review site right after I got my new Android smartphone. At first I wondered who got hold of their website code and inserted all the funny looking abstract art. Then, after some research, I found that these were called QR Codes. These little “matrix” barcodes were originally used for tracking inventory in vehicle manufacturing but are now being used in much broader applications. This type of barcode has the capability of containing a myriad of information. It can be as simple as a hyperlink URL to a website or video ad, personal contact information, a block of text, or any other sort of basic information (in case you are wondering, the three I put there are, in order left to right: a link to a website with a barcode reader app, a link to my company’s homepage, and my basic contact info). Reading these QR codes requires a program that can scan and decode them. The one that I use works very well, has a very simple interface, and is simply called “Barcode Scanner” by ZXing Team. If you download the app through the Android app store and scan the first code above, it will take you to their website which has a link to a page where you can create your own QR codes! It also allows you to scan any barcode, search for the item online, and receive competitive prices and store locations. It makes shopping for products that much easier. For those of you who use iPhones, you can grab an App called NeoReader or QR App that will do the same thing. There are marketing applications as well. My company recently attended a marketing and trade expo in central New Jersey. To help reduce the amount of handouts we needed to print off, we uploaded our marketing materials to our website and had one page with four QR codes for attendees to scan as they walked by. This allowed them to get the direct link to the marketing materials contained on our website where they could then view and save the handouts. We significantly reduced the costs of paper, printing, and waste (think “green”). In addition, updates to the material will be delivered when people go back there using the QR code. It also eliminates reprinting of our marketing materials whenever there is a change or update. For those of us who are using social media such as Facebook to expand our reach into the community, Likify (www. likify.net) creates a QR code that links your mobile device to a fully functioning “LIKE” button for your Facebook page. You can then place this QR code anywhere, including printed materials or business cards, for people to scan and then “LIKE” your Facebook page. This helps simplify the process of combining all your current marketing groups with your Facebook page, and it is all accomplished with one little QR code. There are limitless ways to use these codes to simplify advertising, make marketing more accessible to a younger crowd, and also make it easier to drive internet traffic to your website and Facebook pages.
